UNION ADDRESS

Hi everyone,Glad to see ye all back after the Christmas break. As always if you have any questions for me at anytime of the day or night please call into the offi ce, give me a call, a text or a simple e-mail and I’ll do my best to sort you out. Hope the exams went well for you and please make sure to balance the study and social aspect of Raise & Give week, it can be done. The ‘WITSU Raise & Give week’ is here and we have put together what we hope will be the most successful week ever. Over the years the WITSU aim was to put on some serious acts while at the same time raising some serious cash for charity. The four days and nights of Raise & Give week are packed full of events for everybody to enjoy. The Dome during the day will be serious craic so make sure you make it over between classes to sample the atmosphere or get some lunch from 11-3 or pizza during the evening. Monday night in the Dome will also be one of the biggest of the weeks so dress up, feel no shame and try win some prizes. Dome days are probably the most memorable times during Raise and Give week for more than one reason so if you and your friends have a few hours to burn, fi nd out what the hype is all about. Make sure you support Students’ Union events through the week as these are the only ones where 100% of the proceeds will go to charity. We also have two huge international DJ’s on show during the week, Tuesday night is DJ Sash in

the Foundry and Wednesday night is Judge Jules in Crystal. Thursday night will see Original Rudeboys on stage in front of a packed Masons. One of Irelands Top Comedians, Neil Delemere, will also be on show on Thursday night in the WIT Sports Hall. Four exceptional days and nights of Fancy Dress, Pong Championships, UV Paint, Illusionists, Safe Sex, Rag Fests, Valentines, Un-tagging Photos, Light Shows, Charities, Magi-cians, Rag Hoodies, and much more.

Have the craic, don’t take the piss and make it a week not to be missed.Brian ‘Stan’ StauntonEducation Offi cer0860499842

Hi All,I hope that your semester one exams went well and that you are enjoying your college experience at Waterford Institute of Technology. With the forthcoming semester it is going to be a hectic one full of activity. Sexual Health Week, WITSU Elections, Humanities, Health Science & Business balls, Fight Night round three and indeed the highlight of the academic year “Raise & Give (RAG) Week. The week’s ethos is about raising funds for charity while giving students of the institute a social aspect also. We have been very fortunate that WIT has been the leading third level college when it comes to RAG Week fundraising. In 2011 we raised an incredible €25,000 for charity and to all who were involved thank you ever so much. This is my fi fth year to be associated with the co-ordination of such a week and the hype around this year’s event is the best it’s ever been. While organizing such a week takes huge commitment from the Students’ Union team and the Rag

Crew, without everybody working together such an event would not be possible.I ask you all to support the Students’ Union events during the week, I feel we have a fantastic line up and the charity events which we are associated with will be the main events on each night. There will be other events happening around the city but NO PROCEEDS from these events will go the WITSU Rag Charities. There has always been a good will during this week by the both students and staff at this institute. The Fancy Dress Monday, DJ SASH Tuesday, International Superstar DJ Judge Jules Wednesday & The Original Rude boys, DJ Ray Shah & 2Fm’s Jenny Greene on Thursday are our main night time events. Please drink sensibly throughout the week, DO NOT engage in anti-social behaviour as those who offend will be dealt with immediately by the Disciplinary Committee at the institute. A large number of students have come before the committee in semester one and faced very serious consequences. Waterford Gardai are also taking a no tolerance approach along with the local resident associations so please RESPECT the community of Waterford during the weeks festivities!!

Enjoy, Be Safe & Please Donate to our four fantastic Charities.Best WishesConor DoylePresident086-7854420

Hiya! It must be that time of year again...!!!RAG Week 2012, for those of you who don’t know RAG stands for ‘Raise And Give’ and that’s the essence of the week, raising as much as possible for 4 extremely worthy charities! Our 4 charities for this year’s Raise And Give Week are; Paralympics Ireland, Eric Butler Appeal, Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland and South East Simon Community. Have a look at page 6 for a brief introduction to all these charities. We have been planning this week for months trying to cater to as many students as possible. We are aware of the current times, that we all face money problems and we wanted to deliver a fun week that wouldn’t break everyone’s pocket and still raise money for our charities. Please support these events, only events promoted and supported by WIT Students’ Union will be raising money for charity, please keep this in mind. Last year we raised over €25,000 for Make A Wish Foundation, Housing for Boaco, Waterford Wheelchair Association and Waterford St. Vincent De Paul. This is defi -nitely a credit to each and every person who donated money and got involved with the week. This didn’t go unnoticed as WIT is said to be one of the biggest fundraising colleges in

Ireland. I know it’s a cliché but ‘everylittle helps’ and your small change can have a huge impact! As your Welfare Offi cer, it is important for me to take the time out to highlight a few things... Eat well during the week and stay hydrated with plenty of water, drink sensibly and DO NOT DRINK & DRIVE, Take It Easy (why see a good night, or even weekwasted), Do NOT Walk Home Alone, DO look out for your friends and don’t be silly, wrap that willy! Loads of Condoms available from the Students Union Offi ces. Finally, I hope you have a great week enjoy all the events and activities and please don’t forget: Participate & Donate. Get involved as much as you can, take photos and enjoy yourself!Denisex

Hi Everyone,

I would fi rstly like to welcome you all back to Semester 2 and hope you all had a great Christmas. Our next big event is Raise & Give Week 2012 which aims to raise as much money for our four chosen charities. I urge you support our events and enjoy the week as much as possible. I hope you enjoy the posters and I will see you all around during the week’s events. Any issues please call into the students’ union offi ce. Monday night in The Dome will be great craic, any suggestions as to what I should dress up as are welcomed! :)

Will

Hey guys! Hope you’re all prepared for the week of madness ahead! Raise and Give week is always great fun but the best craic is getting involved in all our activities during the day as well as heading out (like the RAG Raid). The reason why we’re doing this is for charity after all!! Personally I can’t wait for the UV Party on with DJ Sash so if you see some lit up dope on the dance fl oor doing the Carlton dance you’ll know it’s me!RAG week is all about the fun but please remember to drink sensibly too; you don’t want to end up not remem-bering the best week in the whole year!!

See you on the dance fl oor,Nora x

Hi everyone, I’m Dee Grant, your Entertainments Offi cer. It’s that time of year again when Raise And Give Week is upon us. This is your opportunity to have some serious fun while raising money for charity. Everybody wins. I hope you will agree with me in saying that the line up is jam packed with talent and we have a wide variety of events to suit everyone’s tastes, covering more music genres and events catering to everybody. As Valentine’s Day falls on the Tuesday of Raise And Give week we’ll have a special theme

of love, for couples and singles. Let WITSU fi nd your match ;)As your Ent’s Offi cer, it goes without saying to enjoy yourself but remember that this is a full WEEK of activities and not just a day so drink sensibly and pace yourself- don’t burn out! Check out our tips on how to survive RAG week.I look forward to seeing you all throughout the week and remember to participate and donate!Let the banter begin!!

CharitiesThe South East Simon Community is a charity dedicated to people who are home-less and at risk of becoming homeless. We provide services in Kilkenny, Carlow Waterford, Wexford, and South Tipperary. They offer a non-judgemental service to all members of the public in the South East of Ireland. The community has been working in the South East region since 2003. The services they offer include:1. Supported Housing 2. Tenancy Support3. Supported Advocacy4. Re-settlement services5. Outreach to rough sleepers6. Food DistributionThe community only receives 10% government funding the rest of the money is dependent on our fundraising efforts. 80% of all monies raised, goes directly into continuing the delivery and the further development of their services. In the last 12 months there has been a 24% increase in the number of people access-ing their services, this is due to the signifi cant downturn in our economy. They work with and on behalf of some of the most vulnerable in society and this is why they are so delighted to have been picked as one of the benefi ciaries of RAG Week 2012. Through the students support during RAG week you are helping us to help others. South East Simon Community – Believing in People.

Eric Butler was born in 2001 with a rare illness known as Tof Vacterl Syndrome. As a sufferer of the condition, Eric’s oesophagus is connected to his lungs, meaning he can drown when he drinks or eats food as it can fl ood his lungs. Since birth he has had nu-merous major operations in Our Lady’s Hospital Crumlin. Most recently the family learned that these operations were unsuccessful and Eric was referred to Great Ormond Street London to receive treatment from the surgical team that successfully separated the Hassan twins in the hope that they may have the treatment he needs.

Over the years the family were able to meet needs that arose but as the needs grew more serious, so did the resources required to meet them. Various events/grants/gifts from local industry occurred on an ad hoc basis with local radio and press getting involved.

Just last year; a formal charity was established with an independent chairman and board. A fund was established to provide for those events and items required as needs be that arise as a consequence of Eric and his treatment. While the medical bills will be covered by the HSE his family have set up the Eric Butler Appeal to help fund the cost of the travel expenses needed to bring Eric to the hospital.

Charities The Cystic Fibrosis association of Ireland (CFAI) is the body responsible for the provision of a range of services, facilities and grants to the CF community in Ireland. They are totally dependent on the generosity of their voluntary fundraisers and donors for the income to do so as they do not have any state funding CFAI have recently setup a Waterford Hospital Fund to provide fundraised monies to refurbish two rooms at Waterford Regional Hospital to provide isolated ensuite facilities for Cystic Fibrosis patients. This is a valuable development and a major step forward in the campaign to prevent cross-infection of CF patients from hospital superbugs and other bacteria. At present there are no dedicated Cystic Fibrosis units in the South East, creating the need for patients to travel further afi eld for treatment. The setting up of this unit will greatly benefi t the local CF community. The overall cost is in the region of €250,000, and all fundraising initiatives are welcome and valuable for this project. CFAI is currently setting up a separate “Waterford Regional Hospital Fund”. In this instance, monies raised by WIT personnel would be dedicated towards creation of an outpatient/daycare centre facility at Waterford Regional Hospital for CF sufferers, both adult and paediatric, from the Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny areas.

Martin Cahill, Fundraising Manager of the CFAI said; “We are delighted to have been chosen as a ben-efi ciary of WIT Students Rag Week fundraising efforts, and assure you all you are making a difference to CF in the Waterford Region”

Paralympics Ireland is the National Paralympic Committee for Ireland and is responsible for preparing and managing the Irish team at the Paralympic Games. Held every four years in parallel with the Olympic Games, this is the premier multisport event for elite athletes with a disability. Irish athletes are currently building towards the once-in-a-lifetime “Home Games” of London 2012. Paralympics Ireland also aims to ensure that Paralympic sports are accessible and offer the ultimate dream to those who reach elite standards of performance; the opportunity to represent Ireland at the Paralympic Games. With support from the Irish Sports Council and Irish Institute of Sport, Paralympics Ireland develops annual performance plans with our member organizations. These cover all aspects of preparation for the Irish Paralympic team. They recruit and support top-class coaches to guide Irish athletes to competitive success. From their full-time Swimming and Athletics Managers, through to all of their valued part-time coaches, they aim to provide the best possible coaching programme to aspiring athletes. In addition to managing Irish team participation in European/World Championships in IPC governed sports, they prepare and send Irish athletes to Paralympic qualifying competitions around the world.

They coordinate a series of multisport training camps in the lead up to each Paralympic Games, with the aim of pulling individual athletes and support staff into a cohesive unit. Our Renault Ireland Team 2012 Training Camps at University of Limerick have already played a key part in developing a successful Irish Paralympic Team.WIT is an offi cial partner to Paralympics Ireland for the 2012 Paralympic Games and it would be very appropriate to further support their efforts during the recession, when providing top class support to Ireland’s athletes becomes ever more diffi cult as budgets are cut.

An Idiots Guide to surviving RAG Week.

1. The Dome really is the place to be: food, music and the craic!!

2. Keep enough money for a taxi fare home, if not use Rapid Cabs ‘Taxi Now Pay Later’ scheme.

3. Food. While Raise And Give Week may involve some drinking, having some solid food instead of a liquid lunch everyday will slow the rate of alcohol absorption and help you stay standing! Eating is not cheating!!!

4. Drink a pint of water before you go to bed and put another pint beside the bed for during the night.

5. The cure or hair of the dog is a myth made up by the drinks companies. It will not work. Simple as.

6. Don’t EVER leave your drink unattended, someone may spike it.

7. Look out for your friends. The friend you keep from getting into trouble tonight may well be the one holding your hair back as you get sick in the toilets tomorrow morning.

8. Don’t walk home alone, stay in groups and be aware of your surroundings.

9. There’s having the craic and then there’s taking the piss, if you don’t know what the difference is, the Guards certainly will.

10. Above all else, if you have had a ‘good few’ the night before, you will NOT be sober enough to drive the morning after. A shower, a cup of coffee, a full-Irish breakfast and clean clothes will make you look like a clean, wide awake, well-fed, presentable drunk but they will NOT sober you up. NEVER EVER DRINK AND DRIVE!

Waterford IT 2-13 University of Limerick 1-9

WIT will head into the Ashbourne Cup semi fi nals in high spirits after topping group A in this years competition after they had seven points to spare over University of Limerick last Wednesday afternoon in the Treaty County. Both sides are regarded as strong contenders this year and early points were exchanged between the sides with Emma Comerford and Cait Devane pointing frees. A bright crisp spring day made for some very exciting Camogie and the conditions were ideal for WIT as they hit the onion bag in side the opening twenty on two occasions with efforts from Marie Dargan and Emma Comerford raising green fl ags to give WIT a strong hold on the game.Pointed frees from Patricia Jackman and Emma Comerford, saw WIT push further in front as they headed for the dressing room at the break leading by 2-6 to 0-2.UL needed to up their efforts early in the second half and

did and good work from Niamh O’Dea, Niamh Richardson, Cait Devane and Julia White saw the Limerick College hit 1-2 without reply as Linda Bolger found the net. Denise Gaule and Patricia Jackman steadied the ship for WIT with pointed frees as UL threw everything at WIT. Emma Comerford kept the score board ticking over with some more frees before the end and although UL tried hard they found the WIT defence in mean form once again and all UL could muster was pointed frees before the end as WIT continue their quest for four titles in a row. WIT’s defence have only conceded one point from play in their two group games so far and if they can cut down the free count ahead of the Ashbourne week-end in WIT sports campus, they are well capable of success on their home patch.WIT: Kristina Kenneally, Ruth Jones, Sarah Anne Fitzgerald, Lorraine Keena, Patricia Jackman (0-4,frees), Collette Dor-mer, Aisling Carroll, Kate O’Donoghue, Katrina Parrock, Katie Power (0-2), Michelle Quilty, Shelly Farrell, Marie Dargan (1-0), Denise Gaule (0-1), Emma Comerford (1-6, 0-5 frees)

Cork IT 2-10WIT 1-11

It was a case of so near and yet so far for WIT in the opening round of this year’s Fitzgibbon Cup as Cork IT prevailed in a thriller in Bishops-town last Thursday night. After a terrifi c fi rst half showing by WIT which saw them lead by fi ve points at the interval it was a scoring blitz just after half time that put paid to WIT’s chances.

WIT had the edge on the Leesider’s in almost every area of the pitch in the opening half with the defence of Enda Barrett, Ciaran Haugh and Eoin Moore quashing all that came their way in the opening period, while some sharp shooting from Eoin Murphy raised a number of white fl ags for WIT. On the 18th minute WIT got a huge boost as Shane Walsh found space inside the fourteen and hammered the sliothar to the net .CIT could only manage three frees and a point from play in the opening half as the men in blue led 1-6 to 0-4 at the interval.

CIT sprung Colin Fennelly from the bench and his introduc-tion stemmed the tide and with some more tactical changes it was the home side who took up the challenge. Paudie O’Sullivan fi red home a goal within fi ve minutes of the restart as CIT found their scoring touch. It was a combination of Fennelly’s fi ne passing and Paudie O’Sullivans deadly fi nishing that saw CIT raise a second green fl ag and combined with fi ve points from Tommy Quaid and David Drake, the home side pushed in front 2-9 to 1-9 with end line in sight.

WIT battled heroically till the end but they were unable to breakdown their opponents and must win at home to UCD on the 14th of February to stay in the competition.

WIT Adrian Power, Stephen O’Keefe, Kieran Joyce, Eoin Moore, Shaun Murphy, Enda Barrett, Ciaran Haugh, Joe O’Dwyer, Bernard Burke, Eoin Murphy, Luke Harney, Eoin Madigan, Brian O’Meara, Shane Walsh, Michael Sheedy sub used Jake Dillon for Madigan.

NUIG stepped it up a gear in the second half but could only manage two goals, as a fi ne defensive display lead by Aoife Tormey saw WIT claim a fi ne win ahead of their intervarsity’s qualifi ers this week.WIT Sarah Healy, Nicola Kirwan, Sarah Ryan, Aoife Tormey, Mags Revins, Sinead Corcoran, Sheena Carroll, Maria Delahunty, Sophie Renshaw, Linda Kelly sub used Katie Duggan.

DRINK AWARE

11

‘I’ll never drink again.’ It’s a claim many of us have made the morning after a debauched night while struggling to face the daylight with a pounding head-ache, a parched tongue and a distinctly queasy feeling in the pit of the stomach. For many, this promise is short-lived and is particularly hard to maintain espe-cially during time like Raise and Give week. Rethink your drinking.

Once you have a hangover, there really isn’t anything you can do except wait for it to go away. Panadol may help the headache, but the rest just needs time. Of course, one answer would be to avoid the hango-ver altogether by not overdoing it... The ‘hair of the dog that bit you’-a drink in the morning-might make you feel better because you stop the metabolism of methanol and the formation of formaldehyde because you’ve got alcohol in your system again which will lead to potentially feeling worse.

Hangovers are caused by de-hydration so stay well

hydrated, drink a couple of pints of water during the night and be sure to eat well. Eating is not cheating, it’s being prepared.

Don’t see a good night wasted and drink responsibly and pace yourself!

For more information and facts on alcohol visit the drink aware website on http://www.drinkaware.ie

Raise and Give Week is supposed to be an opportunity to help some very worthy charities. Along the way we like to have a little bit of fun. A lot of fun actually but it is important to remember that life continues after RAG week is over and he neighbour you annoy this week will remember you next week even if you don’t remember why! So here are some handy tips for you all.

House parties! - Keep house parties in the house. Keep all the windows and doors closed, noise travels, especially at night. Your ‘guests’ are louder than you think. Respect your neighbours and people around you. Keep the music down to a reasonable volume and leave the house quietly when venturing down town.

Litter - Residents who their beloved estates look-ing like Hurricane WIT swept through it the previ-ous are unlikely to just roll their eyes and mutter “oh young people these days”. Rubbish goes into bins and not next doors lawn.

Singing - X factor is over... Singing should be done in the pubs and clubs and not on the way home!

Memories & Momentos - Some say its only a good night when you wake up hugging a traffic sign/cone. They are wrong! A public order conviction of any kind may prevent you from EVER getting a J1 visa to the states. So, No, it’s not a momento of Raise and Give week that’s a must have.

The WITSU Neighbourhood Watch will be out and about for the week and will be working alongside Waterford Gardaí and College Authorities.

DRINK AWARE
