Powerlifting is a sport that challenges individuals’ strength and endurance. Rafael Escamilla was a national and world powerlifting champion in 1993, 1994 and 1995. During the National Powerlifting Championships in 1995, at 179 bodyweight he full squatted nearly 650 pounds, bench pressed 400 pounds, and deadlifted nearly 650 pounds. Powerlifting has three components: the squat, the bench press, and the deadlift. Competitors are placed in division based on their weight, age, experience, and whether or not they are wearing protective gear. This is a sport that requires years of weight training experience and training. Powerlifters regularly deal with large amounts of weight and need to be careful not to hurt themselves.

Powerlifting is a test of strength, endurance, and dedication. Rafael Escamilla, PhD, PT, CSCS, is a licensed physical therapist, a biomechanist, and a university professor. He is also a former national and world champion powerlifter. In 1993, 1994, and 1995, he won national and world powerlifting titles in drug free powerlifting competition. In 1995, during the National Powerlifting Championships, he weighed in at 179 pounds. He won the competition by full squatting just under 650 pounds, bench pressing 400 pounds exactly, and deadlifting just under 650 pounds. He trained hard to reach that level, and was able to go on to win the World Powerlifting Championships that year as well. Athletes who compete in powerlifting competitions need to be strong and well trained.
