RADAR SURABAYA, FRIDAY, AUGUST 03, 2012 60 Percent Not being Recorded SURABAYA – There are only 2 cases of cleft recorded in Dinas Kesehatan Surabaya in 2012. However, this does not mean the number of cleft lip in Surabaya has decreased. In fact, there are many cleft cases which have not been reported to Dinkes Surabaya. Dr. Esti Martiana Rachmi, Head of Dinkes Surabaya said the number of cleft cases in Surabaya is much lower as compared to other cities such as Malang, Madura, Tuban, Tulungagung, Bojonegoro. “Whenever we have a cleft surgery organized for the underprivileged, only a few will register for it. In 2008, we planned to perform surgery for 100 people but only 10 registered for it” said Esti when signing the MOU with Yayasan Peduli Bibir Sumbing also known as Cleft Care Foundation Indonesia (CCFI), in the Dinkes’s meeting room, Jl. Jemursari, yesterday. Dr. Catherine Lee, Patron, Founder and Children Coordinator of CCFI said, “There are many reasons for not proceeding with cleft surgery. Some of them are in hiding because of shame, some do not have any money and some are malnourished or sick. Almost 60% of the cleft cases are not reported because the patients are in hiding.
