34 Years and CountingThe 2015 Great Allegany Run

By Chris Leyen

Cumberland, MD--Threats of flood-ing and the promise of steady rain couldn’t dampen spirits of the runners that came out October 3rd to the 2015 Great Allegany Run. Despite a num-ber of challenges, the persistence of longtime race director Dave Treber, the Queen City Striders (QCS) and the new addition of the RacePacket Timing and Event Management team brought the community together to continue this longstanding Western Maryland tradition. The 34th Annual Great Allegany Run began at 8:00am at the Kemp Lodge in Mount Sav-age and wound down route 36 to the Narrows, past the CSX rail line and in the shadow of the Great Allegany Passage, steadily declining 475 ft over the first 10k before finishing in Down-town Cumberland where finishers were greeted with fresh-brewed local coffee from Café Mark, and donuts from M + M Bake Shop, whose storefront sits just 30 yards from the finish line. This year’s race featured a smaller field than in previous years, primarily due to the threat of inclement weather if Hur-ricane Joaquin made landfall during the race, but those who came out enjoyed the same no-frill classic PR road race that those privileged to know about the Great Allegany Run have come to expect.

Lucas Young (20) of Ridgeley, West Virginia won the 15k in 53:47, finish-ing a minute and a half before Mark Neff (53), coming in at 55:25. Heather Parks (40) another West Virginian, hailing from Bruceton Mills, won the Women’s Division, coming in 3rd overall in 1:00:19 kicking it in at the fin-ish to come in 12 seconds before Tim Yoder of Philadelphia (1:00:31) and a full 6 minutes before the second-place female, Jackie Horvath (51, Liognier, PA, 1:06:30). The 5k, an out-and-back through Downtown Cumberland also began at 8:00am and was won by a

father-son duo. Shane May (41) of Bedford, PA was the first finisher to cross the finish line in 17:55, followed by his son, Van May (12) in 20:48. The first Cumberland resident to finish was third-place male, Neil Alexander (30) in 23:52. Lauren Yoder was the first place Female 5k finisher, in 26:51, edging out Megan Krum of Lavale, MD, who fin-ished in 26:59.Full Results for the 15k and 5k are available on RacePacket. Additional detailed result information and finishers certificates available at It-sYourRace. For HD photographs of this event, visit Joe’s Sport Photography.

The 34th Annual Great Allegany Run remained true to its roots, featuring a tight-knit local crowd, and runners travelling from further away in pursuit of a PR that they could only dream of on another course. Those who stuck around for the Queen City Film Fes-tival, also hosted at the Ramada Inn Downtown Cumberland on October 2nd and 3rd got the chance to meet Cumberland Native Eddie Deezen (Eugene from the 1978 film Grease) and check out his short film “I Love You, Eddie Deezen” as well as a host of other independent films. The festival typifies the cultural fare unique to the Historic Arts and Culture District of Cumberland that adds that special des-tination element to an already exciting race. Of course, this race would not be possible without the commitment of the community. Special thanks to the City of Cumberland, the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office, Cumberland Police Department and Maryland State Troop-ers who aided as Course Marshals and provided the lead motorcycles for the 15k and 5k. The YMCA donated buses to transport runners from the Ramada Inn in Downtown Cumberland to Mt. Savage, and several volunteers from Frostburg State University served to man water stations, set out over 6 miles of cones along route 36/40 and provide support at the finish line. With the renewed efforts and new partner-ship between the QCS and RacePack-et, we look an even better 35th annual Great Allegany Run in 2016.

TEACHING OLD DOGS NEW TRICKS By Jeff Horowitz

Let’s face it – long distance running isn’t exactly a riveting sport. There are no last minute home runs, acrobatic goals, or diving receptions. All that we runners do is put one foot in front of the other. Again and again, until we reach the finish line.

Racing adds a new dimension to our running. On those occasions, our repetitive sport is enlivened by cheering crowds, music, and finish line festivals. Still, once a race distance is conquered, much of the suspense of completing the event is lost. Racing could still be fun, but with each completed race, a bit more complacency sets in. Eventually, boredom can take over. We might hope for faster times or perhaps even a new PR, but the fear of attempting something totally new and unknown is forever gone.

That was the phase that I was in when I heard from Jose Ortiz. He and I had run together some time ago with a loosely-knit group of early morning athletes, but we had lost touch over the years. I found out that Jose was recruiting participants in a new event that he was organizing, which he called Bike To Brooklyn. The idea was to set out cycling from northwest DC before dawn on a Friday, overnight in Princeton NJ, and get to New York City in time to participate in the Brooklyn Rock’n’Roll Half Marathon. It sounded crazy on so many levels that I couldn’t believe his audacity in even suggesting it. Of course, I told him to count me in.

Aside from the fearful challenge of completing a 260 mile bike ride and half marathon in less than 30 hours, the really compelling reason for agreeing to go was the reason why Jose was putting together this team. Jose was a successful businessman and endurance athlete, but his journey included overcoming addiction and homelessness. He gives the credit to a mentor who believed in him, and a family that never gave up on him. He now sought to extend this helping hand to others by creating a non-profit mentoring organization called Run Hope Work, in which he uses long distance sport to help young people in crisis take the steps to achieve success in life. He promises a job to everyone who completes his program. Jose created Bike To Brooklyn as a fundraising event to support Run Hope Work; we were to be his guinea pigs to determine the feasibility of this idea.

When departure day rolled around, I rode my bike over to the meeting spot, wearing a backpack filled with cycling gear, and sporting a small duffel bag holding my running shoes and clothing. We lined up for a photo, and then set out, trailed by our support van.

An hour later I had a sudden sinking feeling. I remembered putting my backpack in the van, but I couldn’t remember if I threw in my duffel. A quick check at the next rest stop confirmed my fears. Like a scene from a panic

dream, I was on my way to a race without any running shoes. Unbelievable.

I took a deep breath and remembered that there’s usually no gear problem that couldn’t be solved with money. Surely I’d find shoes to buy somewhere on Route 1. I did, and so that problem was solved.

As we progressed north, our group endured driving rain, wind, freezing cold, and then, later, hot sun and soaring temperatures. We persevered to New Castle, Delaware, where we were behind schedule and faced with a quick moving thunderstorm. Discretion was the better part of valor as we quick arranged for van transport up to Princeton, New Jersey, where we piled into our hotel for a brief dinner and rest stop before setting out again just past midnight for the final overnight push to Brooklyn.

At sunrise we were pedaling over the Brooklyn Bridge, we were energized by the beautiful sight of the Manhattan Bridge to our left and the Statue of Liberty to our right as we rode beneath the bridge’s famous arched towers. Adrenaline and sugar powered us to the start line, where we joined some 18,000 other participants for a romp around Prospect Park and Ocean Boulevard.

When we met up back out our host house, we were exhausted emotionally and physically, but thrilled at what we had accomplished. We had discovered logistical problems that would have to be solved before future teams set out, but we had met our fears and doubts and had overcome them. It was good to experience that again for the first time.
