How do we share the light of

Freemasonry warh young people! As Masons, our besr efforts are directed to those youth who become members of the Masonic yourh groupo

known as DeMolay, Rau1bow and job's 03ughters. These chree junior and senior high school fraternities are founded on Masomc principles, and need our support. DeMolay is open for young men, aged IZ· 21, and Rainbow is open to young women l2·20. Job's J}oughrers is open to young women who are related to a Mason. A 11 of chese youth groups ccach leadership and principles of good cbaraccer through Rituals dtat have cheir roocs in the Masonic experience.

A central pan of the mission of the PA Youth roundation is ro expand the out· reach of these three )'(loth groupo in Pennsylvania and to help establish new DeMolay O>.aprers, Rainbow Assemblies and Job's 03ughrer Bethels. At one time, there were Masonic youth groupo meeting 1n all of our Mnsooic Districts across the sratc, and our goal is to help locallodgo to bnng them back in order to serve the youth of their local communities.

When we reach out ro young people in our ClUes and towns, we also reach their pan:nts, who arc favorably exp<l6ed to the leaders and builders of Freemasonry, and who I cam the value of a fraternicy from che experience o( thear children. Then: is no better way to spread the light of Freemasonry chan by letting others expe· nence irs fellowship. its charicy, and its chMacter·building custom and ceremony.

The Pennsylvania Youth Foundation sponsors most of the cost of food and lodging for members of rhe Masonic youth

Your presence in )'OUr lodge is

important to our Fraremicy just as your presence in your privare home is to your family. Your lodge needs yout assistance in many ways

Including your presence at its mee[ings. All Masons arc obligated to come to

the relief of our distressed Brethren and we do cha t, but seldo m do we co nsider the ftnnncinl distress 0 f our lodges. Mm>y of our lodges, Ornnd Lodge and related Masonic Bodies have implemented, and cont inue to face, severe cost cutting mea~ures m survive with th e limited i ncome rhat is currently ava ilable to them.

Many of our Masonic Organizations nrc opernting with financial concerns. Costs a re forever rising, yet some members are reluctant ro meet the challenge out of their own pockets. Some of our Masonic Bodies are resorting to holding brealcfasts, dinners, selling Masonic items and conducting yard sales to raise money. not for the purpose of fund raising for our charitable endeavor1 but just to provide revenue for operations to keep our craft strong.

The answer ro our financial concerns is to be found within the lodges and not

outside them. Historically, our member1 will answer the call for assistanre as well as th~ on foxed income, and thooe with famtlies all seem to help.

Please help your Fmtemicy by attending \'OUr Lodge and bringing someone you know with you, as this will inspire additional membetship and your financial support. •

One of the ways in which this information is disseminan.:d i$ thl'Vugh Tlte J>c:~ut..~lvnnltJ frecnwson, a quarterly publication C$ttlh·

Kenneth McCany On December 28. 1953, in his inaugural address. Orand Mascer Ralph M. lehr (1954·1955) suued seven goals. Of them, the first was co "~srablish a committee to edit and publish a periodical on the 'State of the Craft' for our entire membership.'' TI1e second \\tnS

TI1c other four goo is concerned M<tsonic cJucation. In the Grand lodge Proceedings for l954, the reporr of the Committee on Library and Museum said rhAr the 1nost important part of ils repol'r was very rccend)r accomplished when Volume One, Number O ne ofTite

At the end of the first full y~'llr ( 1955) of publication, the Committee on Masonic Culrure. now responsible for The PennS)'lwmia Fteemcucn, reported a circula~ tion tlf 90,000. At dm.t time, it was sent only to Brethren who had requested that their names be on the mailing list. In 1962, R.W. Orand Master McKinley ( l962·1963) orJered that eve!)' Pennsyl\'ania Mason should receive a copy, in order tO be informed about the activities of rhe Croft. Since that decree, every Pennsylv·Jnia Mason automatiCfllly receives_. copy.

The Pemt<ylvania Fn!emason had been distributed (1Xlll1 the M!ISOnic Temple by Or•nd l odge stafl'. However, in on.ler tO

ttca.,mmodate the now overwhc1mir~g task of mailing, Brothe.r William A. Carpenter (Eclitor 1954· 1969, 1980-81: librarian a11d Curator 1961·1969: Grand M<>Ster J984-l985) c;rablished" distributiOil office at the MliSOilic Hon1c>s in Elilabethtown. The a rticle written for the 30th anniveJ:Snr,: of Tlte Il'1ul$)'lwmill Fn!<"nCl.i<l>l in November I 984 reflects on the move, seating that the Masonic Homt!s had severn) advnntagl"S for mailing tnore l han 256,000 copies each quarter: thete was mote ~p~ce, members of t he Lallc;~ster P<>St Office Square Club volun· teered hundreds of off-duty hours to set up the mailing syslem, and residents of the Masonic Homes helped by updating the membership ft les a1\d preparing each mail· ing for the addressing machine. Residents continued ro help, as part of the occupa~ tional therap)' program, until l982. With new COI\lpurerized membership files and high-spc>cd labeling machines, it seemed best ro return the distribution operation co the Ma.o;onic 'lcmple in f>hil"delphia, where it was insmlled on the fourth floor.

Enter now-retired Distribution Manager 1-=lannah Erdman, who shared her metnorie.s. Mr$. Erdman said chat The lbms)'lvtn!itt Fn~t!masou and rhe tnailin.g labels were shipped to Grund Lodge, where 14· 16 people under her direction operated a huge, clanking Cheshire label·

ing machine. which a(fixed a label to each copy. With the aid of tying machines, rhc crew then tied and bagged about 210,000 copies accord ing 10 tip code. and dcliv· cred the bnj;s to the bulk •Mil department of the post of{ice, which WOLlJd promptly st•nd lxKk a whole bag if rhere was any small mistake. The shipping back and forth. often in the back seats o( employ· ecs' cars was cumbersome. FcMs for th e safety of t he employees and rhe Sll'ltCt\.lre of the Masonic Ten,ple, because of d1e stress of rhe hcnv)' l\l3<.:hinc::cy on the fourth floor, made the whole process rather ncrvt ... wracking. Streamlin ing became absolutely neceSS<''i'· By the late l980's, the whole post·editOrial operation was given over to a jobbcr .. facil irtltor, who coordinated all of the necessary paper sup· pliers, designers, and pr-imers, as we ll as \Varehot..•.sing and .shipping (acililit..-s.
