•To start, the ___ has to hold a mandrake leaf in their mouth for a full month. They can't take it out to eat or sleep or anything. If it comes out of their mouth or slips down the hatch, they have to start over.

•Then, at the next (visible) full moon, the ___ must put their spit-soaked leaf in a phial within range of the moon's pure rays. If the moon's hiding behind clouds or something where it's not directly visible, they have to start over with another month of mandrake leaf sucking.

•In addition to the moon's light, the X needs some other ingredients, including dew that hasn't been exposed to sunlight or human feet for a full seven days.

•If the ___ manages to get this far into the process, they need to keep the X hidden and out of sunlight. After that, they need to wait. Possibly a while.

•A storm dictates the next step, as the X can't be taken until lightning strikes. Every day that they're waiting for the storm, at sunrise and sunset they have to say. "Amato Animo Animato Y." This can go on for days or weeks or months.

•Detailed instructions include warnings not to panic, and also some pretty terrifying after-effects.

Following, are the instructions that must be followed in order to achieve a certain feat. What?

Once upon a time, back in 1996 a company called Blizzard released a game called Warcraft II. There was one player named Shlonglor, who got VERY good at this particular game. He would dominate anyone and everyone he played against, to the point that he appeared as a Demi-God to some.

Unfortunately, his name became so infamous that eventually people refused to play with him. As soon as he entered a game, the opposition (who had prior knowledge about his abilities) would leave.

But Shlonglor loved this game and wanted to keep playing. So he made a new account, called "Papa ____" and one of his buddies (who was equally good)named himself “____ -ette". They could now enter games. Pretend to be new to the game. Then dominate mid way through, much to the surprise of the opponent. Shlongor would say after his games that he enjoyed “____-ing" that game. Thus the legend of ____ was born. It progressed into games such as SC2 and Tribes 2 and Counter Strike.

Scarlett Howard at RMIT University in Melbourne and her colleagues designed an experiment train bees to differentiate between two numbers. They set up two platforms, each with between one and four shapes on it.

On one platform, bees were given a sweet sucrose solution, and on the other a nasty-tasting quinine solution. Previous research has found that bees learn more quickly if they are not merely rewarded for correct choices, but also punished for wrong ones.

The researchers trained the bees to associate a platform that had fewer shapes on it with the sweet reward, until they made the right choice 80 per cent of the time. The bees were put through further tests with differently shaped objects to confirm that they were responding to the number of shapes and not their appearance.

Through this experiment, researchers have found out that bees are the first invertebrates to understand a particular concept , the concept of ____ .

Legend has it, in 18th-century Ireland, a foul-mouthed drunk and disreputable miser named Stingy Jack asked the devil to go have a drink with him. The devil obliged and when the bill came, there was that awkward moment that we're all so familiar with. Jack expected the devil to take care of things, and the devil thought Jack should pony up. Seeing as how Jack had no money anyway, he convinced the devil to turn himself into a six pence coin to pay the bill. The devil fell for it and Jack skipped on the bill and kept the devil at bay by sliding the coin into his pocket to lay at rest beside a silver cross. The devil was stuck in Jack's pocket, trapped by the cross, but Jack decided to be a good egg and let him out, providing that the devil wouldn't come after Jack for a period of one to 10 years, depending on who you ask. The devil had no choice but to agree and once the coin was removed, he turned himself back into the devil and went on his not-so-merry way.

At the end of the agreed upon timeframe, the devil found Jack for a little payback. Somehow, Jack convinced him to climb a tree in search of an apple for Jack before they set off for hell. The horned one once again obliged, only to see Jack carve a cross into the tree trunk, and leaving the beast stranded again.

Jack must have felt bad, because he agreed to let the devil down if he promised to never claim his soul for Hell. The devil was caught between a rock and hard place once again, so he agreed. When Jack died, St. Peter rejected him at the pearly gates because of his suspect credentials. The devil wouldn't and couldn't let Jack in to hell, per their agreement at the tree. In the end, Jack was given a lump of burning coal by the devil to light his way through purgatory. Jack carried the coal inside a hollowed out turnip.

This long story is the history (or the myth) behind a common practice. What am I talking about?
