Suite for Wind QuintetThe depth and inventiveness of Amanda Harberg’s SUITE FOR WIND QUINTET can only be described as remarkable. Harberg combines the rich tradition of renaissance and baroque dance suites with her own American voice, stirring up dramatic, exciting sounds and stories. Cantus uses the imitative entries of renaissance motets as a jumping off point into a more contemporary world. The playfully virtuosic Furlana refers to the Italian folk dance rhythm in 6, punctuated by lots of unexpected 5’s. Fantasia hints at being a lullaby with an animated and jazz-influenced middle section, and the closing Cabaletta is true to its 19th-century meaning of a rousing closing section following beautiful lyricism. SUITE FOR WIND QUINTET was commissioned and premiered by the Dorian Wind Quintet.

More Music for Windsby AmAndA HArbergSonata for B( Clarinet and PianoHarberg’s uniquely American sound gives voice to the clarinet’s expressive and virtuosic powers within a traditional three-movement sonata. The first movement begins with a sweetly mellifluous melody contrasted by a playful secondary theme, as a nostalgic exploration of youthful innocence. The second movement serves as a bridge into another emotional space, colored by sadness and loss. The final movement transforms the material from the opening movement into an insistent dance exploding with dark, agitated energy.

Court Dances Suite for Flute and PianoIn COURT DANCES, Amanda Harberg’s musical palette sparkles with her trademark sense of imaginative energy, warmth, and lyricism. The three-movement work is a joyful and soulful celebration, commissioned by flutist Cobus du Toit with a consortium of 57 co-commissioning flutists from around the world. Mr. du Toit premiered COURT DANCES at the 2017 NFA Convention with the composer at the piano.

Sonata for Piccolo and PianoAmanda Harberg’s formidable 12-minute SONATA is a major addition to the piccolo repertoire. Commissioned by Regina Helcher Yost with a consortium of the world’s leading piccoloists, Harberg’s unique gift for expressive melody, driving and playful rhythms, and jazz-inspired harmony results in an explosive and thrilling new work that explores the full range of the piccolo’s lyrical and virtuosic powers. Premiered at the 2018 NFA Convention by Ms. Helcher Yost with the composer at the piano, this work is ideal for advanced and professional performers.

Birding in the Palisades for Flute, Clarinet, and Piano Commissioned by the Palisades Virtuosi, BIRDING IN THE PALISADES is a naturescape inspired by the natural wonders of northern New Jersey. 1. Eagles’ Flight creates a nest of impressionist texture giving rise to a soaring theme evoking majestic wings; 2. The Kingfisher and the Fish is a playful drama between predator and prey; and 3. Crows draws inspiration from tales of this species’ sly intelligence. Epigrams by the composer precede each movement as optional spoken lead-ins.
