Congratulations to our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the 2013 Body Fat Loss Contest. From left to right is third place winner George Kohl, First Place winner Connor Peck, and second place winner Dan Rosenbaum. The key to third place winner George’s success was to make healthy eating a positive way of living. He went from eating large meals less often to eating smaller meals more frequently. He reduced his processed carbohydrate and sugar consumption and opted for non-processed carbs only when they were earned and increased his lean protein intake. George’s training was a combination of weight lifting, interval sprints and Fitness Director, Brian Dean’s Strongman classes. The key to second place winner Dan’s success was that he ate more often (4-5 times per day) and cut down on the carbs, such as bread and dessert. He also cut out white rice and pasta and replaced it with roasted vegetables and lean meats. Dan started focusing on making sure he got some Whey Protein powder (30 grams of protein at least) within 15 minutes after strength sessions. Dan’s training focused on a series of interval training workouts 3 times a week, with a mental-health run on the Dam trail on Saturdays. The key to first place winner Connor’s success started with

Connor using several tools and apps to keep track of his weight, activity, and diet. With the use of these tools and Brian Dean’s weekly tips, Connor was able to change the way he was working out and dieting. In the beginning he was focused on heavy cardio, low intensity weight training and a low calorie diet. By the end he was more focused on high impact circuit training 3 times per week with 6 weight lifting stations and a high intensity interval cardio session to cap off each set. The other 3 times per week he would focus on core workouts as he had tweaked his back just before starting the challenge due to a lack of focus on this area. He would plan out and eat 7 meals per day with 5 of them composed of animal meat and vegetables, while the other two would be an after workout whey protein shake and a casein protein desert shake. Connor drank over a gallon of water per day and gave up all alcohol, juice or other high calorie drinks. Now that the challenge is over Connor is down a total of 100 pounds from his highest weight last May and is feeling great. Connor says he still has more work to do, but feels much more confident and will continue with his new lifestyle.

Hopefully everyone is leaving this contest with a better understanding of how easy it actually is to incorporate a healthy diet into their lives.

Brian Dean (LGSRC Fitness Director), MS, PES, CES, CSCS

THE LOS GATOS SWIM & RACQUET CLUBWISHES EVERYONE A HAPPY AND SAFEFOURTH OF JULY!

Lap swimming is available year-round. You may have to share a lane with other swimmers. If this is the case, please let the person(s) know you are in the lane before you begin to swim. If more than two swimmers are in a lane please swim counter-clockwise (circle swim), keeping to the right side of the lane.

Generally, lanes are available in both the large pool as well as the training pool. However, during the summer when swim lessons and swim team are in session, lap swimming is not available in the training pool.

The Club has kickboards, pull buoys, belts, and paddles available for adult use only. These items are locked adjacent to the pools in a storage cabinet.
