Fall/Winter 2012-13 Programming Guide - 9 - www.redwoodareacommunitycenter.com

ObjectiveThe overall objective of the SilverSneakers FunctionalFitness Assessment initiative is to provide a safe andeffective variety of functional fitness tests specificallydesigned for our SilverSneakers members. These testsprovide information and feedback to participants on activ-ities for daily living (ADL) functions through recognizedhealth and skill-related fitness components: body compo-sition, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength andendurance, flexibility, speed, power, agility, balance andcoordination.

GoalsThe overall goal of the initiative is to offer members theopportunity to measure their physical skills and abilitiesrelative to other older adults, measure improvement whileparticipating in the SilverSneakers Fitness Program andoffer a fun and motivating activity to increase retentionand participation in a group exercise setting. TheSilverSneakers Functional Fitness Assessment providesan overall “snapshot” of a participant’s functional fitnessas compared to data compiled by the LifeSpan projectdeveloped by Dr. Roberta Rikli and Dr. Jessie Jones ofCalifornia State University, Fullerton. The 6-Minute Walk,Scratch Test, Biceps Arm Curl, Chair Stand, Body MassIndex, Functional Reach and 8-Foot Up and Go protocolshave been redesigned to offer safe, reliable and valid fit-ness test measurements in a comfortable, non-intimidat-ing group setting. The initial assessment will serve as thebenchmark for improvements. Subsequent assessmentswithin eight to 12 weeks offer members comparative infor-mation. Test measurements, normative data and fitnessinformation will be available for all members.

CriteriaAll assessment participants must follow SilverSneakersFitness Program guidelines for physician clearance spe-cific to the assessment and sign a physical activity waiv-er form prior to testing. The Functional FitnessAssessment can be administered once or many timesthroughout the year. Time between the tests offers mem-bers the opportunity to make an impact on physiologicalchanges for health, and skill-related fitness components.

FUNCTIONALFITNESS ASSESSMENTThe following tests are recommended for partici-pants in the SilverSneakers Functional FitnessAssessment. Instructions for administering eachtest follow.

6-MINUTE WALK - Cardiovascular enduranceWalk (not run or jog) along a safe, predeterminedcourse and cover as much distance as possible insix minutes.

SCRATCH TEST - FlexibilityAssess the range of movement in the shoulder jointby reaching one hand over a shoulder and theother hand behind the back, attempting to “touch”the middle fingers on both hands.

BICEPS ARM CURLUpper-body muscular strength and endurancePerform as many biceps arm curls in 30 secondsas possible.

CHAIR STANDLower-body muscular strength and enduranceStand from a seated position and return to a seat-ed position as many times as possible in 30 sec-onds.

FUNCTIONAL REACH - Dynamic balanceReach as far forward as possible without taking aforward step.

BODY MASS INDEX - Waist-to-hip ratioMeasure the relationship between weight andheight relative to standards developed for overallideal body weight.

8-FOOT UP AND GO - Agility and coordinationFrom a seated position in a chair, get up, walkaround a cone (in a figure eight pattern) and returnto the chair in the least amount of time.
