LO To use boxing up to solve wordy problems

Janet has 40 CDs to sell at £3 each. She sellsof them at full price.She then sells half of what's left with 20% off.The rest she gives to charity. If they cost£200 to buy how much profit does she make?

Today’s Task

On each table there is a wordy problem.

You will have 5 minutes at each table to work together to solve the problem using boxing up. When the timer rings you must move in a clockwise direction to the next table.

At each table you should ‘Think, Pair and then Share with the people opposite.

You can ask for one of Hindle’s Handy Hints if necessary. However, when you ask for help you must use one of the ‘Boxing Up’ questions.

Rules

Attempt every problem. Even if you can’t get to a final answer, you should be able to write something in each box.

In 2006, adult tickets cost £3 each and student tickets cost £1.50 each. In 2007 prices were reduced by 10%.

Work out the profit or loss made by Newton School in 2006 and 2007.
