Radin Interprets Music Into Art

One of my favorites

A FEW DEMOS:•80% of purchasers were college educated with higher incomes • 60% of buyers were men• Women purchased as gifts for men; men purchased for themselves, or gifts for clients

Not an easy hobby; required fortitude

• Records were difficult to paint– Gained understanding of high cost of art – Vinyl with more songs/grooves reacted differently than those with fewer songs– 20% of all records were destroyed during any stage of the process– Took 30 hrs over at least 5 days to finish a record – Most destroyed in hour 29; a bit frustrating

• Sold my first 30 at local CD retailer only 3 months after starting– Radin was the sales rep, too

Developed unique angle based on my skills - A Mix of Research, Insights, Interpretation & Creativity

• I interpreted the music and transformed into art– Each record art was custom and unique

• I’d play the album, or listen to a song (online)• I’d read the cover, study the lyrics and research the artist• I’d sleep on it for a day, or 2, until an idea came to mind• A written story accompanied each record – providing insights from song to interpretation• If custom, I’d interview the buyer seeking end-user facts & incorporate

– The record became a personal reflection of individual– All art came with a signed letter

BRUCE …

Radin Art Interpretation (shortened): Life changed after 9/11. You’ll find an “A” cutting through the label. Do you think this stands for Afghanistan, or America? Purple was integrated throughout to honor the men and woman who suffered and serviced our country pre/post 911 – don’t they deserve a Purple Heart? Colors of green for money and copper for oil signify key economical drivers . The art is outlined in golden dots representing the golden times we seek.

Ave. , Bucktown and Lincoln Park areas, plus suburbs)– Sold off website– Social networking via non profits (No Facebook in 2001)– Participated in art fairs

PROMOTIONS/PR:– The Grammy Awards – Exhibits in restaurants, bars/clubs, Starbucks, libraries– Write, pitch & media placement– Created on loan program for local offices

Silly & Popular Question Asked: “Can I still listen to them?”

• What do you think?• These college educated buyers must have been sleeping in a few classes • My answer:

“No, the record cannot be played after painted; but, they can be played in your mind!”

Wrote a letter for each record --

• (THE START): It began in 2001 and it was a record year. We overcame the non-millennium bug, hanging chads with a near Presidential tie, and as 911, we became faced with the aftermath and lifestyle changes due to the World Trade Center bombings.

• (THE MIDDLE): Reviving past memories will help bring happiness into your world. Think of the fun times when vacationing, at parties, or spending quiet times with friends. Think of the music you listened to and how you felt while listening. Go back. Go back to a more relaxed, fun time in your life. Let your mind recall the memories.

• (THE END): Recollection Records are painted vinyl records that allow you to look at your favorite artist everyday -- as art. The vinyl is the medium. Each record was individually created with music, lyrics and artists’ history infused to create a unique design. If you peer at the art (color, line, texture, movement) – you’ll find the reflections of a particular song, mood and/or lyric. The art is meant to be provocative and to stimulate thinking.

Here’s how the letter ended…

• Hang your record where you can see it (a hallway, powder room, exercise room, your office). Let it make you laugh; let it make you feel good. Recollection Records are “Great Memories Transformed to Art”. Enjoy.

• COMMENTS RECEIVED: (Buyers, mothers, uncles, co-workers)– “I’ve never seen anything like this before; I LOVE it”. – “My son will love this; he’s so hard to buy for…”– “Even my daughter will let her husband hang this on a wall…”– “She likes anything Springsteen…”– “My husband saw this in his co-workers office; he wants 10 for each of his clients.”– “Can you paint a Phish album?” (I did)
