Slide 4 R ESEARCHING Slide 5 R EAD TO S ELF Slide 6 R EADING M INI -L ESSON Slide 7 G UIDED R EADING GROUPS Slide 8 P ARTNER AND R EPEATED R EADING Slide 9 L ISTENING TO READING Slide 10 R EADING C ONFERENCE WITH T EACHER Slide 11 W AYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD BECOME MORE ENGAGED IN THEIR READING Make sure they have just-right books Give them time to read Look for books that hold your childs interest Model for your child how you choose books to read Give them a choice about what they are reading Slide 12 C HOOSING J UST R IGHT BOOKS Have your child open the book to the first page and read aloud the page; do they miss less than 5 words AND can they retell what they read easily Lexile.com or scholastic book wizard websites Is your child interested in that subject Slide 13 Slide 14 W ORKING ON F LUENCY - M AKING THE READING SOUND LIKE THE AUTHOR WROTE IT Help your child with their pace. We dont want them to read too slow or too fast. Have your child read and reread a text Read a text using different expressions in your voicehow would you use your voice to show this character is mad, excited, etc. Remind your child to pay attention to punctuation Read to your child or have them listen to reading on the computer or books on CD Read to/with your child Reading lyrics to songs Slide 15 W ORD STRATEGIES Look at the pictures! Look at the picture for clues Get your lips ready! Say the first few sounds of the new word Read to the end of sentence and say it again Stretch it out! Stretch the word out slowly Put the sounds together Chunk the Word! Look for a chunk that you know (-at, -an) Look for a word part (-ing, -er) Skip It, Skip It! Skip the word Read to the end of the sentence Hop back and READ IT, READ IT! Try it again! Try to reread the sentence Try a word that makes sense Ask for help! Ask for help (after you have tried all of the other strategies) Slide 16 C OMPREHENSION D O THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY ARE READING Talk to your child about what they are reading Ask them questions, if you are unsure of an answer they give you then have them show in the text where they found the information in the text When reading chapter books, have them stop after each chapter and tell you what is happening.
