Rain put a damper on last year’s

school gala but last Saturday the

weather was perfect and helped draw

large crowds to the annual fundraiser.

Final amounts aren’t yet known but

the circusthemed gala helped raise

at least $4000 for stage two of the

building project out in front of the

existing school buildings, which are

set back from SH23.

Children certainly gave the gala

day the “thumbs up”, says principal

Rachel Allan, thanks to a few more

fairground rides and attractions than

usual. And the white elephant stall

was a popular drawcard as always,

she adds.

The new multipurpose room –

complete with its own kitchen – was

Developing the school’s carpark

area adjacent to the new building

is the next stage of the project, says

Rachel, who hopes the work will be

completed sometime this year.

Meanwhile she’s delighted the

New Zealand Transport Agency is

coincide with the start and end of

the school day – will also impose a

This should give “a bit more

clout” in keeping passing motorists to

a safer speed, which has long been a

contentious issue, Rachel says.

A local nineyearold who’d taken a Coastguard elective at school recently got an unexpected taste of the real thing last weekend when she was rescued from near Te Toto Gorge by one of the course organisers. And there was plenty for her to talk

about back in class at Te Uku School on Monday morning. The girl was one of a party of four

lucky to escape with only minor cuts and scrapes from clambering around rocks to the gorge after they had to swim for it when their boat was swamped by two rogue waves about 20 metres from shore late on Friday.!"#$%&$'(#$)*+'$*#+,-#*+$+(#$+./$.&'#*$

a night in a bivouac the four hastily built as darkness set in was Raglan Volunteer Coastguard’s Kevin Dreaver, who’d helped take the school course.“She recognised me when I arrived …

they were quite happy and quite warm,

sheltered by a cliff from the southeast winds,” Kevin recalled this week.He took her and two others, one by

one, by Coastguard jetski out to the surf club’s waiting IRBs which in turn transferred them to the Harbour View rescue boat. The big Coastguard boat took the stranded trio back to Raglan wharf where they were checked over by /.0'0"1$2'$3%("$456-7.",#$%&),#*+8The stranded boaties had earlier waved

Coastguard, surf club and police rescue operation was underway and an hour later everyone was safe – none the worse for wear, say Raglan police, except for being very hungry 15 hours on from when their boat sank. The local father and daughter with

their mates from Ngaruawahia – Seth Taylor and his 10yearold son Corban

Radford – had only raw paua to eat during their ordeal.

They’d just put down a craypot in quite calm seas when their 14foot aluminium dinghy was hit by the two waves in quick +-,,#++0%"$ ."9$ +.";$ /0'(0"$ )<#$ '%$ =>$seconds.

“They were all wearing lifejackets and did everything right,” said police. “And the kids were in good spirits.”

Both dads worked to turn the neartragedy into an adventure for their children who were reportedly buzzing from the experience and couldn’t wait to get to school this week to tell their friends.

But any hope Mr Taylor had of salvaging his $6000 boat was dashed after he returned to Raglan early this week and saw it – in Raglan Coastguard president Wally Hawken’s words – “quite severely damaged on the rocks, a fait accompli really”.

Near tragedy becomes an adventure

Raglan youth are in for some sticky questioning at Kopua Domain this weekend – and those with all the right answers stand to go home with “loads of mean prizes”.

Sticky TV, a New Zealand children’s television programme screening since 2002, is bringing its purposebuilt retro “quiz caravan” to Raglan where it will park up just over the domain bridge from 10am to 5.30pm on Saturday and 10 to 5 on Sunday.Competitors must be aged between

10 and 16, and one at a time will try their luck at answering 10 questions. The quiz works a little like a

junior version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire: as you answer each question correctly you’ll win a better prize. At any stage you can choose not

to answer a question and take home the prize you have, or you can risk it and try for the next prize on the ladder.Prizes include gaming consoles,

cameras and scooters. The promotion is billed as a chance

to “meet Kanoa and the crew and show the nation what you’ve got!”Kanoa Lloyd is a current Sticky

TV presenter in a show which has spawned television personalities like Drew Neemia, Sam Wallace and Julia Wright.Sticky TV, created by Ponsonby

In their third year holding the event, Hilltop Wines owner Phil Abel said, “we’ve pulled out all the stops

this year. Bigger stage, more lighting and sound and we have a fantastic line up that will have the crowd fully enthralled all day.”

First up will be Ashley Knox and his band. Raglan local, Ashley’s trio blends jazzy soul, mellow funk and hint of warm electronica.

After a set by legend Paul Ubana Jones, Swamp Thing, comprised of Grant Haua and Michael Barker are next. Michael Barker was a long time member of The John Butler Trio and is the touring drummer with Kiwi legends Split Enz.

Next the constantly evolving Cornerstone Roots take time out from recording to road test new tunes, which are sure to get the crowd dancing.

The Billy Tk Jnr band, who have been described as New Zealand’s hottest bluesrockguitarists will be up after Cornerstone Roots. They will also be giving away a double pass to the 4day Fiji Jazz and Blues !"#$%&'()*+,%-.*/%0*1'2%32*'-4*#$',%-.*'$*567..("0#*Cove.

These rules are changing to make our roads safer. They come into e!ect on Sunday 25 March at 5am

Two give way rules are changing

If you’re turning right, give way Top of the ‘T’ goes before meWhen you’re turning right from the bottom of a T-intersection with no signs or signals, you will need to give way to all vehicles at the top of the ‘T’.This will also apply at driveways, including public driveways such as at a supermarket or hospital.

This rule will apply at intersections where two vehicles are facing no signs or signals, or the same signs or signals. You will need to give way to left turning vehicles coming from the opposite direction if you are turning right.

HOLIDAY BOOSTER COURSE

New Term begins April 23

Dolphinz Swim School

Please take a moment to consider how safe your child is in the

water. During 2011, 123 people drowned in New Zealand, the

worst drowning toll on record since 2003.

These statistics are taken from Water Safety New Zealand’s (WSNZ) website, www.watersafety.org.nz/. Of these 123 people the largest number of deaths occurred while swimming (17), scuba diving and snorkeling @ABC' 0&#' 9/"%$' ?09$#'79/*&=' 0&#' ?"0,*&=' @?",/' AAC' ,/$%$'<$%$' 069"' AD'deaths by drowning for children under the age of 5. Members of Raglan’s Kiaido Ryu Martial

Arts (KRMA) dojo who competed in a

mixed martial arts (MMA) tournament

held in Thames last week came up against

some tough opponents but showed

that higher ranks and weights were no

barrier against sheer courage and

determination.

On Saturday 17th March, Raglan Kiaido Ryu Karate students Shahn Ellis and Jake Child accompanied instructor and ‘Dai Sempai’ Dean Message ( 2nd dan black belt) to compete in an MMA, Jiu !"#$%&'()%*+,-'.#"*'&/*+&$#/*+,%0&$0/(("*'&tournament held at Kauaeranga Valley.

From the outset, Dean’s skills were put #)&#.1&#1$#&2"#.&."$&-($#&#.(11&)00)*1*#$&/33&in a higher weight category, outweighing him by anything from 12kg to 20kg.

He showed his years of experience and training however, dominating his opponents despite the weight difference by using controlled maneuvers – although he

did receive a black eye from a punch that glanced his cheek.

The Scent of Apples by

Jacquie McRae (Huia

Publishers, 2011) has been

selected by the Munich

based International

Youth Library as part

of their annual White

Ravens 2012 as one of the

outstanding international

books for children and

young adults released in

the last year.

The Scent of Apples will be presented at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair to be held from 19 22 March 2012.

The Scent of Apples is one of 250 titles chosen from 40 countries out of thousands of books received from all around the world.

‘I’m in awe really, my little book on such a big stage’ said Jacquie. ‘I hadn’t actually heard of The

White Ravens 2012 and I’m just googling it now’.

Just back from the Wellington Writers and Readers Festival, Jacquie said she was inspired by some of the wellknown writers at the Festival such as Australian writer Kate Grenville. ‘Hearing her speak about the long, hard process of writing made me relax and realise that I’m in good company.’

Dear Editor

I was pleased to see the page 3 story in last week’s Chronicle on the huge success of the Maui Dolphin Day. It is important for positive community stories such as this to be given recognition in the news media.

I was surprised though that you didn’t cover the story of the 15 Raglan passengers who were not allowed on the Raglan bus in Hamilton on the previous Wednesday. These 15 people, including school children, were told to wait two hours and handed a multicolour Waikato Regional C)%*9"3& D=ECF& 31/G1#& $/;"*'& #."$&8/;&./001*&(1'%3/(3;<& H.1& 31/G1#& 0%#& )%#& 6;& =EC& $/;$>&“Therefore we recommend that parents ensure their children have been able to board the bus in the morning before they continue their day . If the 3.40pm bus from Hamilton to Raglan is full, there is another bus at 5.40pm” It doesn’t say what parents are supposed to do about children stranded in Hamilton, or even how they’re supposed to know they’ll be late home.

The problem seems to be that WRC have a very strange contract with GoBus and that there isn’t any system to allocate money collected on the Raglan route to the Raglan service and therefore no money to provide extra buses. Even if they doubled the fares, WRC could still say, ‘we haven’t got any money’.

Along with my fellow Raglan Community

Board member, Bob MacLeod, I attended a meeting in Ngaruawahia on Tuesday to meet with District and Regional Council staff along with Councillors to discuss the problem. The meeting was frustrating. Even though the adult RaglanHamilton fare went up 11.3% and the child fare 48%, and passenger numbers have surged, WRC are saying they have no money to provide additional buses.

Part of the problem relates to the large number of passengers from the life style blocks around Whatawhata that are now catching the Raglan bus. Hamilton Taxis has mini buses available at a low per km rate that would allow WRC to provide a service from the Whatawhata area to the Hamilton Transport Centre within the current income and take pressure off the Raglan service.

All ideas such as this one that might solve the problem appear to be instantly rejected by the Waikato Regional Council. I have been told that bus passengers are currently compiling a petition. I understand the frustrations that are causing this. District Council staff are continuing to work on some options. The Raglan Community Board will continue working with the Regional and District Councils to come up with an answer.

Rodger Gallagher, Chairperson, Raglan

Community Board

Further opportunities for Waikato

boaties to learn about important

safety skills are being offered over the

next few weeks.

Recently, with support from Waikato Regional Council, Coastguard’s Raglan unit held another course, attended by more than 50 people, on how to safely cross the notorious Raglan bar.Now Coastguard is offering a one day

marine VHF radio operator’s course from 9am to 3pm on Saturday 24 March at Raglan for a $95 fee.

This will be followed by a weekend day skipper course at Raglan on Saturday 31 March and Sunday 1 April from 8.30am to 4.30pm each day. The cost is $195.Coastguard says new members can get

a $100 discount off the day skipper fee and $40 off the VHF operator fee.People wanting to register their interest

in the two latest courses can call 0508 737 283 or email [email protected] two latest courses will be held at the

St John’s building, 11 Wainui Rd.

After six weeks of competition we

!"#$%&"#'&($)*+,-,.This competition, proudly sponsored by

our local Top Cut Butchery, had some very interesting aspects about it...only two bowlers in a team and the ‘bowlers’ cannot play in the Skip positions. Well done to you all. We also had several young person’s teams, and they faced up to the challenges extremely well... It is rewarding to see people developing their skills of the games as they continue to play.

The results board has been closely watched weekly because it has been neck n neck most of the way through the whole competition. We ended up with two winners, BGW & Taxis, with equal points of 20, and three teams on 18 points (one game in it!). The Chocolate Fish went to Rusty Boys. Tasman Lands sponsored the ‘Sharpest Uniform’ which was won the Top Cut Kids, and the ‘Chief Stirrer’ went to Harold Crake. Congratulations to you all. Many thanks to Bob Carter for running this event.

The Thompson Progressive Pairs was run on Saturday17th March (with a few Leprachauns in tow !). Each game you have a new partner and played against new persons too, really mixing us up. There were two winners, the Skips and the Leads positions. Results were very closed with Bill Bond winning the Skips Cup while Margaret Mead won the Leads Cup.That was the last of our Aggregate
