What is Radon

• Colorless, odorless, radioactive gas• Produced by the radioactive decay of

uranium, which is found in some bedrock• Radon escapes upward through the soil and

can become concentrated in homes• Radon causes lung cancer

Rn• Radon is an element. It is also a noble gas, so it is

found near xenon and neon on the periodic table.

• Radon is part of our natural environment, but can collect in homes built in radon-heavy areas.

Presentation Notes
Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas. It forms naturally from the radioactive decay of uranium - , which is found at various levels in bedrock. Radon gas escapes upward through the soil from the bedrock below into the air, ground water and surface water. Found in low levels in outdoor air, but where it is the greatest danger in the home. Since it forms naturally from the decay of uranium, it dissipates outside. If it is trapped in your house, then it can become a danger to your family. Radon enters through imperfections in the floors and walls where there is contact between the home and soil.

Ionization Radiation• Rn emits energy. This energy

is strong enough to damage molecules in your body. (Like DNA.) More energy = higher risk of damage to your DNA

• These small blasts of energy can be measured.

• Radon’s alpha particles will pit plastic (100x)

Public radioactive exposure risk

•Damage to your DNA can causes cells to replicate incorrectly. One type of incorrect cell replication is cancer.•Because Radon is a gas, it affects the lungs.•Radon is the greatest single source of radiation exposure for most people and is the #2 cause of lung cancer.•The EPA has consistently ranked Radon among the top four public environmental risks.

There is no safe amount of Rn

• Radon = damage to DNA = risk of cell replication errors = risk of cancer

• We have made an arbitrary determination that a level of radiation greater than 4 pC/l is too risky in a home.

Presentation Notes
A Curie is actually named after Pierre Curie, not Marie Curie. The discovered was made after Pierre’s death. A Curie is a measurement of decays per second (multiplied by a constant.)

Where is Rn found?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Alaska’s strongest natural Concentra - are in the Yukon-Tanana uplands and parts of the Matanuska and Susitna valleys. These areas are generally underlain by schist bedrock, from which radon gas is released, but you will find radon any - where there is decaying uranium with an escape route to the atmosphere The presence of radon is variable dependent on what cracks exist in the ground. So you can have a problem and your neighbor doesn’t have any.

Radon map: Lower 48

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Resolution on radon maps is better in lower 48.

Radon Map: local

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The point here is that you radon varies greatly over short distances. Just because your neighbor had no radon doesn’t mean you have no radon.

Every building’s potential risk is unique, depending on:

• Local soil

• Cracks and avenues in bedrock

• Construction contact of home to ground

• Pressurization of home (negative or positive)

Rn enters a home through the soil

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Add a bathroom fan, a dryer and stack-effect to this equation… The house doesn’t just collect radon, it sucks it up.

Ventilation and Weatherization

• Changes to a home’s envelope can affect radon

• Melting permafrost

Post and Pad!

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Would not expect to find radon in your home.

How do you know if you’ve got Radon?

• The only way to know is to test.• Self tests- average taken from 2 -7 days by

charcoal tray or 2 weeks- 1 year by alpha tract • Hired test- around 3 days by electret ion box

whereby you can get a dynamic readout• Continuous monitor- plug in….reads 24/7

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Radon levels fluctuate from day to day. So the longer the test, the more accurate.
Page 16: Radon: A short Presentation - Home - ATCEM · 2019-02-09 · Radon: A short Presentation. UAF Cooperative Extension . Leif Albertson. What is Radon • Colorless, odorless, radioactive

How to test

• Test when radon will be at the highest levels: During the heating season

• Longer tests give a clearer picture of radon levels

• Test on the lowest occupied level of the house

• Retest every 5 years (frequency depends on your situation)

Page 17: Radon: A short Presentation - Home - ATCEM · 2019-02-09 · Radon: A short Presentation. UAF Cooperative Extension . Leif Albertson. What is Radon • Colorless, odorless, radioactive

If you test positive, block all cracks and test again….

Page 18: Radon: A short Presentation - Home - ATCEM · 2019-02-09 · Radon: A short Presentation. UAF Cooperative Extension . Leif Albertson. What is Radon • Colorless, odorless, radioactive

If that doesn’t work, you may need a sub-slab ventilation system

Summary

• Radon is a naturally occurring gas that causes cancer

• We do not have great data for Rn in the state of Alaska

• It is easy to test for Radon• Once Radon is detected, it can be mitigated
