Bosworth There was Welsh 20k Record from Heather Lewis in 99:58 and 5th fastest 20k New Zealand time ever by Alana Barber, big statements from both athletes. Dane Bird-Smith won the men's 20k easily after walking the first 5k with Alex Wright and Tom Bosworth. Quentin Rew (New Zealand) finished second followed by two Irish athletes Luke Hickey and Brendan Boyce. Boyce will compete in the 50k in Zurich in August. Wright was later Disqualified. Tom Bosworth walked a slightly disappointing 89:10 as he finished 5th overall, but more importantly was the first British man across the line, the race also doubled up as the European championships trial. He already had 2 qualifying times for Zurich and so just needed to finish top 2 (British male) to clinch a place on the plane. He walked with a nerve injury which came on a few days before the race. In the boys 10k Cameron Corbishley put DQ in his previous race behind him and walked a strong 10k in 47.40 Followed in second by Callum Wilkinson and Guy Thomas in third. Injury forced Jo Atkinson (nee Jackson) and Ellie Dooley out at 9k and 4k respectively, also Jamie Higgins in the men's 20k dropped out due to injury. "Today's race in York was a tough one, I'd struggled with a small injury all week, but knew all I needed was to be top to Brit in the Trial today to secure my place on the plane to Zurich in August. It’s the first time I'd ever been in the situation where I had two qualifying times for a championships, so the pressure was off. I wanted to put in a good performance for everyone who came out to watch me so I feel I've left some people disappointed as I was not able to put on a good show. Plenty more to come from me, now I can just concentrate on putting in a strong performance in Zurich." Various reports by G. Smolinski Hewitt Cup 2014 - Round 3 - 3.6.2014 This year’s Hewitt Cup 2km. race walking series saw great competition in both boy’s and girl’s categories. Now in its 74th year, the individual standings of the league are based on a handicapping system which encourages all competitors to improve, or get close to, their best times over the 3 race series. In the boy’s race Benjamin Allen (Leysland High School) made it 2 wins out of 2 races he competed in. Marty Ross just pipped Jake Fish (both Blaby Stokes Striders) in the race itself. However Jake retained the Hewitt Cup ahead of Marty with Jack Harrison in third place overall. Laura Achurch (Leysland High School) also won her second race of the series but Hollie Maddison won the title thanks to her consistent performances during the 3 races. Laura (the 2011 Champion) had to be content with the runner-up slot with Rhea Harris and Lyla Bryan tying for the bronze medal slot. Style Awards were awarded by the judges to Jake, Frank, and Lyla. Hollie equaled Emma Achurch’s total of 15 style award certificates – a great achievement to end a great evening for her!

Peter / Flers / Keswick Cups – 10.6.14

Emma Achurch (Countesthorpe College) continued her impressive series of performances to win the Keswick Cup for the first time as leading Leicestershire Over 15 girl. Previous winner, Jasmine Nicholls (Leeds Met University) was runner-up as both smashed the 10 minute barrier for the 2km. distance. Leysland High School’s Emma Achurch took home the Flers Trophy (awarded to the leading Under 15 girl). Blaby Stokes’ Hollie Maddison and Lyla Bryan took the other podium places in this category. In the Peter Cup race (now in its 62nd year!!) for Under 15 Boys, Benjamin Allen (Leysland High School) made it a hat trick of successes in this category. Marty Ross and Jake Fish (both Stokes Striders) won silver and bronze medals respectively.

Peter / Flers / Keswick Cups cont’d The handsome Livingstone House cup for top Leics school team has been competed for since 1957 and the Stokes squad set a new record by becoming the first school to win it for a ninth time. A special “thank you” must go to all the members of Leicester Walking Club (and mums and dads) for their help in timekeeping and judging in the eight races held this year. Without their support and expertise these events would not have taken place.

The Primary School County Championships race walk over 1 kilometer was also held at Humberstone Park. In an exciting finish Marty Ross just held off Jake Fish to win his first County crown. Frank Bannister took the bronze ahead of Jack Harrison. Hollie Maddison (Blaby Stokes) took the County girl’s title with a confident walk ahead of Lyla Bryan and Rhea Harris.

SIX NEW CHAMPIONSHIP BEST PERFOMANCES by E. Horwill SCOTLAND COMPETE IN THE AGE RELATED TEAM COMPETITION FOR THE FIRST TIME

A record field of 39 competitors (from 43 entries) competed in the 8th BMAF/EAMA 5km road walk. A mild morning with slight drizzle provided excellent conditions. Good road surfaces also contributed to splendid performances. Walkers and Runners always enjoy this unique three laps of the Lancashire town centre. The local Festival of Racing committee arrange road closures and Marshalls to ensure a traffic free course. Local awards for the leading 3 men and women in the walk and running championships were presented by the local Mayor immediately after the completion of the races. The main BMAF and EAMA awards were presented a little later at the Leisure Centre. Colin Turner, double World Champion in Budapest, led the six new championship best performances and won the Men's Age Related award while Andrea Lennon, Mark Williams and Tony Taylor all bettered their previous best marks. Walkers and runners always enjoy competing together and as usual the joint presentation ceremony was a most enjoyable climax to the day. Andrew Fraser is to be congratulated for organising Scotland's first ever team for the EAMA Age Related International Competition. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this most enjoyable championship. Tom Bosworth on his preparations for Zurich

"On Tuesday my place in the British Team for the European Championships in Zurich was confirmed! Yay! I will be the only British walker competing at the championships, but am currently training at altitude with the other GB Endurance athletes in Font-Romeu in preparation. This will be my first European Athletics Championships and my second race for GB this season. I'm really looking forward to racing at a major championships which will be awesome prep for next year’s World champs and Rio Olympics in 2016! I was confident of my selection for Zurich after getting the qualifying time (1:23:30) for the 20k twice this year. I hope to better my 1:22:20 from April in Zurich, or if the conditions are tough to put in a performance of that scale! I also won the Trials for the Europeans in York in June which confirmed my place then and there. This one really means a lot to me. After missing out on the London Olympics by 19 seconds in 2012 and being unsuccessful in selection for Moscow World Champs last year with only 3 'B' standards, I was over the moon to get this year’s qualifying time done and dusted. It will also be counted toward next year’s World Championships in Beijing, so it was a meaningful progression forward. In 2010, Johanna Atkinson (nee Jackson), current Commonwealth Games gold medallist gave me a few good words of advice. 'Keep plugging away at those qualifying times, because as soon as you walk it, you will keep doing it'. It turns out she wasn't wrong, but it didn't feel like that back then!!

And so this season could not have been better so far. My new PB puts me 3rd on the British All-time list, I'm the first British man to ever walk under 1:23:00 more than once in a season, as well as reclaiming my 5k British record. But there is still space for one more big performance to top off 2014, and set me up nicely for 2015. Training is entering its final stage of the season with only 4 weeks until race day. Some strong miles here at altitude will set me up and that’s exactly what’s been happening. Training in such beautiful environments with the GB team has made it much easier and even enjoyable! I'm even getting a tan! Great food, great coffee and great training! I even took a selfie after training it was that awesome! Now I can't wait to race in Zurich and make everyone who has supported me in Leeds and Kent over the years proud. My plan to make race walking big in the UK is still intact and stronger than ever!! From a sunny mountain I sign off for now." If you feel it may be of interest then please add it in. Also I'm not sure if anyone sent you an update from the National 5k and the European Champs Trials in Birmingham last month. It was again a great set of results and a fantastic promotion of walking. Especially with Dane Bird-Smith walking 19:14, to take the British All Comers record with myself just 2 seconds behind in a new British Record of 19:16, (11 seconds faster than Alex Wright's previous record set at the same event in 2013). Quentin Rew (NZL) was 3rd in 20:07 and Jamie Higgins 4th in 20:54. With yesterday’s National 10k Champion 5th in 21:52 Heather Lewis Won the Senior Women’s 5k in 22:09, just holding off Alana Barber by 2 seconds (22:11), Emma Achurch Also the new National 10k Champion was third in 24:14. All three set new PBs! You can follow more of Tom’s progress on his blog: http://www.kentsportsnews.com/blog-bosworth-thrilled-with-times-19-07-2014/

Various articles by B. Adams 4th South Yorkshire League :S.H. Uni City Stadium: 10 June 2014 Everyone started together in this 1,000m track race, then the times were adjusted afterward according to their handicap marks. We were also joined by 6 new primary school walkers who had just had a coaching session in preparation for the City Finals. The top three walkers on handicap were Simon beating his handicap mark by 28 second, Estelle Wade of Nether Green by 17 secs and Molly Meleady-Hanley by 14 secs. South Yorkshire Schools AA: Cudworth: 14 June 2014 All the walkers were representing Sheffield Schools and the race went very much to form with Ana walking at ‘cruise’ pace as she was also running in the 1,500m about an hour later (5.54 in 2nd) Alana also went on to run later in the day …… 800m, (6th in 2.36.5). Both girls were running against opposition a year older. There was a good race for fourth place between Ella and new walker Heather Wilde who improved almost 30 seconds since the City Champs. In the finishing straight Ella was able to raise her pace easier than Heather without it affecting her technique. Sheffield Primary Schools Finals: S.H. Uni City Stadium: 19 June 2014

260 youngsters were involved in trying to qualify for the Sheffield City Finals which took place in very warm conditions. We had varied quality of walking. The 2 extremes … the Y5 Boys was a very difficult race for the 5 judges to judge whilst the Y6 girls put on a great display of walking. I would have loved to have just sat back& watched this race. Molly Meleady-Hanley not surprisingly dominated it from the start for a 15 sec victory with about 10 secs covering the next 7 or 8 walkers. Three of the girls who attended a recent coaching session produced excellent performances Emily Goulding in particular improved by 13 secs.

5th South Yorkshire League : Millhouses Park: 20 June 2014 On a very warm evening this race took place amid the setting up of tents & ‘stuff’ for the ‘Cliffhanger’ event. In these warm conditions Melissa was the only one to beat her target time for a comfortable win with a PB. Two close races in the middle of the field as Ana passed Simon just before the line for third, but Ella just held off Molly’s late charge. It was great to see Orla Hughes having another go at walking the day after finishing 11 in the City Schools Y6 finals. I was so impressed by her technique in her heat that even though she was not in a qualifying place but I was able to advance her into the finals. In tonight’s race Orla missed the correct turning point and walked over distance, if we double her time for the second lap (3.37) it indicates that she should have done around 7.14. Jubilee Trophy : S.H. Uni City Stadium: 30 June 2014 The concept of this race is the athlete chooses the distance and a target time. The one who gets nearest to their target wins. Simon Pugh chose 3km in a target of 18.29, with laps constantly a couple of seconds either side of 2.30 he was always on target. A last lap of 2.15 took him 9 seconds inside his set time. His last laps were watched closely by Ana Garcia who had finished 4 min earlier 24 seconds inside her 15.00 target. Ana winner for the last two years (both only 2 secs. off target) looked a little annoyed that she had let another win elude her by pushing a little too hard. It was great to see the Schools Y5 600m City Champion tackling his first 1,000m race. 6th South Yorkshire League: Millhouses Park: 15 July 2014 Another very warm evening and our usual field boosted by the presence of 3 new primary youngsters. Eight walkers were in the 125m finishing straight at the same time. Only Ana was off this pace, frustrated by having one or other shoe lace come lose on 4 occasions! Not through lack of preparation or lack of care but due to new racing shoes with inappropriate laces that slide undone… soon to be replaced! Ella Sharkey took a 2 second victory from Kai Cundey, the only two to beat their target time. Ella opened up a five point lead in the league. Sunday June 29th 2014., Sarnia Walking Club Heritage Group Championships Race 7: 20 kilometres road walk by R. Elliott Win for Stuart Stuart Le Noury secured a win in the Sarnia Walking Clubs Heritage Group Championships, but found second place Phil Lockwood a lot closer to him at the finish than he might have expected. Stuart started in good form, going through 5 kms in 27.33 and 10 kms in 55.24, before a terrible second half that took him over 67 minutes to complete. Phil could not capitalize on the slow down as he still found himself three minutes down at the finish. Third place went to Rob Elliott in 2.13.18, three minutes up on visitor Sean Pender. Kevin Le Noury held Dave Dorey off soon after by four minutes. Jayne Le Noury took the points in the women’s section finishing in just under 2 hours 36 minutes. Heritage Group Championships Race 8 by R. Elliott Jason Le Noury reversed the first and second positions of the previous Guernsey race as he beat brother Stuart to the line in the Sarnia Walking Club Heritage Group Championship walk over 3,000 metres. Jason recorded a time of 14.19, finishing sixteen seconds clear of Stuart. Phil Lockwood was third in 16.54. Quickest of the women was new member Marie Macdonald in 21.40, ahead of another new member Jayne Golborne in 21.54. Kay Coulson took third place. Sarnia Walking Club Mick Le Sauvage 75th birthday walk by R. Elliott An extra race was added to the Sarnia Walking Club calendar to celebrate the 75th birthday of stalwart Mick Le Sauvage. Fittingly the race was over a distance of 7,500 metres on the 1,500 metres lap at Les Amarreurs. Mick finished in the middle of the 12 strong field crossing the line in 54.05. First to finish was Stuart Le Noury who just beat 40 minutes, closely followed by brother Jason. Phil Lockwood was a distant third in 44.43. Relative newcomers to race walking Marie Macdonald and Jayne Golborne were the first women to finish in 56.37 after a good battle during the race, a few minutes ahead of Kay Coulson.

Race Walking Record In association with the Race Walking Association

June & July 2014

On Saturday 13th September the Race Walking Association are to stage a Tribute Luncheon in honour of the 61 walkers who have represented England, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man at the Commonwealth Games since race walking was introduced in 1966 when the games were held in Jamaica. On that occasion England provided the winner in Ron Wallwork who won the 20miles event and he is still active in our sport today!

(Photo of Ron Wallwork by Express Newspapers/Getty Images) Double Olympian Joanna Jackson (England) is a reigning Commonwealth Games Champion and she will reign somewhat longer due to our event being edged off the 2014 Commonwealth Games programme, but walking will return in Australia come 2018. This major function will in some way offset the profound disappointment caused by our 2014 exclusion. A tribute booklet with biographical details of those 61 is being considered, similar to that much sought after (and now sold out) Olympians' Booklet. The luncheon will be held at The Tower Thistle Hotel, London E1 overlooking the River Thames and the Tower of London. It has a car park and is within sight of 3 railway / tube stations (Fenchurch Street/Tower Hill/Tower Gateway). It will be a carvery style luncheon in a room that has a capacity to sit 140. The lunch time function provides an opportunity to attend by cheap-day return without the need for an overnight stop. We hope that as many of you will attend for what promises to be a truly memorable occasion. The cost is only £35.00 and tickets are available from - Pam Ficken, Owl Cottage,101 Meldreth Road, Whaddon, Royston, SG8 5RS Cheques should be made out to the Race Walking Association. For further information please contact Peter Marlow 01284 754177. Lunch 12.30.
