RABBI HILLEL SKOLNIK’S MESSAGEDear SOJC,
The other day I received a surprise package in the mail. It was a gift from
Sharon…a t-shirt that read “Rabbis love Cheshvan” (the Hebrew month that immediately follows the Hebrew month of Tishrei). I started to laugh out loud because rabbis,
including both Sharon and me, do indeed love Cheshvan. After the excitement and craziness of Tishrei, the busiest month of the Jewish calendar year, there is a calm and
peacefulness to Cheshvan. Having made it through another season of the High Holidays
and then Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, all of which occur in Tishrei, it is nice to have a month where a “normal” schedule can resume.
But even as we return to a regular schedule, don’t let that fool you into thinking that there isn’t still a tremendous amount of excitement here at SOJC. Our Religious
School is in full swing, especially now that we have a few weeks of meeting both on
Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. Our adult education semester is well under way, though it’s not too late to join in. We have “Hebrew for Beginners” with Rich
Waldor, “Knosh and Knowledge” and “Time for text” with me, “As the Torah Turns” with Mary Roufa, and “Talkin’ Torah in Tennis Shoes; Women’s Torah Study” with
Rabbi Sharon. Our youth groups – USY, Kadima and Chalutzim – are all getting
together for fun and engaging activities And let’s not forget that on Friday night, November 16th, we have our annual pre-Thanksgiving Family Friday night dinner,
preceded directly by Tot Shabbat. So don’t be a turkey and make sure to join us for that delicious evening.
Of course this particular November is hardly a “normal” one. We are,
thankfully, at the end of a long election cycle that will result in the selection of the President of our country for the next four years. It is a contentious election which is still
too close to call. Our motto here at SOJC has been, and will continue to be, to encourage all of our eligible members to vote on Election day, but to make sure that our holy community does not become a breeding ground for political debate. Our relationships
with each other are too precious to allow our differing political opinions to come between us. In the end, one candidate will win
and one candidate will lose, but either way, SOJC will still be here. I look forward to seeing you all at our wonderful events and wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving.
Sincerely,Rabbi Hillel Skolnik

HURRICANE SANDYFrom the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism
Though Hurricane Sandy ended on Tuesday, it has left a trail of devastation along much of the East Coast. Millions of people remain without power; homes are underwater or destroyed; and tragically, many lives have been lost.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those suffering continued hardship in the wake of this disaster, and our hearts go out to those who’ve lost loved ones.
As individuals and communities start to rebuild, people across North America are asking what they can do to help.We at United Synagogue have been reaching out to our kehillot to assess the extent of the damage, both to synagogue buildings and
the communities they serve, and we will continue to do so over the coming days and weeks. We have been coordinating this effort with our
colleagues at the Rabbinical Assembly. If you are in the storm zone, please contact your Kehilla Relationship Manager. Let them know how you are doing. Contacts for all districts are here. You can also check in on the USCJ Facebook page at facebook.com/UnitedSynagogueCJ
Already we’ve heard numerous reports of storm damage to synagogue buildings flooding and lost power are not uncommon -- but also of members and leaders making heroic efforts to keep their kehillot functioning and rush to the aid of those who need help. There continue to be inspiring acts of chesed and tzedakah on the part of so many of our kehillot.
On Long Island, where a million people are without power, Congregation Tifereth Israel invited the community to the cantor’s house
for a barbeque; went door to door checking on elderly members; and is making plans this weekend for a “flashlight bar mitzvah.”In Westchester County, also facing extensive power outages, Beth El Synagogue Center has invited people to “come in from the dark”
for shmoozing, charging cell phones, minyan, and a pizza dinner.
Across the region, kehillot not adversely affected are offering to host b’nai mitzvah celebrations and Shabbat services that would have been postponed or cancelled due to storm damage, while kehillot thousands of miles from the storm zone are collecting funds to help those in need.
This kind of outreach, in which we look beyond the walls of our buildings to care for those around us, is what transforms a congregation into a kehilla, a sacred community.
What You Can Do To HelpRight now, we encourage you to donate to the many reputable organizations collecting funds for disaster relief. You can also donate to
USCJ's disaster relief fund. If you’d like to speak to us about more ways you can help, please contact Jonathan Boiskin, our Chief Development Officer at [email protected].
Please bear in mind that the best way to be of help at this point in the recovery is to donate funds rather than physical goods. We pray that life soon returns to as close to normal as possible in the storm zone.

QUESTION
Dear Rabbi, I know that our Friday night services always start at 7:30 PM, so does that mean that Shabbat always starts then?
ANSWER
Thanks so much for you question. Actually, the time that Shabbat starts varies from week to week. Shabbat and other Jewish holidays like Passover, Shavuot, Sukkot, Rosh HaShannah and Yom Kippur, all begin 18 minutes before sundown. It is at this time, 18 minutes before sundown, that we should be lighting candles. So, for example, if sundown were at 7:18 pm, then candle lighting would be at 7 pm and Shabbat would start at 7. If sundown were at 5:30 pm, then candle lighting would be at 5:12 and Shabbat would start at 5:12. Since the time that Shabbat begins varies from week to week, so does the time that Shabbat ends. It ends an hour later than candle lighting, making Shabbat always 25 hours long. Back to our examples, when sundown is at 7:18 pm and Shabbat begins with candle lighting at 7, then Shabbat is over the following evening at 8 pm. If sundown were at 5:30 pm with candle lighting at 5:12, then Shabbat would end the following evening at 6:12 pm. If there's ever a question of what time Shabbat begins and ends, you can always consult our calendar at www.sojc.org/calendar.

EDUCATION STATION Last month we had a wonderful time with Pizza in the Hut, when every student, teaching assistant, and teacher performed the mitzvot of shaking the lulav and etrog in the six directions and dwelling in the Sukkah for a meal of yummy pizza. Smiling faces and happy sounds emanated from the Sukkah all morning! The weather cooperated and the
decorations were colorful! The classes were very proud of their artwork. Thank you so much to Robert Moszenberg and our wonderful PTA for arranging for, paying for, and serving the yummy pizza! Thank you to the Men’s Club for once again erecting and
disassembling the Sukkah in a timely fashion. We teach Hebrew Tefillot (prayers) to our students at every grade level. These prayers give them a familiarity and comfort level with our prayerful heritage as well as
beginning them in their Bar or Bat Mitzvah skills from the very first year of school. Alas, we cannot do it alone. There just isn't enough time in the school week to develop these skills in class. We rely on you, the parent, to give your child's CD that they received at the beginning of the year some play time at home or in the car. It is quite obvious to me as their
teacher (yes at every grade level) when a student is exposed to the music and the Hebrew outside of school. This is where a parent, regardless of knowledge level, can seriously impact their child's Judaic fluency.
One of our goals this school year is to improve the communications between our teachers and our parents. Our teachers are making a concerted effort to keep you informed of what is happening in the classroom. It is intended to be a two way conversation. Please,
if you have any questions, need clarification, or want to know how you can reinforce at home the concepts and lessons your student is receiving at school, contact your child’s teacher. Please volunteer whatever talents your family possesses (no matter the age) for the
SOJC Family Talent Show. Kids love to show off, and they love to be wowed by adults and teens that show the artisan inside. The more acts, the better. And variety is the spice of the show! Special surprises await the family audience!

The Southwest Orlando Jewish Congregation (SOJC) is sponsoring a Holocaust Memorial to be constructed in their synagogue. This project is being led by Eagle Scout candidate Max Waldor and is due to be constructed by Yom Hashoah of 2013. The project will be a wall of tiles memorializing the stories of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust.
Max Waldor is a Life Scout with Troop 996 in the Sand Lake district and is an honors student at Dr. Phillips High School. This project is the culmination of years of service to his community both as a scout, a student ambassador for the People to People program, and a community volunteer to Give Kids the World and SOJC itself. This project is his gift to the Orlando community. Although there are other Holocaust memorials throughout Florida, there are none that represent this awful historical event in South Orlando. The memorial will consist of 288 photographic cork tiles at first, with potential for growth. Each tile will represent a story with pictures and quotes that depict each story. There will also be a website where the stories in their entirety will be posted for access to the public. The tiles will correspond to the stories on the website and some will have a QR code to link to their story. Max hopes for this project to become a
type of legacy in which stories are continually added to the memorial. “I am delighted that the SOJC board decided to support this Eagle project of a Holocaust Memorial for our community,” said Vivian Kerstein, Vice President of SOJC. “It should be a beacon of light for peace and tolerance, and a lesson not turn away when faced with injustices.”
Max is seeking support from the nearby community. There are three ways that you can contribute to this project. Max needs volunteers to help in the design and construction of the project. He also needs survivors and their families to come forth with their stories to substantiate the content of the memorial . Final ly, he needs monetary contributions to facilitate the construction of the project.
To help design this project, he needs people with access to a computer with Photoshop and InDesign. Max will train these volunteers in how to prepare the stories to be printed during mid-December. Another way to help is by constructing the memorial. He needs people to drill holes in the cork tiles and to attach the tiles together mid-March. He also needs more stories from survivors and their families. Any story will do as long as it is yours and it’s not under any sort of copyright. It is an opportunity to include your stories in a memorial that will help to share them with many generations to come. The stories may be submitted now through January 26, 2013. Visit: www.sojc.org/HolocaustMemorial.
If you would like to volunteer in any of the previous ways you can contact Max through his email at [email protected] or call 407-342-6120.To contribute donations for the project send them to: SOJC11200 Apopka Vineland Road, Orlando, FL 32836Checks can be made to SOJC with the memo Holocaust Memorial.
