Expert AnalysisBy Michael Hammersly

BEST BET: Originaire (9th race)

First Race

1. Going to Vegas 2. Too Much Heaven 3. Sugar Pickel

~GOING TO VEGAS^ appears to have put it all together. After 4 nice outings to start his career came a dull run on dirt at LRC Dec. 15 but he returned to turf here Jan. 12 at thistrip, was a good 2nd vs. maidens and then smartly beat maidens on this course at this trip Feb. 7. He has the speed to be in a good spot from the start, biding his time until asked.~TOO MUCH HEAVEN^ has something no one else in here possesses - a win over winners. That's not small matter, either, as it came on this course at this trip Jan. 11. That wasalso his first start in 2 1/2 months so he can improve. His speed means he's the one to catch, too. ~SUGAR PICKEL^ was away slowly here Jan. 11 in his first try vs. winners, firsttry routing and first try on turf but kept to his task for 4th behind TOO MUCH HEAVEN. He can benefit from that experience and could well cut into, negate or overcome that gap, though he got stuck with a far-outside post again.

Second Race

1. Royal Insider 2. Roaring Fork 3. Implicitly

~ROYAL INSIDER^ comes here sharp as a tack having won 4 of his last 6, finishing 2nd in the 2 losses. He thinks he owns this place (4 of his 5 wins have come here) and has thattactical speed to be in a good spot from the start. Yes, this longer distance is uncharted waters but his pedigree says it's within his reach. ~ROARING FORK^ dueled and gave wayreadily here Feb. 14, but not only did he duel, he did so on turf which hasn't been his best footing (5-0-1-0); That was his first start off the claim for Miller who moves him back todirt. It's also nice to see Miller does not again risk him for a tag. This guy is bred all over to handle this 10f trip. ~IMPLICITLY^ has ample speed and if he can avoid a duel could bein the thick of it all the way around. The return to dirt has to help, too, as turf isn't his game (6-0-0-1).

Third Race

1. Castle Gate 2. Factorial 3. Camby

~CASTLE GATE^ looked super blasting maiden claimers at DMR Aug. 31. Trouble is, he hasn't been seen since. The good news is Mullins claimed him that day and bringshim back with no tag attached. The colt has been working in super fashion for this return. ~FACTORIAL^ may be the one to beat, though his overall smart record has all beenaccomplished on turf. His lone dirt try wasn't much, though in his defense that was also his career debut and came a long time ago. He's surely a much better horse now and pedigree-wise there's no reason he shouldn't like this footing. ~CAMBY^ was no factor here Jan. 26 but that came on turf, vs. tougher, off a layoff. He's down in class and back to dirt. In fact,he was a good 2nd as the favorite in a race like this here Oct. 20, so he fits.

Fourth Race

1. Galilean 2. Dessman 3. Principe Carlo

~GALILEAN^ looked like he might be Ky. Derby material but after a dull 5th in the G1 Arkansas Derby last April 13 he went to the bench and hasn't been seen since. The $600Kson of champion juvenile male Uncle Mo has worked superbly for this return and his speed can have him in a good spot from the start. ~DESSMAN^ looked highly promising lastwinter, too, as he nearly won the G2 San Vicente here and was then a solid 2nd routing on OP dirt March 16. However, he hasn't been seen since so like the top pick he must dealwith a long layoff, but the $750K son of multiple G1 SW Union Rags has worked well and Baffert is, of course, strong off the bench. ~PRINCIPE CARLO^ brings the best currentform into this as the son of Coil was a smashing sprint winner here Jan. 18. He was claimed by Hanson who brings him back where he can't lose him via another claim. He loves thistrip (6-3-3-0).

Fifth Race

1. Predictable Tully 2. Reducta 3. Lucia's Design

~PREDICTABLE TULLY^ opened up and tired in her U.S. debut in a race like this here Dec. 29, then flattened out when 3rd in a race like this here Jan. 20. Those were her first2 starts in the States and first action of any kind in a few months so she might now be set for her best. ~REDUCTA^ had a troubled start and wide trip when 5th sprinting here Feb.1. She moves to a longer game here which might help. ~LUCIA'S DESIGN^ has been knocking on the door with 3 straight good races on this course at this trip. All came vs. high-priced maiden claimers so she's up in class today, but she may well have figured out things and is ready for the class hike. She worked very nicely recently to indicate she's doingwell.

Sixth Race

1. Fellow Citizen 2. Hoop Dream 3. Luck Is Golden

~FELLOW CITIZEN^ ran very well to be 2nd in his debut at LRC in July 2018. However, he wasn't seen for another 18 months. At least when he came back here Jan. 31 he showedthe speed to duel in a turf sprint before tiring to 6th. He can surely benefit from that outing, it's very nice to see no drop and no layoff since. He's worked steadily and gets blinkers.~HOOP DREAM^ chased the pace before tiring to end up a well-beaten 4th in a race like this here Jan. 5. He can benefit from that outings and has worked in solid fashion since.~LUCK IS GOLDEN^ appears to have an ample foundation for this first run with lots of works for a trainer who does quite well first time out.

Seventh Race

1. Hariboux 2. Smooth Like Strait 3. Goliad

~HARIBOUX^ finished with gusto to be a good 2nd in the Eddie Logan here Dec. 29 to Encoder, who would likely be favored if he were in here. This son of Havana Gold has beenfreshened since and should get the right kind of pace to bolster his late kick. ~SMOOTH LIKE STRAIT^ easily beat the top pick when winning the G3 Cecil B. DeMille at DMRDec. 1 (HARIBOUX was 9th). SMOOTH LIKE STRAIT used his speed for that and his other win, though he then dueled in the Eddie Logan before tiring to 4th. His speed makeshim scary but as in the Logan he faces other speed. ~GOLIAD^ ran on well for 2nd in the DeMille but then ended up dueling for the lead in the Logan before giving way to 8th.That's certainly not how he wants to run so if they can get him back off the pace to stalk as in his first 3 good efforts he can be dangerous.

Eighth Race

1. Mongolian Humor 2. Noble Contessa 3. Miss Stormy D

~MONGOLIAN HUMOR^ rallied strongly to be a sharp 2nd sprinting for $20K here Jan. 31. Not only did Miller claim her (and he's strong off the claim) he now doubles her invalue, moving her up multiple levels despite the fact she's out of 'jail'. While that good run came sprinting, note 2 wins at this distance so the trip is no issue. And she's got someback-class to bolster the notion she can handle this class hike. ~NOBLE CONTESSA^ is likely the one to beat coming off a romping win over $40K foes going longer here last timeout Jan. 12. Her other 2 wins came at this trip so the distance cutback is no problem and she's got the speed to be in the thick of it from the start. ~MISS STORMY D^ stalked andstayed on to be 2nd routing at this level here last time out Jan. 31, a run that looks even better when you note it was her first route and she finished almost 7 lengths clear of 3rd. Herspeed can help her utilize the fence and be in it from the bell.

Ninth Race

1. Originaire 2. Wound Tight 3. Foray

~ORIGINAIRE^ had the misfortune of chasing top turfer Mo Forza in 3 straight in the fall/winter, including rallying for 2nd behind that foe in the G2 Mathis Bros. Mile here Dec.28. He dropped to this level going a mile here Jan. 20 but was a bit flat while still finishing 2nd. He was closer to the pace from the start that day and it might have taken a bit awayfrom his late kick. HE gets an extra furlong with which to work today and there are a few speed types in here to give him the right type of pace. ~WOUND TIGHT^ continues hissuper form having won his last 2 including a romping win in a Cal-bred stakes here Jan. 18 at this same trip. He figures prominent from the start but has shown he's no need-the-leadtype, too. ~FORAY^ stalked, surged to the lead going a mile at this level here Jan. 20 but flattened out, ending up 3rd just behind ORIGINAIRE in 2nd. That was his first start ina couple months so he could move forward and his only try at this trip came at this level on this course last Oct. 5 and he was a strong 2nd (beaten a nose). His speed with the railshould have him in the thick of it from the bell.
