TYPE R VS. NURBURGRING

The Civic Type R* and its boundary-breaking ways took us to the Nürburgring – the testing ground for all performance cars. With improved chassis dynamics the Type R pushed its own limits shaving 7 seconds from the previous 2015 model’s lap time, far exceeding expectations – and inspired us to keep on pushing ourselves to dream bigger.

Subtle is not a word one would use to describe the Civic Type R. Its muscular styling and aggressive physique is not for shrinking violets. Every inch of its track tested aerodynamic package is designed to deliver superior balance between downforce and drag, contributing to optimised speed and greater stability.

The weight saving aluminium bonnet is sculpted to cut through the air. The front bumper is shaped to inhibit air turbulence around the front wheels, with a front air

curtain, wide front splitter and deep side skirts that manage airflow and create downforce on the front axle. Air slats in the bodywork behind the wheels reduce static pressure within the wheel arches and improve the lift coefficient, so on the track, you can corner with confidence and precision.

At the rear, the signature Type R wing works in conjunction with vortex generator fins on the roof line, diverting air flow over and away from the rear of the car, helping to reduce the overall drag coefficient.

WELCOME TO YOUR COCKPIT

Its interior is unmistakably Type R. Signature suede-effect red and black fabric high-backed bucket seats offer unparalleled support for sports driving to help keep the driver and front passenger firmly in place through acceleration and cornering.

The steering wheel incorporates red leather inserts and hexagonal stitching, while the dashboard’s carbon fibre effect panelling and race red highlights scream sports performance. Complementing this is the iconic Type R’s drilled alloy sports pedals, iconic spherical machined alloy gear shift knob and custom serial number embossed on the centre console.

At the top of the centre console sits the seven-inch colour touch-screen display.

As well as being a touch-control device for the infotainment and climate control functions, the display also integrates with a reversing camera and LaneWatch. It also offers enhanced intuitive operation and full smartphone integration via both Apple CarPlay®+ and Android Auto®‡.

In front of the driver, the instrument display layout provides vivid clarity and highly intuitive useability. A seven-inch colour TFT LCD Driver Information Interface (DII) display makes up the largest central section of the instrument binnacle, which includes virtual gauges as well as a switchable section that can display a variety of different function readouts including an LED gearshift indicator light, boost pressure gauge, G-Meter and lap time recorder.

EXHILARATING PERFORMANCE

The guttural and highly tuned 2.0 litre VTEC turbo engine responds instantly to your command with an adrenaline pumping 228kW of power with 400Nm torque delivered between 2500-4500rpm. With a tested top speed of 272km per hour*, it's amongst the quickest cars in its class.

A scalpel sharp, 6-speed manual transmission with rev matching function which enables engine speed to be aligned with the main shaft speed during upshifts or downshifts, provides for an intimate and rewarding connection with the driver.

Final drive is transmitted through an exceptionally responsive Helical Limited Slip Differential (LSD) which aids track cornering traction, even during hard driving for a more dynamic driving experience.

EXPERIENCE THE SCIENCE OF POWER AND CONTROL

Raw power is one thing, control is another. Depending on the road and track conditions, you can choose from an enhanced selection of driving modes; Comfort, Sport and +R mode and automatically adjust the suspension dampers, steering force, gearshift feeling and throttle response to suit.

COMFORT MODEComfort mode offers a softer suspension setup and smoother steering feel, for a more comfortable daily drive.

SPORT MODESport mode offers a more dynamic response to your drive. It sharpens the throttle response, stiffens the suspension and increases steering sensitivity. It provides the optimum vehicle set up for driving on the open road.

+R MODE+R mode is the choice for track driving. Engine responsiveness is heightened, with the torque-mapping changed to a more aggressive and performance-focused configuration, allowing more of the available torque at lower engine speeds. Damping force is increased by 15 per cent over Sport mode. This produces a firmer, flatter ride and greater agility for high-performance handling.

The Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) system is retuned for +R mode to focus on acceleration and performance, allowing a greater yaw and slip rate before intervening.
