Raglan streets to turn yellow for Daffodil Day

Guests: Mark Laurent & Brenda Liddiard at our Sunday Service: 2nd Sept 10.30am

Daffodil Day has become one of New Zealand’s most recognisable campaigns and is the main funding source for the Cancer Society. The appeal runs for the month of August and involves thousands of volunteers and many events across the country, culminating with Daffodil Day on Friday 31 August. With one in three New Zealanders

affected by cancer, the cause is close to Angela’s heart. “My dad passed away from prostate cancer two years ago and I’ve had two friends die from breast

“It’s such an indiscriminate disease, anyone can get it and it doesn’t just affect the person who has it, but family and friends too,” says Angela. “It’s so important to help fundraise so people affected by cancer have support available.”Angela takes her fundraising

seriously;; you might see her out and about on Raglan’s streets dressed in theme including a bright yellow daffodil hat. “My kids think I’m a little embarrassing

point. It helps get people interested in what we are doing and why.”

As well as getting local businesses onboard selling fabric daffodils, Angela is getting the children at Raglan Area School, where she works as a relief teacher, passionate about the cause. The school has held Daffodil Day fundraisers for the past few years but this year is a bit different. Angela is running a competition where students can guess the number of yellow tic-tacs in a jar for a donation. The closest guest wins the lolly jar and Daffy, a large teddy bear. This year Raglan’s local farmers have

also joined the party and are donating fresh daffodils from their farms. A group of volunteers will be heading out to each farm to pick the daffodils, ready for bunching and sale. Angela will take pre-sale daffodil orders but bunches will be on sale during the street appeal on Friday 31 August. Those who want to support Daffodil

Day and the work of the Cancer Society should watch out for volunteer street collectors who will be out and about on Friday 31 August. To pre-purchase a bunch of fresh daffodils contact Angela Massey on 07825 7202 or 027 285 6968.Alternatively people can make an

instant $20 donation by phoning 0900 311 11 which will automatically be charged to your telephone account. It’s quick and easy to donate from

your cell phone, simply text ‘daffodil’ to 2447 to make an instant $3 donation. You can donate online at

Charter boat man pulls anchor on PC ‘niggles’

Last month the red desiree potatoes sold out.

Last week his 42-foot charter vessel Taranui was brought up the slipway at Raglan wharf, hoisted by crane on to a transporter and taken by road to Tairua for another life on the East coast.

a good day and hasn’t had “anything major” go wrong, but says it was time for a change and lots of little “niggly things” got to him recently.“It’s getting harder down the

wharf,” he reckons. There’s been no “proper” wharf there for more than two years now and many long-held boat maintenance practices are now frowned upon. “It’s so PC,” he says of the

changes. Aaron acknowledges the support

from local harbourmaster Steve Soanes, who’s helped where possible, but says there have been “just lots of little things hanging over me”. He cites waterblasting to get

barnacles and weed off the hull as one problem, and expects that Raglan boats will soon need to be taken to New Plymouth to be cleaned. And rather than simply dragging

mooring blocks to shore every year or two to replace chains, it’s become a matter of spending about $1000 to bring another boat around from Kawhia and lift them from the water.“There’s more and more costs,” he

complains.

Aaron sold what he calls his “mean machine”, the 55-foot Maverick, last year in favour of operating the smaller Taranui in a bid to reduce costs. But while he says things worked

out okay for a time, in the end he lost heart and decided to give up on managing the “pubs and clubs” group charters that have been his livelihood for the past 13 years.“Dealing with the bar was slowly

getting to me too,” he says of the safety issues involved in looking after groups of 12. “I’m over the responsibility side of it.” Aaron ran commercial trawlers

for 12 years with Hartstones before setting up his own business, Megabite Fishing Charters. Now he’s opting for an easier

lifestyle with no pressure back on his farm at Te Pahu where he’s been based for four years.Aaron’s a family man, with kids

aged nine and 10. “I’ve missed a lot of my weekends (with them),” he admits.

impossible with year-round charters which, although weather-dependent,

day from October to December, he says. People would book nine months

ahead for a weekend spot, and his only regret on selling up is for those who’ve had their trips cancelled. “I didn’t want to let anyone down,”

Aaron says. However that couldn’t be avoided as Taranui changed hands earlier than he wanted at the request of the buyer.

Hefty rates bills – but little early public fuss

Though the council has maintained average Raglan rises for the 2012/13 year will be in a 3.8 to 10 per cent bracket, community board chairman Rodger Gallagher emphasised last month that various rates were set to spiral up by much more than the 2.3 per cent general rate rise. And he tipped that could spell overall rates

hikes of up to 30 per cent for pockets of Raglan residents whose capital value (CVs) had shot up in the recent revaluation process. As its deadline loomed this week the Chronicle

had yet to hear of a rise of quite that magnitude – though one of 23 per cent was not too far off the mark – and about the only person publicly kicking up a fuss, though obviously lightheartedly, was Rodger himself. The potential for any residents’ revolt here over

rates appears to have been lessened by the council’s 11th-hour introduction of a rates remission policy giving relief to any homeowner facing a hike of at least $300 and at the same time of at least 10 per cent. It’s missing out on that relief by less than $3

which Rodger was complaining about, albeit none too seriously, on his website this week.“Automatic remission kicks in where there’s a

rise of $300;; ours was $2.90 under that, so we miss out even though our rates went up more than 10 per cent,” he wrote of their Cambrae Road property. His comments came after council watchdog

John Lawson revealed that the rates on his Cliff Street property had gone up a whopping $598 or 23 percent, and that he’d been allowed a rates remission of just $16.71.“A rates remission – you are lucky, John,”

the community board chairman wrote tongue-in-cheek in reply. But he added as a footnote:

“Don’t understand how you get only $16.71 rebate. Perhaps council staff can explain.”Other ratepayers contacted by the Chronicle

mostly faced lesser but still substantial rates hikes, commonly around the $200 mark. One typical case was a property whose CV

had fallen $25,000 to $435,000 but whose rates were up $206 – an example of how even though there’s been a one per cent average drop in Raglan residential values, there are few chances of anyone around town getting rates relief simply because the percentage drop across the Waikato district was much greater. Some other residents were still in the dark at the

weekend as they’d received nothing from council in

direct debit amounts to go on.One Greenslade Road homeowner said she’d

noticed her weekly direct debit for her harbourside property had climbed from $63.83 to $70.64, indicating a $350-odd rates rise despite a fall in capital value. However she also had a nearby cottage, the

CV of which had plunged but whose weekly direct debit had fallen by only $2.50 a week. She observed dryly that rates “did not fall in quite the same proportion”.A Moonlight Bay homeowner had also

heard nothing from council yet but noticed their fortnightly direct debit had risen $5 despite a steep drop in the property’s CV.Meanwhile there’s good news of sorts from

won’t be forking out even more to council, through the introduction of water metering, until the middle of next year. Water & facilities general manager Richard Bax says water metering is not set to be introduced here until July 1 2013.Rodger Gallagher has estimated that with

successive increases in charges and the introduction of metering, Raglan residents will end up paying triple what they did in 2007 for the privilege of having water. A.T.

The Little Rockhoppers Music Classes at Raglan Old School Arts Centre, will expose youngsters to many forms of music. Children will explore the elements of music: pitch, beat, rhythm and tone, using

instruments, body percussion, and found sounds. Renee and Vicki are both knowledgeable teachers, skilled in providing musical experiences that are fun, engaging and challenging for young children. As mothers themselves, Renee and Vicki would love the parents to join in. Instruments will be on hand for every child but families are very welcome to bring their own. Rockhoppers is a fresh, new

OPINION:

WED is holding a meeting on Monday 3 September at 7.30pm in the Community House to decide whether to appeal against Waikato District dismissing submissions seeking to expand the area of the Raglan Community Board electorate and divide it to allow separate representation for town and country so as to prepare for the Board to take control of more local issues. Council agreed to expand the size of Raglan ward to include Waitetuna and Cogswell valleys, but refused to expand the Board area beyond their original proposal. Two different reasons have been given for rejecting those submissions.

Raglan councillor, Clint Baddeley, told the Raglan Community Board and wrote in Raglan Chronicle that, “Council has decided not to extend the Community Board boundary as far as the Ward boundary but following consultation has extended it to include parts of Ruapuke, Te Mata and Te Uku. The Raglan Community Board has traditionally been focused on the needs of the town.” The Board has been focused on the town, but the approved extension to

include more countryside doesn’t make sense on that basis.

Council’s alternative explanation about diluting the role of the councillor by saying it, “was closely aligned to this misunderstanding about the role of the community board”. It seems Council interpreted submissions asking for the Board to be given wider powers (as has been done in Thames-Coromandel and Southland) as a misunderstanding! Many of the problems heard at

Raglan Community Board meetings stem from Council having an incomplete understanding of what happens in an area remote from most of its staff and members. If the Community Board was able to deal with work delegated to Boards elsewhere, it is likely that there would be less waste, electors would feel better represented and Waikato District would no longer have the lowest voting turnout in the country.WED will also hold its AGM

after this meeting. WED was formed in 2007 and has no formal membership. Therefore all are welcome to attend the meeting.John Lawson - 825 7866.

On behalf of the Te-Uku fundraising committee we would like to extend a huge thanks to all the kids, teachers and parents for supporting our disco. It was fantastic to see kids from the surrounding schools attend and a lot dressed up in the Olympic theme. Massive thanks to Stephen Reid (DJ Jamin-I) for entertaining the kids with the music and shout-outs and to Tractor FM for the use of their speakers.. Also to the Raglan Bakery for the yummy kai!Rach Bidois and The Te Uku fundraising

Downtown Raglan may not have seen the

last after all of Mr Four Square’s “big

smiley face”, as he was described last week

by poet Hayley Hamilton in a lament to his

passing posted on Jet Collective’s window

directly opposite Raglan’s newly branded

SuperValue supermarket.

There looks to be some truth in rumours that another Four Square is to be built just around the corner in Bankart Street, where a large brick house was recently demolished.Ken Curtis, a co-owner of the now bare section,

told the Chronicle this week a commercial building

rumours the iconic Four Square brand was about to make a reappearance in Raglan. That despite the fact he’s a former owner-

operator of both the Waihi Beach and more recently Pirongia Four Square stores.

nothing’s guaranteed,” he cautioned.Mr Curtis, whose wife Lesley is also understood

to be a co-owner of the Bankart Street property, said speculation was premature and he had yet to apply to Foodstuffs, the Kiwi company which established the Four Square grocery stores back in 1924. A Four Square was in the pipeline, yes, but “it

could end up a hardware store”, he hedged.

With a land value of $430,000, and the old brick rental having been worth only $110,000, the site has long been regarded as ripe for commercial development. It adjoins a site on the corner of Bankart and

Bow Streets that’s currently owned by Century 21, and for which an architect’s perspective of possible commercial premises was publicised some years ago. Meantime Foodstuffs director and Mill Street

Pak’n’Save owner-operator Glenn Miller – another listed co-owner of the Bankart Street property –

not call back with a response as promised after being asked if rumours of another Four Square coming to town were true. However, in the brief conversation with the

did ask what the general reaction was around town to the rumours. The return of a Four Square here would cast

Raglan as the unlikely western frontier setting for a fresh grocery war between the country’s two supermarket heavyweights, Foodstuffs and Australian-owned Progressive Enterprises. The Curtises are believed to still live in Pirongia

but the Four Square there is understood to now have a new owner-operator.Edith Symes

CARING FOR THE ELDERLY CATWHY SHOULD WE TREAT OLD CATS DIFFERENTLY TO YOUNG CATS?As cats age all of their body systems are affected.Reduction in exercise may result in reduced muscle tone, which may further reduce the cat’s ability to jump, climb or exercise. There may also be a stiffening of joints because of chronic degenerative joint damage. When coupled with a reduced metabolic rate, lack of exercise can result in a fall in energy requirements of up to 40%. If a cat maintains a good appetite its daily food intake must therefore be reduced to prevent excessive weight gain.

DOES MY OLD CAT STILL NEED TO HAVE ANNUAL BOOSTER VACCINATIONS?Although a relatively small amount is known about the feline immune system, it is generally assumed that with age their immune function deteriorates. This may in turn

neoplastic (cancer) cells. Regular booster vaccinations are generally recommended and prompt treatment of disease is essential.

WHAT DISEASES DO OLD CATS SUFFER FROM?The major diseases seen in older cats are hormonal disorders (such as hyperthyroidism and diabetes mellitus) kidney disease, neoplasia (cancer), infections such as periodontal disease and arthritis. It is important to remember that while young cats usually only have one disorder at a time, this is often not the case for older cats, where diagnoses and treatment may be complicated by the concurrence of multiple interacting disease processes. While it is true to say that ‘old age itself is not a disease’, it is important that we pay particular attention to our older cats, so that if they do develop a disease we can recognize it, treat it early and so maintain their quality of life for as long as possible.WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE MY OLD CAT AS HAPPY AS POSSIBLE?Most cats age gracefully and require few changes to their general routine, however they do not respond well to change, if changes are to be made they must be introduced slowly. With the onset of colder weather make sure your cat has access to a warm, draught-free bed, situated where it can sleep safely without fear of disturbance. IIt is advisable to feed older cats on a highly palatable, reduced protein diet with constant access to fresh drinking water. Regular raw meaty bones are essential to maintain dental hygiene. As cats’ age some show a reduced ability to control urination and bowel motions. To reduce the risk of ‘accidents’ it may be necessary to allow access to an indoor litter box.If you have any concerns, please feel free to call in and talk to the friendy team at the clinic.
