The brief
Content development – Defining statement – Feature ideas – Naming development

Editorial – Page plan – Content planning
Next steps
RAF – Prestige brochure development
The brief
• The Prestige brochure will be sent to potential recruits when they
telephone the contact centre and express an interest in joining the RAF.
• The Prestige brochure will be designed to complement Career
Opportunities (768) by increasing potential recruits’ emotional
engagement and human experience of the brand. It is to be more
than a catalogue of jobs.
• The brochure will complement and extend existing online and printed
communications by developing an understanding and excitement
about life in the RAF and the RAF as an employer.
• It will encapsulate the ethos, history, lifestyle, practicalities and real
experiences of the RAF.
• It will be a dynamic, features-led publication that presents information
through human-interest stories. It will also include relevant job specific
information in the form of case studies, pay, benefits, training, fitness
and equipment.
RAF – Prestige brochure development
Although this publication is a brochure – not a magazine – it will use many of the devices and techniques magazines use to engage the reader at an emotional level.
We will be able to use our defining statement to evaluate any features ideas. It’s important to be able to hold any ideas against the statement to see whether they support the publication’s aims and objectives.
Together, the COI and the RAF have agreed the following defining statement:
The Prestige brochure is an exciting new publication that aims to engage potential recruits by presenting the lifestyle of the RAF. The brochure will present job-related information subtly, keeping the main focus on the diverse opportunities open to serving personnel. The reader will be left with a real sense of what it’s like to live and work in today’s Royal Air Force.

Feature ideas
The RAF and COI brainstormed feature ideas around the following themes:
• the kit and the technology;
• community networks;
• sports, adventure and hobbies;
• development opportunities, and;
• home and away.
During discussions, we identified the following strands that need to be included (in varying combinations) throughout the brochure:
• deployment;
• heritage;
• camaraderie;
• pay and benefits;
• gender;
• BME; and
• FAQs.

RAF – Prestige brochure development 1
Initially, COI came up with a series of suggestions that took into account the following keywords from our earlier brainstorm around the look and feel of the publication:
We identified the need to come up with a fairly short title, which will have impact and be easy to remember. It’s also important from a design perspective that the title is not too long a word.
The following titles were amongst those initially proposed.
Title development
RAF – Prestige brochure development 1
Title development (continued)
SoarPositive
• Aspiration
• Association with flying – the RAF’s unique selling point
• Dynamic
• Suggests (career) progression
• ‘Soar like a bird’
Negative
• Sounds like ‘sore’
• An acronym used by the US Army: Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne)
RAF – Prestige brochure development 14
Title development (continued)
RisePositive
• Aspiration
• Association with flying – the RAF’s unique selling point
• Comprises the RAF values: Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence
• Association with ‘Rise above the rest’
• Suggests promotion through the ranks/career progression
• Conveys sense of opportunity and expansion
• ‘Rise to the challenge’
• ‘Rise and shine’
Negative
• ‘Rise to the bait’
• ‘Get (or take) a rise out of…’
RAF – Prestige brochure development 1
Title development (continued)
EngagePositive
• An invitation to get involved or participate
• ‘Engage your mind’
• Suggests dialogue between the RAF and the recruit
• Relates to the military – engage the enemy, rules of engagement
• To employ or hire
• Relates to preparing a machine or engine for operation
Negative
• Possibly overused by other organisations (e.g. Jobcentre Plus’s stakeholder magazine)
• Not immediately obvious as RAF
• Toilets?!
RAF – Prestige brochure development 16
Title development (continued)
BasePositive
• Suggests a starting point or foundation
• Relates to centre of military operations (air base)
• The main place where a person lives or works
• Conveys a sense of home/community
• The main element or ingredient to which other things are added
• ‘Touch base’ – to make or renew contact
• ‘Get to first base’ – to achieve the first step towards your objective
Negative
• Base level – lowest common denominator, lacking moral principles
• Base humour
• ‘Get to first base’ tends to have sexual connotations
• Not immediately obvious as RAF
RAF – Prestige brochure development 17
Title development (continued)
Although some doubts were expressed about these suggestions, we believe that they need to be reviewed in light of our proposed cover concepts.
We have also researched additional titles and suggest that the following two options are considered.
RAF – Prestige brochure development 18
Title development (continued)
RTMPositive
• Has air of intrigue: ‘what does that stand for?’
• Ready to move – military lingo, suggests being in the know and part of the forces community
• In full, inspires action and implies dynamism
• Action also relates to next career move
• Avoids fixed meanings associated with nouns/verbs/adjectives
Negative
• Not immediately obvious as RAF
• Alternative meanings may be coined!
RAF – Prestige brochure development 1
Title development (continued)
60°Positive
• Relates to number of degrees in a circle and so implies thinking/looking around a particular topic (eg career options)
• An aerobatic manoeuvre
• Dynamic
• Memorable
• Has air of intrigue
• Avoids fixed meanings of nouns/verbs/adjectives
Negative
• Not immediately obvious as RAF
• 60 has come to be associated with the Xbox and with virtual-reality games. This isn’t necessarily a negative for the target audience!
RAF – Prestige brochure development 1
Headline typeface
As part of the design development, we have introduced a headline typeface to create a new identity for the Prestige brochure and to ensure differentiation and stand-out from other RAF publications.
Three typefaces have been chosen because they are distinctive, modern, dynamic, technical and easy to read. In addition, they complement Univers, the Royal Air Force typeface.

IFC–1 Introduction/Contents This spread will use short stories to provide a gentle introduction to the publication.
We have identified two possible approaches: (a) short ‘snapshots’ of features contained in the brochure;(b) short ‘news’ items (that won’t date too quickly) and are updated before each quarterly reprint. This will help keep the ‘magazine’ feel fresh and flexible, and will allow tie-in with other communications activities.
(a) alternative photos that support the articles and features (don’t repeat images and don’t illustrate everything)(b) photos that illustrate on-going news items, events, airshows, sponsorship, marketing activity, unusual stories e.g rowing across the Atlantic (In the Loop?).
COI and RAF to discuss approach
2–3 Around the world with the RAFA focus on the overseas experiences of three or four serving personnel.
Telephone interviews with three or four people who’ve experienced tours/posts, exchanges, work-related training and adventurous training overseas. The aim is to get a large geographical spread in order to show the breadth of opportunities on offer.
Photography sourced directly from profiles to add realism. General imagery of locations worldwide to add interest (eg deserts, jungles, snow and ice) made available by RAF.

16–20 Search and RescueFocussing on the experience of personnel working in an SAR squadron, this article will also look at the networks the RAF makes with the emergency services and other organisations.
An editor will need to spend three days with an SAR squadron, talking to the team about their work. We will also need to do follow-up interviews (possibly by telephone) with contacts in the RNLI, coastguard, police, or other relevant organisations.
Approximately three days with RAF SAR squadron. If possible get permission to photograph actual rescue. Involve RNLI, coastguard, poice, hospital etc.Plenty of library photos to choose from. Use mountain rescue images as well. Famous incidents eg Boscastle floodsSAR historical photos and technical illustrations.
