A Member’s Story

You’ll receive treatment designed especially

for you by a team with the expertise to

provide high-quality care. Working with you

in our Radiation Oncology Department will

be specialty physicians called radiation

oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists,

radiation therapists, registered nurses,

and licensed clinical social workers.

We treat approximately 400 patients every

day, adding up to thousands of patients

each year. The high volume of procedures

provides our specialty physicians with more

experience in their field. Your Radiation

Oncology team attends multidisciplinary

cancer conferences to determine and discuss

your treatment plan. We also use the latest

equipment for diagnosis, planning, and

treatment. Some of the highly specialized

machines used for treatment include a

Novalis external beam linear accelerator

for precision radiosurgery, Varian linear

accelerators, and a high dose rate (HDR) unit.

Your Radiation Oncology physicians,

therapists, and nurses will closely monitor

your treatment. We’re available to answer

your questions or address any concerns so

you can feel comfortable and well.

Mollie Sanders, a member from Idyllwild, was referred to Radiation Oncology after her lumpectomy. The following is her experience, in her own words.

For a while I stopped getting

mammograms, until a friend who’d had

breast cancer when she was young was really

adamant about my going in and getting one.

When I did, my doctor discovered a small lump.

I shed a few tears, but I really couldn’t cry over

something that had already happened.

I underwent radiation therapy five days a week

for about five weeks, but it didn’t bother me at

all. Everyone was really nice. It was nice being

around the other cancer patients. We played

bingo twice a week, and once we had a

potluck dinner. It took your mind away from

your problems.

Dr. Michael Tome treated me and was always

friendly. He listened to my concerns and always

answered my questions. I couldn’t have asked

for anyone better.

CALIDAD Y EXPERIENCIANuestro Departamento de Oncología

Radioterápica es un centro para el diagnóstico

y tratamiento de cáncer reconocido en todo

el país. Nuestro programa de residencia para

médicos y nuestros programas de capacitación

para terapeutas, dosimetristas y físicos han

mejorado la experiencia y capacidad de

nuestros equipos y de muchos departamentos

a lo largo y ancho del país. Y participamos en

investigaciones clínicas y capacitaciones en

curso que contribuyen en forma significativa

al conjunto de conocimientos que utilizan

los médicos en todas partes cuando toman

decisiones para el tratamiento.

DAMOS APOYOJunto con la atención médica, proveemos

los servicios de trabajadores sociales

experimentados que le ayudan con

asesoramiento y haciendo arreglos para

utilizar los recursos en la comunidad, como

vivienda provisional cerca del hospital o

servicios de transporte para Oncología

Radioterápica en varias instalaciones de

Kaiser Permanente.

amable.

Escuchaba

mis inquietudes y siempre contestaba mis

preguntas. No podría haber pedido a

nadie mejor.
