Rabbi's Message A s you may know, a

group of 41 men, women a nd children recently returned from our 4th family tour of Israel, with a side trip to Jordan. In a word it was wonderful! (and also intensive, emotional, inspirational and so much fun.)

In Israel, I heard about a man who visited Israel for the first time. At the Western Wall, he observed a group of Jews saying their prayers. One of the daveners came over and offered the man a set of tefillin. He said, "No, thank you; I don't know how to use them." So the man said - "I will give you a tallis; all you have to do is put it over you r shoulders. " He said, "No , thank you; I really am not interested. " The man then offered him a siddur so he could follow the service. The visitor finally said - "You don ' t understand; I am only a tourist". We may la ugh a t this story, but so many of us are travel-

ling tourist class through Judaism, mere spectators to the world of our tradition. That is why our Temple , through our newly created and dyn amic Festival Celebration Committee (a.k.a. F.c.c.) will be helping us to bring the magic of Judaism back into our

homes and hearts and minds. This adventure begins with Sukkot as a menu of o pportunity will be offered to every member. It is never too late to begin to truly enjoy Judaism.

As Reform Jews we also need to become informed Jews. We have a responsibility to know, to study, to choose, and yes, to do.

Let us find time in the New Year 5757, no, let us make time in the New Year to upgrade our ticket from tourist class to first class in terms of our involvement and commitment, devotion and love of the rich heritage which is ours.

Tashlikh Services to be held at Croft Farm Bridge (Saturday, September 14 at 11:45 a.m.)

Join us for Tashlikh Services on Rosh Hashanah Day, September 14, at 11:45 a.m. follOWing the Early Service. Tashlikh is a communal ritual of casting out sin to begin the period of repentance. On the afternoon of Rosh Hashanah Day it is customary to go to a flowing body of water and symbolically cast away our sins by throwing bread crumbs into the water. The Tashlikh Service is brief and kids seem to love apologizing for their sins as they feed the ducks. The Croft Farm Bridge is located at the end of Borton Mill Road on the west side of Brace Road. (Please do not leave your car in the Temple parking lot). _

Selichot Service The official observance of the High Holy Days begins with the service of

preparation known as SELICHOT. The Hebrew word means to pardon or ask forgiveness. Thus, this night of worship which begins in the late hours of the Saturday night preceding Rosh Hashanah, is filled with penitential prayers. Its late hour forces us to concentrate totally on personal reflection and apology during the quiet of the night. Our SELICHOT SERVICE, beginning with refreshments, will be held on Saturday night, September 7, at 10:00 p.m. _

Or. Mark Sobel

On behalf of our Temple family, I extend warmest wishes for a healthy and sweet Shana Tova.

The New Year 5757 will be filled with activities for every segment of our Congregation. Most noteworthy are the programs prepared for our families with children. Activities abound in our Religious School and Youth Group. In fact, there are so many participants in Youth Group that the children are subgrouped by 2 year intervals. There are numerous trips and activities attractive to our young people. ,

We encourage families to attend Shabbat evening services. The first Friday evening of every month begins with Tot Shabbat. This is a wonderful 25 minute experience for those with infants and toddlers . Giggling, calling out, crying and commotion is a part of the action! This is followed at 7:30 p.m. by our monthly Family Service, which starts one half hour earlier than usual in order to accommodate our younger congregants ' bedtimes.

For those children who prefer not to accompany parents for worship, free babysitting is avai lable every Shabbat evening.

Numerous special holiday services are geared toward children as well. Children and Adults eat apples and candy and decorate our Sukkah together for Sukkot. In fa ct , our Festival Celebration Committee has organized a number of activities for the week of Sukkot, all geared for families and children. The Purim Megillah Reading is always a happening with groggers, cheering and jeering from all of our children who come in costume to celebrate the festival of Purim.

Only during the High Holy Day Services do we seek to preserve ~he quiet reverence and sanctity of formal worship. During Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur we ask that our younger children participate in alternate programming. The Holiday Enrichment Program , managed by our older Youth Group members and under the direction of Sandy Umansky and Alan Caro, has been an overwhelming success. The children are offered age

appropriate actiVIties, and enjoy a youth-oriented alternative service.

The Board of Trustees has met with a group of congregants, most of whom have children, and our policy for High Holy Days has been modified:

CD 4th Graders (9 year olds) are the youngest children permitted into the main sanctuary. This is lowered from age 10 in prior years.

@ Children in grades Kindergarten through third are offered the High Holy Day Enrichment Program.

@ We now offer babysitting for 3 and 4 year olds, during morning services of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur -early service only. This is available to those who make prior arrangements with the Temple office.

® We will allow families with infants, who cannot make other arrangements, to pray together in the Chapel, where there will be video transmission of the service.

® We introduce babysitting on Yom Kippur afternoon from 3:00-5:30 p.m. for Kindergarten through 3rd grade.

® Rosh Hashanah afternoon service at 3:15 p.m. continues to be a Family Service. We welcome children of all ages.

This High Holy Day season we ask you to please remember that our ushers are fellow congregants. They are volunteers who accept the responsibility of assisting you. They are asked to uphold our poliCies without exception. Please do not challenge their good nature, especially since they wish to pleasantly enjoy our High Holy Day services with you.

Together may we share in the beauty and dignity of our Holy Days while we enjoy the company and warmth of our Temple family . •

L'Shanah Tovah We extend to all the members of

our Temple Emanuel family and their loved ones our warmest best wishes for the New Year 5757. Our families join us in the hope that the coming year will be one of health, happiness, fulfillment and peace.

Celebration Committee

The Festival Celebration Committee (FCC) is a new committee that has been exploring ways to enrich the holiday experience here at Temple Emanuel. O ur committee membership has been drawn from a wide array of members (seniors, singles, youths , o ld members, new members, Men's Club, Sisterhood, etc.). We have come up with what we think is an exciting variety of activities to make this year's Sukkot celebration an exciting and enriching experience for everyone. We want Temple Emanuel to be your "home away from home" for the holiday and, to that end, we have tried to include something for everyone. More details will be coming your way via a special FCC newsletter, bu t some of the highlights for this year's holiday celebration are: A Sukkah de corating p arty on Wednesday , September 25th, that includes a Sukkah bu ilding workshop where you can buy your very own pre-fab Sukkah! (Members from the Men's Club are even willing to come to your house to help you assemble your kit!), a Friday Night Community Dinner, Sukkot Services in the Sukkah, a picnic lunch, hayrides , crafts and mitzvah projects! And, if that isn't enough to keep you busy ... we even are sponsoring a Congregational Family Sleepover on Saturday night for those hardy souls who crave adventure (and have a sense of humor!). We are looking forward to having as many people as possible join us for what we think is going to be the beginning of an incredible year full of exciting celebrations. Look out - Sukkot is coming! •

Stars of David A new local chapter of STARS OF

DAVID, the Delaware Valley Chapter, has recently formed in this area. This Jewish adoptive families ' group held several successful events, including a family picn ic in J une at the JCC Camps at Medford, as well as a Purim party at Temple Emanuel, p rior to affiliating with the national organization. The Delaware Valley Chapter is planning a number of exciting events for the upcoming year, including holiday celebrations, a bowling party and a roller skating party, as well as informational meetings and panel discussions for parents.

Stars of David International is the national nonprofit information/ support network for Jewish and interfaith adoptive and prospective families of all ages and origins. While Stars of David, a grassroots organization with chapters across the U. S. and abroad, is not an adoption agency , both adoptive and prospective parents have opportunities to network and learn more about adoption options and resources.

The Henry Raich Senior Group

Brown Bag Lunch and Book Rev iew planned for Wednesday, September 18. at 12 Noon

When the long-awaited call came from CBS in New York, Edward R. Murrow and William Shirer set out to cover the war as no one else had . . .In less than e ight hours , these brash journalists had assembled the first radio "ro undup " reporting Hitler 's invasion of Austria. It was a newscast that would dramatically change the course of broadcast journalism. THE MURROW BOYS by Stanley Cloud and Lynne Olson is the first book to tell the story of these talented and spirited correspondents who under Murrow's direction formed CBS's pioneering World War II team.

Join the Henry Raich Senior Group on Wednesday afternoon, September 18, at 12 Noon and hear May FisherCohen review this very interesting book. Bring your lunch and we will supply refreshments and cookies. Please R.S .v.P. to the Temple Office at 489-0029 .•

I had the privilege of attending a Social Action Skills Workshop sponsored by the Religious Action Center in Washington D.C. in July. There were many dedicated and caring people in attendance from all over the United States. There are many social action projects that our synagogue can take part in, and I will be sharing them with you shortly. Don't forget our on-going projects - Casserole Cooking will be held on Tuesday night, Sept. 17, at 7:00 p .m. in our kitchen. Over 30 casseroles are assembled and distributed to the Neighborhood Center in Camden. Just bring a knife for cutting vegetables and an apron, and we'll show you what you need to do to perform this most worthwhile Mitzvot.

We will have our annual Yom Kippur Food Drive on Yom Kippur day. Foods collected will go to Jewish Family and Children's Services as well as the South Jersey Food Bank. Our area supermarkets sometimes give items for free with a minimum purchase - please share these purchases with the needy in ou r community. Help keep our food baskets located near the ReligiOUS School entrance full. Drop off non-perishable food items and canned goods in our baskets each time you come to the Temple.

I can be reached at 424-2238 if you have any questions or suggestions for social action project. •

It's not easy to come from a mixed family, My sister and I, that is, We are both expatriate Northeast Philadelphians. Not quite up there with the toppled Romanovs, but we Bustletonians are a proud lot. Whereas I took the eastern route over the Tacony Palmyra Bridge to South Jersey, she drove her Chevette wagon train westward-ho to s unny .Los Angeles , thereby offering up a rare glimpse of how the other half lives.

Now we all watch TV ati"d know Californians don't eat lunch, they do lunch. They don't have a meeting, they take a meeting. They don't see eye-to-eye , they "can get behind that. " And, living in a land of underground parking garages at your local shul, where you 're as likely to be sitting in the Don Rickles Gymnasium as the Streisand Hillel Center or Milken JCC, there has to be a unique slant to the Jewish holidays as well.

Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and their components are pretty much any synagogue 's version of the Oscars. Religion aside (not that we don 't all have those priorities in order), it is a combination social reunion and fashion show that often accompanies the religious aspect. Temple Emanuel is , even by South Jersey standards , pretty low key . And, compared to some of its West Coast counterparts, downright "Woodstockian. "

At Temple Emanuel, you choose early or late services. You a rrive early, park your car on the main lot guided by the artistry of our volunteer parking lot attendants. Imagine my surprise several years ago when my husband shared his realization, "You know the head car parker .,. he's really a dentist." Hey, I thought these guys were paid professionals . Don't make it in time for the main lot? Just hop on the yellow school bus for the ride to the auxiliary lot at the high school.

Nothing quite so plebeian on the left coast. High holidays, let's see, there's services for 1800 held at the Century Plaza Ballroom. One can only wonder if the student program is held on the concierge floor. For those with not quite so large a congregation, such as the Steven S. Wise Temple, known best by its other moniker "The Shul With A Pool",

there are no dentists , lawyers or CPA's masquerading as car attendants . No, it's the real thing - valet parking. Once again, bringing up even more religiOUS pondering. Is it okay to tip on Rosh Hashana, but not Yom Kippur, or neither? Where is Talmudic wisdom when you need it?

Admit it - you often sit down in the sanctuary and begin the standard pre-service tradition - checking out the crowd. We may have some local, even regional luminaries. But how can they compare with 1. A. shulgoers Steve and Eydie , Stiller and Meara, and in their respective sanctuaries, Streisand and Gould.

Tashlick, a lovely Rosh Hashana ritual whereby you traditionally visit a body of water to cast away your sins (errant children don't count here). Temple Emanuel folks head over to the Cooper River for some grol;l p prayers and song. Meanwhile, their West Coast counterparts are in Malibu casting away their sins, one presumes under the protective gaze of the Baywatch team.

While we wouldn't be so pre sumptuous as to share those gleaned glimpses into the world of the Hollywood bar mitzvah, we do know that my sister and Billy Crystal share a caterer. And, while we can confirm he had carving stations , at his son's bar mitzvah , we 're not clear on whether or not Bananas Foster was one of them. As for themes, suffice it to say ten foot tall evergreens with twinkly lights have been known to make an unintentionally cross-cultural appearance.

Oh yes, there is a bit of delicious irony her. After 15 years of being considered quaint and somewhat archaic in my decidedly East Coast approach to religious traditions, I suppose I could say, "There is a higher being, one with a sense of humor to boot. " My sister and brother-inlaw have been transferred - to Philadelphia. I guess they'll be parking their own cars on the High Holidays from now on . •

Israel Program Betsy Karpf, Chairperson

The Gift of Israel Program is an excellent opportunity to send your child(ren) to Israel at a fraction of the cost! This innovative program is open to all children of our Temple and beginning in the 3rd grade parents may enroll their child(ren). The Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey provides $100 a year for a maximum of seven years to families who also contribute matching funds and whose children continue their Jewish education through Confirmation. Each family is required to contribute a minimum of $150 the first year per child and then our Temple and the family are to contribute $200 combined every year thereafter. Children who enroll in 4th - 6th grades receive Federation and Temple funding only for the years they are enrolled.

Meetings will be held this fall to provide information, applications and answer questions about the Gift of Israel Program. The enrollment period for this year will close by the end of December so it is imperative that you sign up your child(ren) by then or jeopardize receipt of matching funds from Federation and the Temple.

For those families who enrolled their child(ren) last year in the Gift of Israel Program, please remember to make your minimum $100 contribution by mid-December in order to qualify and receive matching funds from Federation and Temple Emanuel.

Temple Emanuel 's Board of Trustees strongly endorses this program because it believes that the Israel experience reinforces your child(ren)'s Jewish education. Last year our Temple had the largest enrollment in the Gift of Israel program of any synagogue in the tricounty area. We hope all of our members with children will take advantage of this exciting program.

Please look for flyers about upcoming meetings about the Gift of Israel Program which will be sent home with your child(ren) via the ReligiOUS School this fall. •

YOUTH GROUP

By Sandy Umansky, Youth Group Advisor

New beginnings are always very special; this New Year's beginning is especially so. The youth at Temple Emanuel have unlimited opportunities to experience their Judaism throughout the year. It is now, before the High Holidays, that they can make a commitment to themselves to become involved in many ways. Youth Group for every age is available and everyone is anxious to share the excitement.

TWEEN CANTEEN for all fifth and sixth graders focuses on the fun of being together and doing awesome monthly activities. This year 's TWEEN CANTEENERS can look forward to laser tag , hayrides, movie night, Hanukkah parties, Malibu and other exciting events.

SHOMRIM, our seventh and eighth grade Junior Youth Group , also stresses social events each month, but introduces our teens to social action projects and ideas. And TEYIY, open to all high schoolers, encompasses monthly events and trips, such as touring Baltimore's Inner Harbor and skiing in the Poconos. TEFTYITES help our community and our Jewish world. With participation in projects such as Habitat for Humanity and Caring Hearts Ministry, our own Jewish Geriatric Home and our synagogue itself, teens see first hand the need to help and the effect of caring. TEYIY is part of a very active region of Youth Groups. NFTY / PAR, the Pennsylvania Region of Reform Youth Group movement, with five conventions throughout the year and invitations to many monthly activities, high schoolers can always find an outlet to learn and enjoy.

We here at Temple Emanuel hope that you will all try to participate in the Youth Group just geared for you. We can't stress enough how much it can do for you and for us too. We hope to see you in the very near future - look for our flyers real soon!

B'shalom (and a joyous New Year).

MEN'S CLUB

By Carl Grossberg, President

A new year begins as a fine time for the Men's Club to usher in some great new programs and welcome back some of the old favorites . We've been meeting formally and informally throughout the summer to come up with an agenda aimed at tempting you to take a new look at the Men's Club and provide that extra push to get involved, either from time-to-time or on a regular basis. Besides, we don't need much urging to get together, talk and eat cake.

On the agenda this year is a return of some popular events, including the Golf Outing, Sports Breakfast, Ski Trip , Family Bowling Night and Roller-skating. In the planning stages are a Job or Career Fair, community outreach, a new and different Major Fund-raiser and a social event. Watch your mail for details about the Family Bowling Night, set for Sunday, October 6th, or call Alan Schorr at 429-0219 for more information.

In a less formal vein, we intend to provide a casual drop-in and shmooz area on Sunday mornings during religious school. Coffee, bagels and lox (and, of course, cake) and people to hang out with. Some of the best laid organizational plans come from an informal setting and that's pretty much what we hope to provide.

Joining me on the Board this year are;

Ed Cogan 751-8706 Alan Schorr 429-0219 General Vice Presidents

Scott Jeffreys 751-5119 Membership

Steve Lubetkin 751-6146 Secretary

Murray Fineman 667-9763 Treasurer

Please feel free to call me or any of our officers with your ideas and/ or questions. To make this quantum leap forward the Men's Club needs your participation.

From the Men's Club and from my family and me , best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year . •

by Robin Cogan, Sisterhood President

Sisterhood wishes our Temple family a happy and healthy New Year. This year promises to bring special programming, educational opportunities, social events and a Tikkun Olam Expo (Repairing the Worlds). We are very excited to announce our Second Annual Kol Haesha-The Voice of Women Retreat to take place the end of May, 1997.

Look for information on Sisterhood's Paid Up Membership Brunch. This is our first meeting of the year and it will be a wonderful Sunday, filled with music, friends and terrific food . Save the date for Sunday, October 20, 1996. Our membership is growing by leaps and bounds.

New things to look for in Sisterhood - our first Directory -"Can We Talk?" is going to the presses in the next several weeks. We felt the need to provide our members with a phone listing, please indicate your agreement to be part of the Directory on the check off included in your billing. The Sisterhood Newsletter will be making its appearance in the coming weeks. . .look for it in the mail.

Sisterhood is continuing to offer a new way to celebrate a birthday, simcha or remember a loved one through the Women of Temple Emanuel Sisterhood Fund. Gertrude Pastelnick is our coordinator for this project.

Debbie Jeffreys continues to be our Scrip coordinator. Please think of Scrip as a year round committment. We offer these gift certificates for many of the area Supermarkets. It is an easy way to support our Temple programs without costing our members any out of pocket money. 5% of your purchase goes back to Sisterhood so we can use the funds for our many projects. The 5% is provided by the Supermarket, and it is no cost to you.

Much interest has been expressed in continuing the Rosh Hodesh Group. Look for details and dates to come . We are also beginning

• TEMPLE EMANUEL NEWSLETIER

a Book Review Group and will provide more information about that in the future .

Sisterhood is teaming up with Men's Club to present a Casino Night . We encourage all of our members to support their spouses or Significant others to become active in Men's Club; it is a terrific branch of the Temple family.

We pray for a safe and happy New Year and look forward to sharing time together in this coming year . •

Support Sisterhood by Purchasing Entertainment BooksAvailable Soon

Snowbirds can order books for their winter locations at a reduced price using the coupon in the book you get here. Entertainment Books make perfect gifts - Remember - it's the gift that keeps on giving! •

PROMISES BelvaPiain

Margaret and Adam Crane seem to have a near perfect life - she's a teacher, he's a computer executive. Together they are lovingly raising their own children and Margaret's orphaned niece. Then one day the phone rings and everything changes forever as a woman from Adam's past reappears and an old affair reignites.

FALLING UP Shel Silverstein

Poor Screamin' Millie is just one of the unforgettable characters in this new book of poems and drawings by the creator of "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and "A Light in the Attic. " Here you will meet Allison Beals and her 25 Eels, Reachin' Richard, the clothes dryin' moose, the ill-fated Headphone Harry and many more great characters.

Lll..YWHITE Susan Isaacs

Lily White, better known as Lee, is a criminal lawyer from Long Island. Her current client is a con man who charms women out of their assets . Normally non-violent, he is accused of murdering his most recent mark. Complications arise when his beautiful young accomplice confesses to the murder. Lee's client, who has protested his innocence, suddenly insists on taking the rap, and Lee fmds herself in the middle of a mystery - or perhaps another con - as she sorts out the truth.

a r Temple Funds provide a beautiful way in which you may remember someone special and at the same time help to maintain several worthwhile synagogue projects. Acknowledgement of your contribution is made in our monthly bulletin. The family of the deceased, or the individual being honored, is notified by the Temple of your generosity.

So many of our families find that in times of joy as in times of sorrow, this is an appropriate means of sharing with others.

Deadline for insertion in The Light is the first day of the previous month. Minimum contribution is '5.

Rabbi's Good Works Fund: The Rabbi has a special fund to use, at his discretion, for members and others who may need assistance, as well as for the support of wonhy charitable and cultural activities.

Scbolarsbip Fund: From this fund, support is given to members, members' children, and to our Religious School faculty to further their Jewish Education.

Prayer Book Fund: New prayer books for Sabbath and Festival worship are purchased by contributions to the Prayer Book Fund. If you want an inscribed plate, the minimum contribution is $10.00.

Library Fund: Our Library attempts to stock a wide variety of books of Jewish interest, both popular and scholarly. Your contribution enables us to purchase additional books.

Torab Futul .. Contributions to the Torah Fund are used for the maintenance of our Torah Scrolls and their ornaments and for the purchase of additional Torah Scrolls.

Building Futul: Donations to this fund made above the member's minimum pledge are used for the general upkeep of our facility.

Museum-Art Fund: Donations to this fund go to the many Art/Museum pieces that beautify the inside of our Temple.

Janice Israel Fund: This fund was set up by Susan Israel for the beautiful windows in the Sanctuary in our old building. It is currenrly being used for our Soviet Resettlement program.

Hess-Geall Fund: This fund was set up by Eleanor and Frank Hess. Donations are used for equipment to be used for the handicapped and signing of services.

DormtUl-Ratcb Futul: This fund has been set up by the Dorrnan-Raich family to enhance our adult education programming.
