Psychotherapist examines l inks between chi ld abuse and a lcohol i sm

Shares tips for those who sus-pect they may have a drinking problem

College students with symp-toms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) drink more al-cohol than their peers, according to a new study published earlier this year in the Journal of Ab-normal Psychology.

In addition to the problems normally associated with alco-hol abuse, the students’ heavier drinking also exacerbates their PTSD symptoms, the study found.

“The study doesn’t identify what traumas led to the students’ stress disorder, but it’s safe to assume a good portion of them are survivors of child abuse and/or neglect,” says Rayne E. Go-lay, psychotherapist, child advo-cate and award-winning author of The Wooden Chair, (www.raynegolay.com), a novel that illustrates the post-traumatic stress in the wake of child abuse and neglect.

Parental alcoholism is often a factor in child abuse and neglect. It’s compounded by the risk that

as adults, these children model their behavior on their parent – including drinking alcoholically.

Golay, who specializes in ad-dictions counseling, says that in her many years in practice, she saw one common misconception among her alcoholic patients: They all believed that their drinking didn’t affect anybody but themselves.

“That’s simply not true. In a home with an alcoholic par-ent, everyone suffers, the most vulnerable being the children,” Golay says. “They live in an in-secure and unstable home, and because the alcoholic parent’s behavior is unpredictable and terrifying, the children learn to be constantly on guard.”

Not everyone who drinks al-cohol is an alcoholic, Golay is quick to note. And she’s not an-ti-alcohol. However, she urges parents and young adults to se-riously evaluate whether alcohol is a problem in their lives, be-cause there are solutions.

Golay offers these suggestions for people who suspect alcohol may play too important a part in

their lives:• Ask yourself the following

questions; if you answer “yes” to one, alcohol may be a prob-lem in your life.

Have you had the morning af-ter drink? Do you envy people who can drink without getting into trouble? Does your drink-ing cause problems at home? Do you tell yourself you can stop any time you want although you keep getting drunk? Have you neglected your duties because of drinking? Has anybody suggest-ed you should stop drinking?

• Try having one drink every day for a month.

“One drink -- that is, 12 ounc-es of beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of hard liquor -- one drink, no more, no less,” Golay says. “If you can do that, you’re probably not an alcoholic.” She suggests this test because most alcoholics can remain complete-ly abstinent for a length of time, but they’re unable to stop after one drink. To an alcoholic, one drink is too much and a million isn’t enough.

Last Sunday offi cers respond-ed to an attempted robbery at the Guadalajara Café located in the 100 Block of North Hayes Av-enue. The victim told offi cers that two subjects entered the bar and demanded his wallet at gun-point. The victim fought back and several other patrons assist-ed the victim. The two suspects fl ed the bar and were last seen running southbound on Hayes Avenue towards First Street.

The victim sustained only minor injuries as result of this incident.

Moments later, offi cers re-sponded to the area of Cooper Road and Bonita Avenue in ref-erence two assault victims. Two juvenile subjects were located and contacted at that location. Offi cers and paramedics treated the juveniles for their injuries and transported them to a local hospital for treatment. The two injured juveniles are suspects

in the attempted robbery at the Guadalajara Cafe.

The investigation is on-going. Persons with information

regarding this crime are en-couraged to contact the Violent Crimes Hotline at (805) 982-7070 or the Ventura County Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477 and www.venturacoun-tycrimestoppers.org/contactus.aspx to submit a tip via text or e-mail.

Legalization: Who and why?status, it would have a positive impact on communities and our economy. Workers with legal status earn higher wages, and these extra earnings generate more tax revenue for federal, state, and local governments, as well as more consumer spen-ding, which sustains more jobs in U.S. businesses. During the briefing, Sherri Kassoudji, Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of Michigan, explained some of the lessons about legalization learned from the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA). Providing a legal status to unauthorized immigrants led to higher wages for undocu-mented workers and native born workers alike, as well as in-

creased tax revenue and greater investment in their families and communities. "What legalizing the workers meant was that it was a fabu-lous workforce enhancement program," Kassoudji said. And it meant that people could begin to prepare for their lives with legal status, especially for families with children. "These children could prepare for their futures just like everyone else," she said. About 2 million undocumented immigrants came to the U.S. as children, said Roberto G. Gon-zales, Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. Half of them are now young adults, he explained. That means the undocumented immigrants who grew up in the U.S. inter-

nalize the ideas of the American Dream in school, but Gonzales said, "As they approach adoles-cence, as they see their friends get licenses, get fi rst jobs, and they stay stuck, they experience a dramatic rupture in their life trajectories." He added, "It re-ally compels us to think of the benefi ts of legalization over the tragedies of exclusion." The 11 million undocumented immigrants make up about a third of the foreign-born pop-ulation in the U.S., according to Rob Parral, Principal of Rob Parral and Associates. He said on the call the undocumented immigrants live all across the U.S. "When you look at undocu-mented immigrants, you need to look at the fact they live in fam-ilies, they live in households," Parral said, and these households can include legal residents and citizens. "It's important to note that they [undocumented immi-grants] are integrated in mixed families," he said.

investigadores y defensores líde-res estadounidenses, incluyendo a los doctores Paul Aisen, Marilyn Albert, Jeffrey Cummings, Jenni-fer Manly, Ronald Petersen, Reisa Sperling y Michael Weiner.
