Principal’s Column Coastal Learning Community Photography Over the last two days of last week, a professional photographer, Mr Dario Gardiman, worked with a number of our aspiring photography students, along with Mr Holliday, our own Photographer (and Visual Art) teacher, in order to capture on film examples of the great work students from our school, along with students from our partner primary schools, engage with together as part of our Coastal Learning Community continuums of learning. Just over 2,000 photos were taken over the two days across all seven Coastal Learning Community schools, involving over 100 students and teachers. In addition, our students took many more photography and video images, benefiting enormously from their time with a professional photographer. These photos will be used to populate our soon to be released Coastal Learning Community website. Many thanks also to Mrs Wiggins for an outstanding job in coordinating this massive project. Farewell to Year 12 The next few days will present a heady mix of emotions for our current Year 12 cohort, as they contemplate the end of their time as “school kids”, the coming HSC exams and what life might look like in 2019 and beyond. For most of our students I know that this week will represent a final opportunity to attend classes with teachers they have formed fantastic relationships with over the past two years, mixed with the opportunity to celebrate in a range of ways what their time at this school has meant to them. I would like to stress to all Year 12 students and their families that the choices they make over the next few days need to be balanced with due consideration that all other members of our broader school community are entitled to go about their business safely and without undue impact from the choices of graduating Year 12 students. I will not tolerate behaviour which unreasonably impacts on others or brings the school into disrepute, and will take very strong action if such behaviour takes place. I would much rather our Year 12 students make reasonable choices and leave our school at the end of

this week with happy memories of this special period of time. On this note, I am very much looking forward to Friday morning’s Year 12 Graduation assembly which, over my time at this school, has proven to be an exceptional school community and “coming of age” occasion for our students, their teachers and their families and friends. I would like to wish all of our Year 12 students all the very best for this final week of their time at school, for the coming holidays, and for their preparations for the HSC exams which are now only a few weeks away. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all of our school community a safe and relaxing school holiday period. Michael Hensley Principal

Career News So much happening. There are some great ideas on getting work in an area you love in the Week 8 Careers Newsletter. Don't forget to sign up to have these delivered directly to you. https://www.kingscliffhighschoolcareers.com/?page=newsletter On Wednesday 12 September a number of students with white cards were able to attend a safety induction and site overview at the Pottsville Primary School Building Site. One student from this day has already started work experience there and we hope to send out more early next term. This is a great initiative by Bennett that will really benefit some of our students. To give more students a great opportunity like this, or even an opportunity to work on a construction site, we are running a White Card Accreditation at school on Tuesday 25 September. The cost of $100 per student is very reasonable. Mr Hadden is running this course so notes can be collected and returned to him. Year 12 are busily applying for Universities, looking at other pathways and really knowing that "Careers" starts now. Making sure they have signed up to Students Online and created their passwords. Careers Capers was another great afternoon for those students who chose to attend. We are so lucky to have people come and talk about their work, their lives and the processes they have done to get where they are. Ex-student Brett Drury led the way telling us about ophthalmology. A take out line of his was that there is no better investment than educating yourself. Jodie Ferrari from the Tweed Art Gallery was keen that students find where their interests lie and follow them. Emma Tabacaru, our SRE instructor explained how her life developed from one path to a completely new one, how hard work determines how far you can get and the importance of connecting to others in life. All three presenters were incredibly interesting and full of great ideas for our students. This is a great activity and the more people who can come in and talk to our students, the better it becomes. Please contact [email protected] if you feel you could participate in a Careers Capers afternoon. We have started having semi regular sessions for students wanting help with resume writing, job applications and doing work experience. These are

advertised via sentral and students are encouraged to attend as they need. That's enough for now. Enjoy your break and we will be back for more Careers next term. Beth Matsuto Kingscliff High School (Language Teacher, Language Network Leader, Careers & Transition Adviser)

Science outside of Kingscliff High School Congratulations to Liam Withers, Year 9, for being accepted into the Griffith University, Gold Coast, ConocoPhillips Science Experience. He will be attending a three day science workshop at Griffith University, Gold Coast from 9 - 11 October 2018. The program is designed to provide students who have an interest in science with an opportunity to engage in a wide range of fascinating science activities under the guidance of scientists. We would like to thank Kingscliff Rotary Club for sponsoring Liam to attend the Science Experience.

Congratulations to Amber Swift and Mia Taylor for being accepted in the Tall Poppies Program at Griffith University, Gold Coast. This will be held from 3 - 5 October 2018. The Tall Poppies program follows an enhanced work-experience model, where students are paired up with Physicists from the University, see their research and laboratories first hand. In groups of four, students will then design their own physics-related research project that they will present at the end of the three days to university guests and the parents. The Tall Poppies program has a really impressive track record for providing authentic science experiences for students and increasing retention rates of girls in science to 90%. Boys Futsal Team

On Friday 14 September both the U14 and U16 Boys futsal teams have walked away from the Far North Coast competition empty-handed but not through a lack of trying. Highlights of the day were an amazing series of goalkeeping saves by Trent Irvine, who transformed into a brick wall putting his body on the line to stop a relentless barrage of shots. Other highlights included a full court goal by Aidan Watts, some fancy footwork by veteran Connor Morton and some rock solid defending by Flynn Thompson and Riley Blake. Angus Holliday Art Teacher

Surf Lifesaving Carnival A small team of five athletes competed in the UQ Surf Lifesaving Carnival at Coolangatta beach last week.

In very windy conditions the Kingscliff team performed well with Sofie Boyd 2nd in Board, 2nd in Iron person and 4th in the Surf swim. Claudia Crawford was 3rd in Flags. Mia Taylor 4th in Iron person, 5th in Surf Swim, 6th in Board.

A big thank you to all parents for taking the students to Coolangatta with all their equipment and helping Mr Eggins on the Day.

Titans Nines Rugby League On Wednesday 19 August, the U16s Rugby league team played the final of the Titans Nines competition against five other High Schools. The first game in our pool match was against Casino High. It was an even match with end to end action and big collisions. The Kingscliff players stuck to their structures and producing a mix of free flowing attack and solid defence. It was only in the dying minute of the match that a Kingscliff error leading to a Casino try and their six point victory.

However Game two against Grafton High, who on face valued looked a much tougher opponent. This was not the case and Kingscliff’s superior game management and skill lead to a 40-6 victory. This was a great result considering the games are only 18 minutes. This victory meant we would have to face Woodlawn or Casino in the Grand Final. It was to be a re match with Casino after Ballina High dispatched Woodlawn in their game.

The Grand final was played in very windy conditions and smart thinking by our captain Nick Reynolds to run into the strengthening breeze. Kingscliff jumped out to a lead before Casino came back to be within 2 at halftime. Shortly after half time some clever play and a break by Oliver Lindley and Tuveia Leon saw Kingscliff High go back in front by 16-10 with 5 minutes to play. Unfortunately a defensive lapse saw Casino cross out wide to take the score to level at 16-16. It was then an

Arm wrestle for the next few minutes before Nick Reynolds had the chance to seal the win outright, unfortunately as he was about to score, a tackle dislodged the ball. Kingscliff were crowned winners only following a count back on scoring, but thoroughly deserved the win.

Congratulations to Nick Reynolds (c), Oliver Lindley, Tuveia, Leon, Jayden McNamarra, Brandon Okeke, Kyiam Barber, Jeremy Reston, Riley Swift, Jayden Martens, Will Slockee and Cooper Taylor on their on field performance and their off field behaviour.

STYMIE Mr Graham STYMIE means to STOP

STYMIE is an anonymous online reporting system. That means when the school receives a report we don’t know who it comes from, we just focus on the student who is being harmed or is in danger. It works because it is anonymous and because it activates the bystander. That means even if you don’t feel brave enough to report what you see or hear to a teacher you can report it online so that its stops. BE PART ON THE SOLUTION, NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM Here’s how to do it. On a device- computer, phone, ipad www.stymie.com.au
