e rivers and woods inNorth Central Iowa were originally hometo the Winnebago and Sioux Indianstribes but by the middle 1800’s the pushWest by Europeans was underway. In1853, John Long and John Bilford camefrom Illinois to claim timber and prairieland along the Winnebago River. JohnLong named the densely wooded areaMasonic Grove in honor of the Order ofFree Masons. That same year Long,Joseph Hewitt and George Brentner laidout a town on the same site renaming itShibboleth. En route from Illinois with hisfamily, Long's son, Mason, died. Whenhe returned to Shibboleth, the town wasrenamed Masonville, in honor of his son.In the fall of 1853, John L. MacMillian andJames Jenkinson built the first log cabinfor MacMillian's family within the limitsof what is now Mason City. When thefirst post office was erected, there weretwo towns in Iowa named Masonville, thus the present-day name of Mason Citycame into being. With an area of onlyone square mile, Mason City, Iowa be-came incorporated in 1870 with Darius B.Mason elected as the first mayor.
In 1866, the Mason City and Fort Dodgerailroad line was established. The railroadopened the door for Mason City to growquickly and became established as a sig-nificant retail and manufacturing centerin the Midwest. The first industry, TheBrick and Tile Company, got its start in
1886 using the natural resources abun-dant in the area. The lime, brick and tilebusiness developed rapidly with theopening of The Northwestern State Port-land Cement Plant in 1906 followed bythe Lehigh Portland Cement Company in1910. In 1911, the Colby Car manufacturingoperation opened in the community.Competition was stiff and the factorywas short lived but other industries wereflourishing and Mason City's populationwas steadily increasing. By 1912, MasonCity was shipping the largest freight ton-nage in the state of Iowa and producingmore brick and tile and more Portlandcement than any city in the world. At onetime there were nine brick and tile com-panies in Mason City. With the cement, brick and tile companies locating inMason City, many immigrants from thesouthern and eastern parts of Europecame to find work here. "Lehigh Row"was housing set up for the immigrantworkers on the grounds of the cement
company and"White City"was the North-western's rowhouses for theworkers.
At the turn ofthe century, in1907, an archi-tect came tothe area to
complete some design work fora prominent businessman inthe community. This architectwas Frank Lloyd Wright andMason City was fortunate tohave Wright and several of hisassociates, including WalterBurley Griffin and Barry Byrne, leave several examples of theirunique prairie school architec-tural style behind. These workshave become famous all over
the world and still can be viewed today.Frank Lloyd Wright's works in the com-munity include the only Prairie School de-signed home in Iowa, the Frank LloydWright Stockman House which was con-structed in 1908; The Park Inn Hotel, theonly remaining hotel in the world de-signed by Wright built in 1910; and the
City NationalBank build-ing, com-pleted at thesame time asthe hotel. Inaddition, thelargest groupof PrairieSchool styledesignedhomes on aunified site,Rock Crest &Rock Glenarea, was de-veloped.
By 1934 theGreat De-pression hitNorth Iowaalong withthe rest ofthe country.Throughoutthe Upper
Midwest, John Dillinger and his gangwere robbing from banks and making aname for themselves. Dillinger becamesomewhat of a hero to the depressionweary farmers of the Midwest, as hewould often destroy foreclosure records

during bank robberies. It was on March13, 1934 that "public enemy number one"came to Mason City and robbed the FirstNational Bank. When they were done,Dillinger and his gang left $52,000 richer.Little did the gang know that the bankjust happened to have more than$300,000 on hand that day. The First Na-tional Bank is now called the City Centerand remains a historic treasure in down-town Mason City.
In the 1950's and 1960's, the additionof the sugar beet industry and the porkpacking industry helped Mason Cityto become the largest urban centerbetween Des Moines andMinneapolis/St. Paul.
In 1951, Meredith Willson began workingon a fun-filled musical story of "RiverCity." Mason City is "The River City" ofMeredith Willson’s "The Music Man." Thestory was about a salesman trying to
convince the cit-izens of RiverCity to start aboys' band. Themusical playedseveral theatersin the East untilWarner Brothersbought themovie rights andbegan produc-tion in 1961. On June 19, 1962 at thePalace Theater in Mason City, Iowa,Meredith Willson's hometown, "TheMusic Man" premiered. The cast of themovie traveled to Mason City for the galaevent that was held in conjunction withthe North Iowa Band Festival. Meredith
Willson’s love of music lives on at TheMusic Man Square, where his personalmemorabilia and a replica of the originalmovie streetscape are on display. Annu-ally, Mason City hosts the North IowaBand Festival in tribute to the rich musicaland cultural history the city is known for.
