Principal’s ReportDear Parents, Students and Staff

Welcome back to all the staff and students! I look forward to a great second term at the College. During the holidays I followed the progress of the travelling students and staff as they made their way around Europe. By all accounts it was an amazing experience and I look forward to seeing the photographs and videos.

Some ‘home improvements’ have also taken place over the holidays. A new 30kw solar energy system has been installed; the QBC sign on the auditorium was replaced; new lockers were installed; and the construction of the climbing wall has almost been completed.

These first two weeks have incurred the usual hive of activity, which creates a tremendous sense of community throughout the College. There have been soccer matches, netball matches, cross country training, and our netball girls left yesterday for their annual netball competition down south. Practice continues for the Brazilian Ju Jitsu students, the cheerleading squad and the QBC music bands. Added to this, is the planning for social events and other activities scheduled for later in the year. Once again I thank all the students who participate and also thank the staff who organise, plan and run all these events and activities.

At the assembly last Friday we congratulated our swimmers who received awards and we also paid tribute to the ANZACs who have fought and died in various conflicts around the world.

Students will be writing NAPLAN next week. Our Year 10 students and their parents are invited to attend the Information Evening regarding subject selections for 2018. I also encourage Year 11 and Year 12 students to plan their time effectively and prepare well for the upcoming examinations in Week 5.

As I contemplate all that takes place at Quinns Baptist College, and constantly plan ahead, I continually ask God for His guidance and favour and I take encouragement from verses such as these:

Philippians 4: 6-7Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

EuroTour

On Wednesday 5 April, 39 Year 11 and 12 students and 5 staff members met at Perth airport in anticipation of a 16 day adventure through Europe. Students were bubbling with excitement while most parents looked on a little nervously. Perhaps this show of ‘mock concern’ was masking the savoury thoughts of 16 days of peace and serenity in the home!

Munich

After a short hop to Singapore and then a long 12 hour haul to Munich, the group were met at the airport by a coach. Sadly, we were to discover that the driver was excellent at getting into car parks but had not done the ‘getting out of car parks’ course. This was the first of a number of noisy traffic jams (the Europeans can be quite excitable when the traffic is not moving) we were to cause in the coming days. Having brought Munich airport to a standstill, we finally exited, red faced, en route to Dachau Concentration Camp.

Dachau was an emotionally daunting, but very important, place to visit. It is always interesting to see how the students become so quiet and genuinely take in what happened in this ghastly place only 7 decades ago. The hotel was a welcome sight. Showers were the order of the day after 36 hours of confinement in the same clothing. The two nights in Munich passed in a flash as our enthusiastic tour leader attempted to walk all our feet off. It appeared there was little of Munich we did not see.

Interlaken

The road trip to Interlaken is a delight and the countryside stunning. We arrived in time for the final shout in the shopping centre, much to the delight of those with a love of chocolate. The weather was surprisingly warm and on the Sunday we had to go fairly high into the Jungfrau Mountains to find reasonable snow. Snow activities were the nature of the day.

Paris

After a long day on the coach we arrived at our hotel in Paris, which overlooks the River Seine. Paris is so vibrant and we all devoured the sights, sound and smells (not to mention the French cuisine). Again, there was almost no iconic sight that we did not see or touch. A fun day at Disney followed.

Amsterdam

On our way to the land of cheese, clogs and canals we stopped in at the WWI battlefields in Belgium. Here we held a commemorative service to honour the fallen and our group was left to soberly contemplate the horrors of war amongst the graves of the known and the unknown. Cheese, clogs, canals and the inevitable shopping were the order of the day in Amsterdam.

London

A short hop across the channel—thanks to P&O—brought us to the White Cliffs of Dover. A dash north on a coach then brought us to our hotel in Kensington. This would be our longest stop-over. Again we walked a great deal and covered much ground. Covent Garden to China Town, Tower Bridge to Thames House, Madame Tussauds, the Theatre, and Hillsong all ticked off!

Home

Simply, we were exhausted! The majority slept the 13 hours to Singapore and then the 5 hours to Perth. Even the appeal for food at 11,000 meters was lost. Perhaps, I speak alone for myself.

This group really needs to be congratulated for the way they conducted themselves throughout the tour. Compliments flowed from airline, hotel, public transport and restaurant staff wherever we went. The students are truly a credit to the College and to their respective families. I was immensely proud and grateful to have been a part of this incredible experience.

An enormous thank you to Mr Niman who does a truly remarkable amount of hard work both before and during the tour. His energy, enthusiasm and unflappability seem endless. Thanks too to Mr Bright, Mrs Niman and Mrs Oosthuizen who were wonderful travelling companions and who have a genuine heart for those in their care.

EconomicsThe Year 12 Economic students attended a conference at Murdock University. The event was

conducted by various presenters who enlightened us with interesting topics such as, Trump:

Economic Dementor or Rogue one; Economic Policy for a Transitioning Australia; and

Globalisation. The most informative session was the one where the chief marker of Economics gave

the students insight and tips on how to decode the ATAR exam and also some hints on what aspects to

focus on. It was a very enjoyable day and we were treated with a lunch and a free T-shirt.

Excursion

Japanese Students Cultural Exchange 2017

In 2015 and 2016 we successfully hosted students from a school in Tokyo. Both visits turned out to be an

enormous success for the Japanese students, QBC students and host families alike.

We will be hosting students from the International Christian University High School between Tuesday

25th July and Saturday 12 August. The students are 15 to 17 years of age and there is 1 staff member

accompanying them.

This year, we are looking for host families for these students and their member of staff. I can guarantee

that it will be an enriching experience for all involved, having hosted a student myself last year. Host

families are paid a sum to help out with expenses during the stay.

If you are interested in being a host or would like more information please could you make contact with

me via the front office or email me at [email protected]

The program dates with 15 -17 year old students are as follows;

More information about Nacel can be found at our website nacel.com.au

Every year Nacel welcomes to Australia hundreds of high school students (both boys and girls between 15-17 years of age) from France, Italy, Germany and Spain to experience life in an Australian school and live with an Australian host family. To help facilitate these programs, we work with private and independent schools around the country, and we are currently seeking schools interested in hosting one of our students for 4 or 10 weeks this coming June/July.

The key information is as follows:• The purpose of these programs is for young people around the world to expand their horizons, engage

with other cultures and improve their language skills• We generally aim to place one student per school to promote full immersion• Our students enter Australia on a visitor visa and as such they are a considered a guest of the school they

attend for the short period of their stay• As these are non-academic programs there is no cost or administration for your school • Student are required to pay for all expenses related to school uniform, textbooks and subject resource

charges, public transport to and from school, outings, excursions, personal and incidental spending• The students live with a volunteer host family sourced from your school community (usually students

learning languages are the ideal students to host given the first-hand exposure to another language this provides them)

• Nacel provides marketing materials to you to promote our search for a family to your school community, and once one is found we manage all the arrangements with the family to prepare them for the experience and provide 24/7 support to them throughout their hosting experience

• Nacel provides comprehensive insurance and 24/7 support to students while on the program. The feedback from previous host schools is that it is a wonderful experience having our students in their school community, and it is a real value add for a school’s language program and language students to be able to engage with someone their own age and explore the differences in language and culture. Australian students are also able to realise their level of ability to converse with this person, and by putting their language skills into practice with a native speaker, it can really inspire them and encourage them to continue with their language studies.
