  • Ways not to fine tune your rsum: State your reasons for leaving a job. Use abbreviations or contractions. Write lengthy prose. Use multiple fonts, typographic symbols, orother visual elements (like logos or clip art). Use personal pronouns (I, me, my). Include a photograph. Mention personal data (e.g., height, weight, health, age or date of birth, marital status, race, religion, sex, etc.).

  • ActivityLook at the resume in front of you. What things would you do to correct or improve it?

  • Important!Your rsum mustBe easy to readShow the most relevant informationBe tailored to the job

  • Chronological:

Time and continuity. Easy to organize, write, and read. Most commonly used type of rsum. Emphasizes career growth and progression.

It is not advantageous for people with limited or unrelated employment experience.

  • Functional:

Focuses on professional skills, responsibilities, and accomplishments. De-emphasizes dates and specific work experiences. Highlights specific skills that the job requires.

It is good for recent graduates, liberal arts majors, career changers, and people with limited work experience or interrupted careers.

  • Questions?Evaluation

Stress importance of evaluation - JamesPrize drawing JamesIntroduction of presenter - JamesEncourage students (if they brought a resume draft) to have it out during the presentation. - presenterAsk students why they need a resume / what is a resumes purpose (to get an interview)

Spend the most time on this slide talking about the idea of the first impressionParts of a resume slides follow to illustrate ways to list these things on resume. Discuss as needed. Perhaps consider taking questions as well.Point out that on-campus employment is valuable experience.Ask participants: For what type of job do you think this candidate is applying? (one answer: human resources internship)Explain to candidates that they could list activities in a variety of ways but it is essential to include dates of involvement. Here are two examples. Compare / contrast and speak to why you might choose one over the other.Could also include positions heldIf you lieyou will (most likely) get caught!Hand out sample resume. Critique it with participants. Point out things they miss.In case anyone wants to see difference between chronological and functionalDo this if there is enough time. If not, encourage students to see good resume samples in the handouts at the back of the room (Internships and Career Planning, The Job Search, Resume tipsheets)

you Be the Search Committee activity: give out three resumes in varying states of good have students, based on what theyve learned, determine which would be the best candidate (at least on paper). Discuss the idea of being represented on paper and the first impression that it makes. Point out how good candidates can get passed over for consideration or interview based on their resume alone.

You can also use the Resume Rubric handout (which will be provided at the session) and encourage students to evaluate the sample resumes based on the info provided there.Encourage students to see good resume samples in the handouts at the back of the room (Internships and Career Planning, The Job Search, Resume tipsheets)
