The Year One CurriculumIn Year One children begin to follow the Primary National Curriculum

At Radford Semele, our aim is to follow a broad and balanced curriculum. Many of our subjects are based on our termly themes – ‘Myself, My Family and My Home’, ‘The United Kingdom’ and ‘Buckets and Spades’.

English, History and Geography are based on our themes, as are Art and D&T. We take a cross-curricular approach to these - children will be able to make links between learning and use it to strengthen their understanding.

Maths and Science are taught as separate subjects. Children also learn about Computing, PSHE and Music, as well as having one R.E. day per half term. We have two P.E. sessions a week.

We usually have an English-based activity, a Maths lesson and a Phonics session daily. Theme, encompassing a wide variety of subjects, and Science are taught weekly. Occasionally we dedicate a day to a subject so that the children can have a greater opportunity to explore their ideas.

We do not start whole class lessons right from the start of Year One; instead, we progress from a structure that they are used to and gradually build to a whole class approach when the children are ready. Our lessons are engaging and often practical, encouraging children to learn for themselves.

Usually in September, we continue with a whole class input session and then the children will either have access to provision or will be working in a group with an adult.

Timetable

This is an example timetable based on our current schedule. In Autumn Term, provision will be available for the children not working with an adult following English and Maths input, as well as during afternoons.

The Classroom

The Year One classroom is designed with more tables and chairs, so that all children are able to work at the same time later in the year. Our tables are usually in groups so that children can work together as well as using them for different activities, although September may look a little different. We still have a large carpet area for input and group activities.

At the start of the year, some the tables will be used for different areas of provision, such as fine motor skills and mark-making. Year One has their own role-play kitchen, decorated and resourced according to our theme. We also have resources for several other activities, such as construction and making.

Continuous Provision in Year One Children have access to continuous provision throughout Year One, but especially during the Autumn Term. Over the course of the year, we usually aim to move towards whole class learning while still allowing the children chance to access provision.

We ensure that children are able to continue developing their skills and enhance the different areas to provide challenge to the children. Resources and areas are tailored to children’s interests and to our themes.

Children are encouraged to try a variety of activities, where they will find specific challenges should they wish to engage with them.

Over the course of the week, there is a piece of independent work that the children are expected to complete (such as a free write, or ordering numbers) but it is up to them when they choose to do this work.

ReadingIn Year One, we make sure that we hear each child read at least once a week. At the start of Year One, we will ask children to come and read individually.

As we progress, we focus on both fluency in reading and comprehension skills. The class is split into two and we work on a rota system in set Reading sessions. Half of the class will spend two days reading for pleasure in the library while an adult hears individual readers. The other half stays in the classroom and begins to learn some comprehension skills, with an adult reading a text out loud and the children answering questions. The groups then switch after two days.

After your child has read, they will have the opportunity to change their reading book. This usually is once a week; however, your child may ask to keep their book if they have not yet finished it. We will then change it after hearing them the following week.

Children in Year One are encouraged to access the library independently.

The library is open during the second half of lunchtime and operated by older pupils who will help Year One look for and take out books.

We remind the children that the library is available and prompt them to go choose a book, but they may sometimes choose not to.

When returning books, children can do so during library opening times or they can give them to one of us.

Homework

Throughout Year One, children are expected to read with their grownups at home. We ask that you read with them several times a week and record it in their Reading Diaries so we can see how they’ve been getting on at home.

As the children progress, we will start giving them spellings to learn. These will either be based on phonics or will be from the list of ‘Year One common exception words’ – words that children are expected to know by the end of Year One that cannot be spelt out phonetically. Children will have 5-10 words a week. We only move on to spellings when children are ready for them.

Later on in the year, usually in the Spring term, children start working on take home maths booklets. These questions work on strengthening key skills and we mark them once a week. These books are part of a series that the children will work on throughout the school. Again, we begin these booklets when the children are ready.

Assessment Information At the start of Year One, we build on the Early Learning Goals from reception. We support all children who have not yet met the Goals and help them achieve this. Adult-supported activities and groups take place to help children as well as further access to provision.

Throughout the year, we will be working towards the aims of Year One and Key Stage 1. We observe children in provision as well as marking their work and noting their achievements.

At the end of Year One, there is a Phonics Screening Check. This is to check each child’s ability to blend individual sounds. More information on this will be available in the Summer term.

MorningsBefore school has started, we ask that you wait on the playground with your children. Please don’t come past the Year One and Two gate until the bell rings.

Usually, at the start of Year One, parents/carers of Year One children can come in with them into the cloakroom and help them hang up their belongings. This September, however, it may look a little different.

We ask that the children don’t bring large bags or backpacks into school, as there is limited space in the cloakroom. A book bag, P.E. kit and coat are all they should need. If they need anything extra due to current circumstances, we will let you know.

Parents/carers shouldn’t come into the classroom itself. Children should come in independently with their water bottle and anything else that they need for that day.

We encourage the children to develop their independence and so, after half term, we usually ask that parents/carers don’t come in the outside door.

If there is a message that you need to pass on about that day, you can do so briefly in the morning or contact the office.

LunchtimeAll children in Key Stage 1 are entitled to a free school meal

Our lunches are provided by Educaterers. Information about them and sample menus can be found here: https://educaterers.co.uk/our-menus

We operate a colour band system:Red – meat option Green – vegetarian option Brown – jacket potato with either cheese, baked beans or tuna

There are special menus for children with allergies and specific dietary requirements. These children are given a PURPLEband to wear too.

As in Reception, children will make their choice after morning registration. We will then give them their bands just before lunch.

Children in Years One, Two and Three have a rota system in place to take it in turns at lunch time. We will inform them what order they should go to lunch in on a daily basis.

If it is their turn to go first, children will go straight into lunch at 12:15. If they are second or third, they will go outside first to have a short play. A midday supervisor will then call the children in as a class. After eating their lunch, they will then go back outside for a longer play. Midday supervisors will make sure that all children go in at the right time for their lunch.

If your child attends a lunchtime club, they will go straight for lunch regardless of the rota.

HometimeAt the end of the day, please wait on the playground for us to bring your children out. We will help them collect their belongings and bring them to the Year One and Two gate at the end of the day.

If your child will be attending any after-school clubs, please let us know so we can make sure they get to the right place.

Please ensure that we are aware of any adults who are collecting them. If someone is picking them up who is not on their consent form, let us know in the morning or contact the office. If your child informs us that they are going home with someone else, we cannot let them leave until we have checked with you.

If you would like to have a brief chat at the end of the day, I am happy to do so once all other children have been sent to their parents/carers. Longer discussions will need an appointment.
