Dear Coppard Families,
Spring is here! An increase in sunshine seems to bring an increase in smiles
and people generally feeling happier. Research shows that warm and sunny
weather can have a positive impact on our moods. It’s important that we stay
attuned to our emotional health and find the time to participate in activities
that help us look after ourselves and our well-being. May is a great time to do
that as it is Mental Health Awareness month, and this week kicks off Child and
Youth Mental Health week from May 1 – May 5. The Ministry of Education’s
“Achieving Excellence” publication is their renewed vision for education in
Ontario and promoting well-being is one of the key actions listed in the
document. Students who maintain positive mental health and experience
well-being often have a strong sense of resiliency. Resilience is our ability to
cope with the normal stresses of daily life, and bounce back from challenges.
As a school, we are committed to supporting the development of resiliency in
students by encouraging students to believe in their own strengths, abilities
and self-worth. For more information, supports and resources, please visit the
Ministry website at http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/healthyschools/links.html.
As you will see on the following page, the York Region District School Board is
inviting participation in a Parent Survey. It is available in many language and it
will be sent home this week. Please take the time to complete and return it by
May 19th. Parent voice matters and this is your opportunity to share your input
as we continue our work in supporting student achievement and well-being. We
also look forward to seeing you at our School Council meeting on May 2nd. We
meet at 6:30 in the library. Hope to see you then!

Coppard Character, Recognition and Spirit Assembly
Monday, May 29, 2017
at 2:00 p.m.
This month’s trait is “ COURAGE.”
Every month at Coppard Glen P.S., we host our Spirit and Character Assemblies. We gather together as
an entire school from Kindergarten to Grade 8, to show our school spirit by celebrating accomplishments
and recognizing good character. We also have important messages presented from our student groups
such as Student Council, Me to We and our Eco-Team. Parents are always
invited to attend all assemblies.
The dates for the remainder of the year for Spirit and Character assemblies are
as follows:
Wednesday, June 21st at 9:15 a.m.
The Coppard Glen Character Trait
for MAY is
“COURAGE”
Courage means doing the right thing even when it is difficult. People show courage by
trying new things and following their conscience even if it means not following their
friends.
Character Quote:
“Courage is when you stand up for what you know is right.” —D.B Forrest

Kindergarten Registration
Kindergarten registration commenced on
Friday, January 20, 2017 for the 2017-2018
school year. Registration forms are available
on YRDSB’s website: www.yrdsb.ca.
Children who turn four or five years old
during 2017, live within the school boundary and whose parents are public school tax
supporters will be eligible to register for kindergarten. A kindergarten information
session for parents is being planned for this spring. For more information please visit
the YRDSB website or contact your local school.
French Immersion Registrations
French Immersion registration began on January 20, 2017. Parents or guardians of Senior Kindergarten students entering Grade 1 in 2017, and wishing to enroll in the FI Program, can visit or call the school office and request an Office Index Card - short version. The Office Index Card must be signed by the principal of the home school. Parents or guardians then take this form, along with one piece of identification showing their address (Property Tax bill or any utility bill, NO Drivers License), to the designated FI program location to register. Please visit YRDSB’s website in May 2017 (http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/fi/Pages/Programs-Locations.aspx) to find the FI program location for your elementary school location. YRDSB’s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of access to all students in York Region and will enable YRDSB to continue to
offer the FI program to all who wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or Single Track settings, in a variety of configurations. In order to
meet community needs and optimize available space in our schools, a community's Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one school during
the course of a student's FI education. This will allow flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportunity to use existing space in schools. More
information is available on the Board’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Please note: Some of the FI accommodation plans will require facility modifications or the
development of new schools and will require short-term transition plans that might include overflow while we work toward the long-term vision. Overflow
refers to situations in which the Board directs students to attend a school other than their community school or optional program for a specific period of
time, as defined in Policy #108.

In the 2017/18 school year, York Region Public Health will visit all elementary schools to provide school
immunization clinics to Grade 7 students. The clinics offer vaccines for Hepatitis B, Human Papilloma
Virus (HPV) and Meningococcal A, C, Y, W-135 at no cost.
Under the Immunization of School Pupils Act, meningococcal vaccine is required for school attendance,
unless an exemption is filed with public health. Hepatitis B and HPV vaccines are recommended, but not
required for school attendance.
Parents of students entering Grade 7 in fall 2017 will receive consent forms in the mail in June. Please
complete the consent form and return it to York Region Public Health to allow your child to participate in
the immunization clinics. Detailed instructions can be found on the forms and accompanying letter. If the
consent form is not completed, your child will not be able to receive vaccines at the clinic.
Parents and guardians who do not consent should still complete the forms and return them, indicating
that you do not authorize York Region Public Health to immunize your child.
Visit york.ca/immunizations and click on School Immunization Clinics for more information.
Did you know? If your child has missed a required vaccination on Ontario’s routine immunization sched-
ule, he/she can receive the vaccine at one of York Region Public Health’s Community Immunization Clin-
ics. These evening clinics are offered throughout the summer, giving students the opportunity to catch up
before returning to school. Visit york.ca/immunizations and select Community Immunization Clinics to
learn more.

The Together We’re Better team of Coppard Glen had another campaign this month in school called “Baby Steps” where they collected baby items such as diapers, baby food and baby clothes. The donations will go to help young children at Yellow Brick House. We would like to thank everyone in the community for supporting this drive and making it a huge success.

An Opportunity To Help Our First Nations Neighbours
In April, some student council members along with Ms. Vasilakos and Mme. Uribe
had the opportunity to visit Parkland Public School to hear from Laura Hoeg, a community
leader from Georgina Island, Chippewa First Nations - the closest reservation to us in York
Region. She came to speak on behalf of the children living and attending school on the island.
The school building is more than 70 years old, is in poor condition and does not have its own
gym or library. She is asking for help from concerned citizens to write to the Federal
Government demanding that the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation immediately re-
ceive the available and necessary funding to build a school that meets Ontario provincial stan-
dards. We are inviting students and all interested community members to write a letter to the
Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, to advocate for a quality educational facility on
Georgina Island that is equitable to other schools in York Region. For more information,
please contact Ms. Vasilakos or Mme. Uribe.
Your email/letter can be addressed to the following:
