RABBINIC REFLECTIONS

L ast month was an immeasurably emotional time for Americans. We commemorated the one year anniversary of one of the most tragic events in American history-the destruction of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and the attack upon the Pentagon. The media, from newspapers to newsmagazines to television, focused almost exclusively on trying to evaluate not only the dreadful events of September 11th, 200 I, but also the repercussions of those events in the ensuing year.

One byproduct of 9/ II is a new appreciation for history. Over the past decades, one of the major criticisms of Americans was that they do not have a historical consciousness. Because so many Americans are either first, second or third generation Americans it was bebeved they do not hold the same understanding or grasp of historical events as other peoples throughout the world.

In this country, history is not as valued as it is in England, France, and Germany or even in the Mideast or Asian nations. It has been assumed that other nations put a greater emphasis on historical knowledge than the United States. Our school aged children consistently do poorer on social studies exams than their counterparts throughout the globe.

One of the reasons given for this discrepancy is that so much of the world's hjstory is inundated with wars, battles and hardships that lend themselves more to rustorical review and emotional ties. For example, most Russians can document not only the events of World War One and Two but even go further back into the struggles of czars. England and France share a checkered history covering over 1000 years of struggles, revolutions and

royal family intrigue. In America past struggles are not as embedded in rustorical memory. As compared to other years, it is only relatively recently that the events of World Wars One and Two have been popularized in books, movies and television specials. For the most part Americans do not have the same sensitivity or proclivity towards the rehearsing of historical events as other peoples throughout the world.

We know that to some degree our emotional detachment from rustory has helped us forge new relationsmps with countries that we once were at war with such as Germany and Japan. We do not seem to harbor deep grudges or animosities as the European countries that once fought each other have towards one another. Even today France and England have a rivalry dating back to all the wars that they fought against each other. Even Germany is still looked askance by many of the other European countries. In America we tend to let bygones be bygones. History does not weigh us down. We have a very short memory.

Yet for many reasons September the II th will be a historical recollection that will be fixed upon the consciousness of this nation more so than even dates markjng our independence from England or even the Civil War. Most Americans will be amateur mstorians when it comes to September 11th.

One of the major reasons for trus was our country was violated. You could say the same happened during Pearl Harbor but even that was different because it was a prelude to wartime. The destruction and devastation that occurred on September II th happened during peacetime and prosperity. And furthermore, on September 11 th the target was a civilian target -a financial center.

':'*":"" RABBINIC REFLECTIONS CONTINUED " " '._

After reviewing the multitude of programs on television, the hundreds of articles contained in newsmagazines and newspapers and seeing so many book titles devoted to September the II th, we can come to the conclusion that Americans, at least for this particular date, have attained a historical awareness that is equal to that of the rest of the world, Americans discovered the importance of history on September 11th.

A number of generations of American schoolchildren will not have to think or ponder when a question appears on an examination asking them to identify September II th. This day has become a day that transcends mere space and time, It has become a watershed date for espousing American ideals and beliefs,

 '" ». 4>""'';. • ,:i

We were not attacked because we attacked another nation, but rather we were attacked for our core beliefs, We were attacked not because of what we do but more importantly because of what we are. We were attacked for believing that everyone should share in the prosperity of a nationnot just a few.

For when we study the countries represented by those who perpetrated this evil act against us we come to the realization that the governments of these nations are not only dictatorial but perpetrate savagery towards their own citizenry. In the name of religion those who committed this crime and those of their fellow countrymen who supported it made a telling statement against the goodness of our nation that is free.

In our nation religion is seen as a positive force in bringing people together. Religion is that which motivates us towards wanting everyone to have an equal share or at least to have an equal opportunity to share in the prosperity of our nation. This is an alien, foreign and repulsive idea to those who committed this crime on September II th and those who sympathize with them throughout our world.

We look back at the events that transpired on 9111 knowing that Americans have attained, in the most brutal of manner, a historical consciousness. We now understand deeply the meaning of history as its shapes our future.

ADULT PROGRAM AND LEARNING _

EACH FRIDAY MORNING IN OCTOBER

SHABBAT SERVICES AT GREENWOOD HOUSE

Join Rabbi and/or Cantor every Friday from 10:30 to 11 :00 AM at Greenwood House for a Shabbat Service with the residents. This brief service is meaningful to the residents, many of whom are still members of our congregation. They enjoy even a brief visit with other members of our congregation.

LUNCH AND LEARN

Tuesdays at 12 noon (Beginning October 1st) This year Rabbi Pollack will be introducing one of the greatest works of ethical literature, "Pirke Avot: A Modern Commentary On Jewish Ethics" by W. Gunther Plaut. This small volume nestled in the legal literature of the Talmud comprises a world of Jewish thought and practical wisdom taken from the teachings of the ancient rabbis. It is a masterpiece of common sense which is a window to a profound understanding of Judaism. It not only has been one of the most influential volumes in the Jewish tradition it has, throughout the millennia, had a singular impact on Christian and Islamic morals and ethics. The class will be introduced to many of the classic commentaries on this most precious volume of useful knowledge. FEE: $12.00

HOME STUDY GROUP

Wednesday, October 9th 8:00 PM

This year the Home Study series will concentrate on the modem masters of Jewish thought. This will be a journey into the minds of the greatest Jewish philosophers of our time; i.e., Martin Buber, Abraham Heschel, Mordeci Kaplan, and more. We will explore such questions as: Can we have faith after the Holocaust? What is Reconstructionist Judaism? What is a modern Jewish view of the afterlife? How do we define Judaism in the modern world? W hat does it mean to be Jewish? These questions and many more will be considered in a seminar style. The Home Study has been a staple of Har Sinai for close to forty years and proves to be one of the most enduring adult education experiences in Temple life. We meet at congregants' homes once a month in an informal relaxed manner which facilities both learning and fun. In October, we will meet at the home of Rita Allen in Yardley. To RSVP or to ask for directions, please call Rita at 215-295-0115. (No fee)

PARALLEL HEBREW SCHOOL

October 6th and 20th at 9:00 AM The Rabbi will be teaching beginning prayer book Hebrew to any interested congregants. The goal of the lessons will be to have the adult student read Hebrew in a matter of a month. This is for students who have either little or no background in the reading of Hebrew. Registration is a must. Please contact the office! (No fee)

PARALLEL SUNDAY SCHOOL

October 13th and 27th at 9:00 AM This year parallel study program will focus on the incredible book of Genesis. We will be using as a text the recently published work "The Beginnings of Desire" by Aviva Zornberg. This will be an extremely important course on one of the famous works of civilization. Registration is a must please contact the office! (Fee: $15)

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL REPORTS by Magda Reyes, Director of Education

As I write this, religious school has started, the high Holidays are over and the Jewish mother in me is very happy. As an educator, and a Jewish mother, the sight of smiling children engrossed in Jewish studies makes me proud and validates the feeling that what we, parents and educators do here, is important.

My eighteen-year-old son called from college a few weeks ago, asking what he should do about the High Holidays. Since there are no facilities for Jewish worship on campus, he said he spoke to the chaplains on site and was referred to the two synagogues in town. He said he did not have much luck in connecting with them and he needed help. I was surprised. First, because this is the same child that argued and gave me every reason he could think of not to go to Confirmation classes (according to him becoming a Bar Mitzvah was enough). Second, because I doubted that any Jewish institution would not jump at the chance of welcoming anyone interested enough to call. So being the Jewish mother, I made some phone calls and ended up on a first name basis and best friends with the administrator of a small congregation in town who was not only happy to have him attend services but would arrange for transportation to and from and introduce him to some of the older congregants who were graduates of the same school. The rest was up to him.

The phone call after the holidays was even more surprising. He said he made me proud. Not only did he go to services, he thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. He was made to feel welcome and at home in a strange place. He enjoyed meeting the older congregants who shared their stories with them. And he found something familiar and comforting about the liturgy that he was brought up with. I could not be happier.

What higher goal in Jewish education can we set for ourselves than to give our children the foundation that they can lean on and that will comfort them and carry them through life's struggles? We, as parents and teachers, know that our Judaism is a precious gift that needs to be taught and nurtured in our children. As we start this new school year, I invite everyone to participate in Jewish education, whether by helping the children with their Hebrew homework, participating in class activities, attending services or discussing and practicing some of the Jewish lifecycle events the children learn about in school. Together we will work to bring the best Jewish education to our children and raise confident and responsible adults who will make our Jewish hearts proud.
