    ABSTRACT

    The successful operation of mass burn municipal incinerators for solid wastemanagement involves many uncertain factors. Not only the physical

    composition and chemical property of waste streams but also the complexityof combustion mechanism would significantly influence the performance ofwaste incineration. Due to the rising concerns of dioxin/furan emissions fromthose incineration facilities in the metropolitan region, the applications offuzzy control technologies for reducing the operational risks have graduallyreceived wide attention in the scientific community. Recent advances ofintelligent combustion control (ICC) technologies indicate that hybrid fuzzycontrol schemes, integrating some ideas and paradigms existing in differentsoft computing approaches, may provide more reliable control performance ofcombustion process. The proposed integrated methodology, using geneticalgorithms and neural networks as tools to aid in fuzzy logic control, thereforeemploys a three-stage analysis. It applies three soft computing approachessimultaneously for generating a representative state function, searching for a

    set of multi-objective control strategies, and auto-tuning the fuzzy control rulebase for use in the case study. The findings from this research clearly indicate

    that the control performance at least in three types of municipal incinerators(i.e., patented stokers are Takuma, Volund, and Martin) is greatly enhancedvia the use of ICC technologies. By using this integrated methodology, thecase study not only verifies the applicability and suitability for controllingmunicipal incinerators but also presents application potentials for controlling

    many other types of industrial incinerators, such as modular, rotary kiln, andfluidized bed incinerators.

    DescriptionThis Proceedings contains the papers presented at the sixth IFAC Symposium on "RobotControl 2000 - SYROCO 00", held in Vienna, Austria, on 21- 23 September 2000.The contributions cover the whole field of robot control starting with the classical subjects like

    non-linear, robust and hybrid control, force and tracking control, modelling and identification,simulation and education, neutral and fizzy control. But new robot applications require newrobot concepts and new control tasks. In consequence most of the contributions deal withmobile, intelligent robots and multiple robot systems but also new applications likedisassembly. One of the fastest growing fields in the last three years is development andcontrol of robots for entertainment, leisure and hobby.In four survey papers the state of the art in robot control and further developing trends wereemphasised. Because the field of robotics is growing up today in smaller countries twopresentations deal with robots in Brazil and Macedonia. The very important field of sensorfusion and an industrial view of future developments in robot control were also topics ofsurvey papers.
