Trivia Whiz:Weathering the Storm

Good riddance, Ana. The samegoes for Joaquin and Wanda. Your illwind and rain won’t be missed. TheNational Weather Service has beennaming hurricanes since 1953, andthose were names of recent storms. The 2010 hurricane season is upon usand it typically lasts from June throughNovember. Here are some othersnippets about these storms.

What’s in a name? Alex, Bonnie,Igor and Lisa are among the namesdesignated for hurricanes this year. Ifyou are Cindy or Don, your namecomes up in 2011. Visit the NationalHurricane Center’s web site atwww.NHC.NOAA.gov to see lists ofnames through 2015.

Boy-girl-boy. Originally, onlywomen’s names were used. In 1979,men’s names made the list andgenders rotated every other storm.

On the list. There are currently sixnaming lists in use. For example, the2009 list of names will be used againin 2015. A name is replaced if a stormis so devastating that future use ofthe name on a different storm wouldbe inappropriate.

Troubled waters. The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scaledetermines hurricane strength. ACategory 1 hurricane has sustainedwinds from 74 to 95 m.p.h.;Category 2: 96-110; Category 3:111-130; Category 4: 131-155; andCategory 5: more than 155 m.p.h.

The Eye Has ItThe eye of a hurricane may not be

as calm as previously thought. Theeye, usually 20 to 40 miles across, isknown for its light wind, fair weatherand minimal precipitation. NASAresearchers found that movement ofair around the eye provides energy tokeep the hurricane functioning.

Protecting Your Privacy OnlineSocial networking sites continue

to gain popularity and users. Maybeyou got into a friending frenzy onFacebook and have seen your friendnumbers climb into the thousands. Or,perhaps you’re dying to set up yourown Twitter account. Social mediaseems nearly inescapable these days, but too many people aren’t taking thecommon-sense precaution of lockingthe social-media front door beforeheading out for vacation.

Think about the information you’resharing. Birth date? E-mail address?Phone number? Could someoneunscrupulous use this information to

assume your identity? Havingpersonal information available onsocial networking sites leaves thedoor open for just that. Facebook, forexample, has tons of applications thatseem like fun, but each one includes adisclaimer that you’re making yourpersonal information—and yourfriends’ information—available forothers to see.

This brings us to the importanceof using privacy settings. Mostplatforms let you shield your personalinformation from strangers, and someallow you to customize your privacysettings. Facebook, again, lets youcontrol how much of your personalinformation your friends can reveal toapplications they use.

If you haven’t already, familiarizeyourself with the privacy settings onthe networking sites you use anddecide how much contact informationyou want to share with others.

Fender Bender Follow-UpIf you’ve ever been involved in a

car accident, you know things canhappen in a flash. Preparing yourselfahead of time by knowing what to doafter a collision can calm your nervesif the unexpected happens.

Keep the following items in yourvehicle: a list of emergency contacts, pen or pencil, notepad, flashlight andproof of insurance.

If an accident occurs and it wasyour fault, your first reaction might beto jump out and apologize. In today’slawsuit-happy world, however, manyexperts advise against this. Lawsare complex and what may appear

as your fault might not be.Practice safety first. If you cannot

exit your vehicle because it would beunsafe to do so, stay in your car withyour seat belt fastened. Call 911.

Gather the facts. Exchangeinformation with the other driver:name, address, phone number, insurance company, policy number, driver’s license number and licenseplate number. Also write down adescription of the other vehicle thatincludes make, model, year and color.Get names and phone numbers ofany witnesses present.

Document the scene. Make notesabout the collision and take picturesof the accident with a camera orcamera phone, if possible. If a lawenforcement official is not dispatched(in some locations, officers onlyrespond if injuries are reported) besure to file an accident report with thepolice department.
