Coincidentally May is also Motorcycle Awareness Month Women Riderrsquos Month Motherrsquos Day (May 8th) Memorial Day (May 30th) and The Indy 500 (May 29th) Additionally the first Friday in May is ldquoInternational Female Ride Dayrdquo which is dedicated to women riders all over the World May is also the month that the ldquoBig Threerdquo begin to phase out their current yearrsquos production of new motorcycles and begin ramping up for the 2017 models with debuts beginning in Sturgis and going into mid September So if you want the best selection of 2016rsquos so yoursquoll have something ultra cool to ride to all the aforementioned events NOW is the time to go and check out all the models and colors that your favorite dealer has in stock I donrsquot think we have ever seen as broad a selection of street bikes as there are available now Since you will have lots of company on the sales floor

ETHANOL UPDATE As the E-15 Ethanol debate drones on it appears we are not doing well Both political parties the EPA the big Agro growers big oil and the Ethanol lobby itself are not budging We have few champions in Congress or the Senate and our opponents have many most of whom are profiting by accepting large ldquocampaignrdquo donations to avoid dealing with facts science and a very vocal AMA motorcycle and power sports industry It is also near impossible to find Ethanol free fuel anywhere on a consistent basis So I have begun looking into and trying some fuel additives that are supposed to offset many of the Ethanol side effects One reason that E-10 Ethanol is so bad is that it raises the ldquoflash pointrdquo of the fuel from 45 degrees F to 6188 degrees F Some may think that a higher flash point has a benefit but instead it causes uneven burning and unbalanced combustion within each cylinder This is especially concerning in motorcycle motors and other small engines such as lawn mowers chain saws etc Harley Victory and Indian motors are all adversely affected by this uneven combustion to say nothing of what Ethanol does to seals gaskets rings etc E-10 is bad enough but E-15 is like feeding your motor a ldquopoison pillrdquo All gasoline pumps are labeled so pay attention

Meanwhile I am going the additive route many of which claim to not only fight Ethanolrsquos higher heat but to restore and bump up horsepower to boot Some accomplish this by using a type of Hydrocarbon Replacement Thermalization

technology I will be experimenting using my older Harley Twin Cam Carbureted motor as well as my newer Indian T-111 fuel injected motor Since I donrsquot own a dyno this will be a real ldquoseat of the pantsrdquo test that will encompass seeing if I can feel more power less heat and better gasoline mileage all of which these additives claim to deliver We will keep you posted

TOLLING Reversing what has become an annual event the Washington State Dept of Transportation has cancelled its plans to raise the tolls on the Tacoma Narrows bridge by 50 cents and it has reduced the increase originally intended for the new 520 bridge It has also changed those dumb ass rules and tolls on I-405 which had created the worldrsquos longest and most expensive parking lot Good work DOT

WARM WEATHER RIDING ADVISORY As you all have seen we are experiencing some of the best early spring weather ever Temperature records were being set consistently through out the month of April To that end the Washington State Patrol sent out a ldquoWarm Weather Advisoryrdquo to all its media contacts asking that we pass along some notes of caution given the fact that drivers would be seeing huge numbers of motorcycles earlier than in previous years and to advise they pay attention and share the roads At the same time they also advised riders to exercise good judgment in regards to speed impairment or both and avoid putting themselves at risk As of April 1st we had already seen 8 fatalities and dozens of serious injury accidents As we go to print we can also tell you that since that advisory sent out March 29th there have been 4 more fatalities in WA as well as several each in Oregon and Idaho

While we certainly cannot control what drivers do we can ride more aware keep the speeds down and skip an alcohol fueled rest stop The state also announced and has implemented a serious round of ldquodistracted driverrdquo patrols whose job is to bring extra focus and attention to those drivers who insist on texting and talking on hand held cells Itrsquos never important how fast you get somewhere itrsquos only important that you get there safely Despite having the countryrsquos oldest hand held cell prohibition itrsquos amazing how many drivers either ignore it or claim not to know about it Have fun enjoy the gorgeous weather but ride defensively and we will see you back here in June with some special event tips and more updates

Hello Biker Friends Itrsquos time to get ready for the 38th Annual Spring Opener Bring your friends and get away from the rat race and party at this old school biker campout

Spring Opener is held in Easton WA just a stonersquos throw off I-90 east of Snoqualmie Pass There are plenty of places to pitch a tent or park your RV the campsites range from wooded settings to large open fields

The main hub of activity takes place around a grassy amphitheater referred to as ldquothe bowlrdquo where a variety of vendors will line the upper outer perimeter selling everything from leather jewelry t-shirts airbrushing tattooing pins amp patches sewing amp leather repair and more Plus there will be a couple of food vendors on hand offering the biker crowd an assortment of options for breakfast lunch and dinner

Naming highways is a long-standing tradition in this country One of my favorites is the transcontinental US-6 which is named the ldquoGrand Army Of The Republicrdquo highway -- another Civil War reference US-30 was once the Lincoln Highway US-1 down in the Florida Keys is known as the ldquoOverseas Highwayrdquo And of course California Highway 1 is known as the ldquoPacific Coast Highwayrdquo and old US-66 is known though not officially as ldquoThe Mother Roadrdquo after John Steinbeckrsquos ldquoGrapes of Wrathrdquo Apparently back in 1940 someone thought it was a good idea to name the old US-99 the ldquoJefferson Davis Memorial Highwayrdquo

So the Legislature this year to address this travesty of history in itrsquos infinite wisdom decided to rename what is now SR-99 the ldquoWilliam P Stewartrdquo highway after a black Civil War veteran from Snohomish County Although no one has called and I can find no map references even in 1950s era maps to either US-99 or now SR-99 being referred to as the ldquoJefferson Davis Memorial Highwayrdquo It does strike me as odd that out here in the West we would christen a highway after the President of the Confederate States I would have expected that somewhere in Mississippi or Georgia At one time there were some markers to give notice and memorialize the Jefferson Davis Highway in Blaine and Vancouver WA but they were taken down years ago The Seattle Times said the old markers are now in a private park near Ridgefield WA I guess Irsquoll have to ride there and check it out one day

As of the end of the Legislative Session SR-99 is now officially the ldquoWilliam P Stewart Highwayrdquo No word if they are planning any markers or memorials to Mr Stewart or an explanation of who he is But Highway 99 is more than the

William Stewart Highway There is more to its history than being named after Jefferson Davis at one time then being forgotten and now named after someone else There is another story of this old road that Irsquove been contemplating here in my winter home of Palm Springs

You see I think Irsquove figured out why most of Oregon and Washingtonrsquos ldquosnowbirdsrdquo such as myself migrate to Palm Springs and the Desert Cities as opposed to other warm places like Phoenix Itrsquos the history of US Highway 99 ndash or rather the old route of that highway

In the pre-Interstate era US-99 once ran from Blaine Washington on the Canadian Border all the way to Calexico California on the Mexican Border Itrsquos the main street through all the cities and towns along its former route ndash Bellingham Everett Seattle Tacoma Olympia and Vancouver It was Aurora Ave in Seattle and the waterfront viaduct In fact you can still see an old US-99 sign at the viaduct entrance on Columbia Street in downtown Seattle

In Vancouver it crossed the river to Portland and headed on down South splitting in Portland to US-99W and US-99E which are todayrsquos OR-99W and 99E through the Willamette Valley In California it was the main highway through the San Joaquin Valley down past Sacramento Fresno and Bakersfield It went over the Grapevine and then down into LA and turned eastward to Glendale and up over San Gorgonio Pass and into Palm Springs From there it went along the Western Shore of the Salton Sea and ended in Calexico on the border Once I-5 was finished the old highway was decommissioned and turned over to the states and left abandoned or its remnants as local or state highways

I firmly believe this is the reason that when I go to Costco here in Palm Springs that the majority of license plates in the parking lot are from Washington and Oregon Back in the 1940s and 1950s when people started coming south in the winter US-99 was the road down from the Pacific Northwest It led to Palm Springs As generations of families vacationed and wintered to where US-99 brought them the notion of Palm Springs became ingrained in the residents of the Northwest and now Palm Springs is their winter home

That my friends is the real history of Highway 99 Itrsquos history as a migratory route Not being named after the President of the Confederacy nor changed by the legislature to a little known black soldier who fought for the Union No like US-66 the Mother Road of John Steinbeck that brought the dustbowl Okies to California and returning WWII soldiers on vacation to the West Highway 99 brought the Pacific Northwest to the Desert

Perhaps that is what should be memorialized California is marking its old major highways with signage acknowledging that fact designating the remaining sections road as ldquoHistoric US-99rdquo Irsquom glad to see that someone ndash whether it was Washington DOT or another entity ndash has placed similar signage along Pacific Highway in Fife and elsewhere The old US highway system in the pre-Interstate days is the real history and story of this highway

he Washington Legislature has adjourned for the year and one of the critical pieces of legislation that passed was House Joint Memorial 4010 which addressed a most urgent matter that required immediate legislative action

right up there with transportation funding and education It seems that someone discovered that Washington SR-99 was back in 1940 when it was US-99 christened the ldquoJefferson Davis Memorial Highwayrdquo You should recall from your High School History classes that Davis was the one and only president of the Confederate States of America

Motorcycle enthusiasts donrsquot need a reason to ride but give us a reason or a good cause to get behind and ride we must It is in the very fiber of genetic make-up for us to ride our motorcycles Just as the oil flows through our engines our blood runs clean and happy whenever we are riding Everyone should have a ldquoBronze Bike Experiencerdquo and the best place to get it is at the Wallowa County Thunder Run Home of the Bronze Bike the WCTR will be taking place this Aug 25-28 at the fairgrounds in Enterprise Oregon This is an annual run and this will the WCTRrsquos 3rd year

The scenery doesnrsquot get much better anywhere than when riding around our beautiful countryside You have choices you can ride the Blue Mountain Scenic Highway the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway or just throttle out and see for yourself the pristine clear waters of Wallowa Lake Better yet ride it all

A brief history of the WCTR In the first year the ldquoBronze Bikerdquo was unveiled Those in attendance were drowned in a deluge of a drenching rain It was a great time Second year the run offered up its first WCTR beautiful challenge coin and a smaller statue of the ldquoBronze Bikerdquo was raffled off The lucky winner

was in attendance While this was all happening the surrounding forest lands were being ravished by fires It was a great time So whatrsquos my point Itrsquos an old clicheacute but ldquo3rd time is the charmrdquo This

the Bronze Bike came to Dick from his fatherrsquos military experiences

Dickrsquos dad was a Veteran of both the fierce fighting which took place in Iwo Jima and the Korean War Acquiring the surplus rsquo45 H-D he got the bike running properly and rode it around whenever he could for therapy Thus the inspiration of the Bronze Bike

The Bronze Bike is interactive art which means you can sit on it and have a picture taken with you and your passenger Irsquove seen many smiles on peoplersquos faces when they have their own personal moment with the bike

The smaller bronze statue a limited edition ldquoThunder Runrdquo is raffled off every year Only 3 have been made so far and after 50 have been made the mold will be destroyed forever A real collectible it has a value of $3150 (one sold to an art gallery out east last year) Raffle tickets can be purchased one for five bucks or you can purchase six tickets for a twenty Last year the winners of the small statue were in attendance

and they practically brought the house down once they realized they were the winners

There are lots of good painters around but there are very few great painters who can truly be called ldquoartistsrdquo One such artist is Jeremy Ferguson Jeremy and I first met when the buyer of my beloved 2003 Gilroy Indian Chief Vintage Frank Gigliotti required Jeremyrsquos services after a minor accident to the bike last year Since Frank and I had become friends I was kept abreast of the repairs and the decision to do an entirely different paint job using a twist on one of Indianrsquos original paint schemes involving lots of Gold Leaf which has become a lost art form in itself The paint which is featured in this article combined the traditional with the new and then the art deco twist using the Gold Leaf Amazing I then began asking to see more of Jeremyrsquos work done at his LGM Graphix shop in Langley BC The work is so unique especially when it features animals both real and mythical that I had to know more

about Jeremy himself and how he came to be the artist he is today Here is Jeremy in his own words ldquoAs a child I was always involved in both artistic and technical things I always loved my art classes all through school and along with my father became heavily involved in RC airplanes Then I got big into plastic modeling Plastic models brought me to my first airbrush and my first attempts and failures at painting with an airbrush As time progressed and I finished high school plastic models painting and RC models took a back seat to music I had been playing guitar since I was 11 years old and when I turned 18 I quit my job and went on the road with a band After a year of being broke and tired I decided that it was time to try something different I moved back home and while I didnrsquot get a haircut I did get a real job At that time I had my first motorcycle

a 1983 Honda CM250 Shortly thereafter I sold that and bought a 1981 Honda CB650 Some friends of mine gave me a rear fender and seat from a Harley Davidson Sportster and I began customizing my first bike Some minor fabrication and a poorly done paint job later and I had my first custom A friend of mine then asked me to paint his gas tank for his V45 Magna I guess that was kind of the start however that start ended rather quickly I had aspirations of actually making a good living so I left the slightly better than minimum wage job I was in and started an apprenticeship as a machinist I worked in machine shops for about 7 years By that point I hated the job I was sick of heavy lifting sick of greasy hands and sick of being ragged on by people in the shop who while they had seniority in the job were terrible at what they did I went back to guitar but not in the same way as before I still played of course but while looking for work I decided to customize a guitar of my own I did an inlay in the fretboard showed it on a couple of guitar forums and all of

a sudden LGM Guitars was born I began doing primarily inlay work but soon people wanted custom bodies built They wanted different colors on the guitars and graphics After a steep learning curve I was painting guitar bodies with reasonably good success I had long since sold my old Honda 650 and in 2004 decided I wanted another motorcycle I went to every dealer in Red Deer and test rode bike after bike I went to the Harley Dealer last I didnrsquot really want to spend the money on a Harley even though Irsquod always wanted a Harley The test ride seemed life changing This will sound like an advertisement but at that time I realized that a Harley does really feel different than everything else It was smoother the center of gravity was lower the power just felt hmmm fuller if thatrsquos a word I walked out that same day with a 2004 FXST softail About a week went by and I pulled the bike apart so I could paint it I took it to a ride in bike show at a fellowrsquos shop who would later become a good friend and my bike won best paint Today I look back at pictures of that paint job and cringe but it opened a door for me I did a couple of paint jobs for the local Harley Dealer and then shortly after that the owner of the shop that I had gone on that ride with wanted his bike painted I saw this as an opportunity to do a really big spectacular paint job on my bike I traded paint work for

mechanical Had them strip the bike right down to the frame and that bike became the American Flag bike I rode that bike proudly as a memorial to the friends I have who have served in the military Canadian and American I rode that bike proudly as a tribute to the blanket of freedom that I sleep under every night provided by the

USA Donrsquot get me wrong I am a proud Canadian but I truly appreciate and believe that we continue to have the freedoms we do because we are good neighbors with America and I fly an American flag just as proudly as a Canadian flag In August of 2005 I met my wife Buffy She lived in Abbotsford British Columbia and so I packed up everything I owned rented a truck and moved out here in November of 2005I opened LGM Graphix at that time and started a new life In the beginning I was doing almost all cars quick repaints and restorations I was still doing bikes but as I was unknown in the area it was a bit of a challenge finding the bike work In 2007 I started doing all of the paint work for Mountain View Harley Davidson in Chilliwack and that opened more doors Now 9 years later I am still their exclusive painter and proud to be painting for a dealership that continues to grow and has one of the best reputations in

In the motorcycle world nothing designates a personrsquos bike more effectively than his own custom paint job The right one can take a motorcycle to the next level just as one poorly executed can drop it to being just another bike Itrsquos a total process that should fully involve the owner and his chosen artist from conception to execution to the final finished product The end result should be the exact statement that the motorcyclersquos owner wants to make It should have impact and ldquospeakrdquo to all those who see it You are spending thousands taking lots of time and effort The end result should be rolling functioning art It should be YOU

some wild1 - 4-Cylinder FN (Fabrique Nationale de Herstal) Belgian Co Est 1889 Worldrsquos first 4-Cylinder Motorcycle Famous for use of Shaft Drive in all models 1903-1923

2 - 1938 Francis-Barnett Cruiser 45 The 250 cc Cruiser (1932-1940) designed by Bill King was one of the first motorcycles to have a faired

engine protecting the rider from oil and dirt

3 - Bike with radial engine - very rare

winding road with great scenery and plenty of bees I had a full face helmet

on at this point I did not grab my beanie helmet for this trip as I figured I

would be without when I could and deal with the full face when required

Big mistake While riding along with the visor opened for ventilation I got

stung by a bee not once not twice but 3 times Then we stopped at a scenic

overview to check out the beautiful area for a few minutes and as I threw

my helmet back on I got stung 2 more times We continued on with the ride

even though I was in pain but thankfully Irsquom not allergic I had calmed

down a bit when another bee came through the small crack in the visor

and stung me just below the eye I couldnrsquot believe it We made it to Deals

Gap Motorcycle Resort where we had breakfast bought some t-shirts but

damn they didnrsquot have any beanie helmets As we were about to depart and

cruise the Tail of the Dragon the shop across the street opened up so we

checked it out I found a couple stickers for my kid and as I went to pay I

saw that they had one small beanie helmet and it was my size I wouldrsquove

paid $300 or more for that $100 helmet I didnrsquot care I just didnrsquot want any

more bees trapped in my helmet When she told me the price was $120 I

couldnrsquot get the cash out fast enough

Next up we were off to ride the Dragon I had heard about this road for

many years Was it a bunch of hype was it over rated - Yes Was it worth

the trip Hell yes Would I do it again Planning on it There were 318

curves in 11 miles with no driveways roads or other means of cross traffic

The curves were tight and fun the only things to watch out for were drivers

crossing into your lane cops photographers and more cops I saw a cop

on a marked Harley I saw cops driving a marked patrol car a C6 Corvette

and an SRT 8 Jeep Grand Cherokee There have been many injuries and

deaths on this stretch of road so you must watch out About a frac12 mile after

leaving the resort we entered Tennessee twisting and turning through the

countryside As we rolled out of the Dragon it opened up to a great view

of the water and dam from there we continued though the green landscape

and headed northwest I fell in love with that area too The people and the

scenery were wonderful all the way to Nashville

We continued on towards Kentucky and found some rain but it only lasted

about 10 minutes The ride through Kentucky was pretty short as we were

shooting for Missouri for the night By that point it was pretty warm and

humid and I was dying to ditch the brain bucket Not too far from Illinois

a no helmet state I could see the river so I unstrapped the skid lid As we

got on the bridge I took off my helmet and ran my hand over my head as

I looked over to my right there was my son flipping me the birdhellip while

wearing his full face helmet Sorry dude my choice my right and yoursquore

only 16

As we rolled on through southern Illinois towards Missouri I was watching

these dark mysterious and downright mean looking clouds Not liking

this I looked at the GPS and how the road followed then looked back at

the clouds again I watched the GPS and the clouds for what seemed like

an eternity until I saw we were 2 miles from the hotel Wersquore going to make

it I thought we just need to go up a couple blocks catch the interstate for

a mile and the hotel would be right there As we got to the stop light close

to the interstate we started to get hit with a few drops of rain I had on a

sweatshirt and Irsquod put my beanie back on my kid had a full face helmet

and a waterproof riding coat on We looked ahead and all we could see

was rain literally bouncing off the pavement My son looked over at me

pointed and laughed Irsquom thinking ldquoOh hell no wersquore almost thererdquo so

we made a right turn followed the road that parallels the highway while

staying dry made a left turn at the next big intersection and shot over the

freeway to the hotel evading the rain again We parked the bikes under the

covered drop off area and as we got off the bikes the downpour hit

The next couple days were spent in the heartland as we rolled through

Missouri Kansas and Nebraska We had to hold up an extra night due to

tornado warnings but again no danger was met face to face

While in Nebraska we were noticing a haze on the horizon when we

dipped into Colorado it was still there as well as in Wyoming It wasnrsquot

until we stopped for food and fuel in Wyoming and I asked the waitress

what the haze was from She said ldquoItrsquos the smoke from the fires in

Washington Oregon Idaho Montana and Californiardquo Damn we could

see that haze mid-way through Nebraska We stayed the night in Rock

Springs Wyoming a small town with a great hotel and nice scenery We

watched the news in the morning and saw there was no way around the

fires so we planned to just jump on the interstate We ran I-80 through

Utah to the Bonneville Salt Flats and of course being racers we had to

run the scoots down the salt which by the way we are still cleaning off the

bikes It was a great time on the salt I really want to get back down there

and run my Dyna in the time trials unfortunately the last couple years

Speed Week was canceled due to the water on the salt All of the mining is

having a major effect on the salt beds

We made it to Twin Falls Idaho for the night and breathing was difficult

from the smoke The next day as we rode through Oregon I didnrsquot

recognize it the air was smoky the ground was black and it wasnrsquot the

Oregon I knew When we arrived back in Washington my wife met up

with us in Tri-cities We opted to stay the night just for the heck of it even

though we could have pushed on and made it home sooner But it sure was

nice to have a hotel room alone with my lady for the night too The next

day we cruised over White Pass and made our way back up to Olympia

to my momrsquos house My son and I dropped her off I got my Dyna back

and we headed for Shelton The Ultra Classic made for a cushy ride but it

sure felt good to be back on my Dyna feeling the road beneath me and the

power and noise that my bike makes My son and I ended the trip riding

side by side the rest of the way home

All in all it was a great trip no major problems no accidents and little rain

Irsquom looking forward to doing another trip with my son and this time my

wife I would like to give a very special thank you to my mom for making

this dream a reality for all of us Love you Ma

Q Local riderI have a 2013 H-D Limited Ultra Classic 103ci completely stock I would like to change the slip-on mufflers to some with fishtails and add just a little more lsquotonersquo than stock I donrsquot want it real loud My question is can I change the slip-on mufflers without having to change the air intake and having the bike tuned The bike runs great and I donrsquot want to start down that slippery slope of additional modifications Thanks

soon after their purchase of a bike They love their Harley but in the

stock configuration it just doesnrsquot sound like a Harley Slip-ons are

the most cost effective way to change the tone of the bike and a lot

of people go that route That being said any change to the engine

the exhaust or the intake will require a dyno tune If you are going

through all of this anyways I would highly recommend going with

a stage one kit That would be a full exhaust system and an air box

Not only will you get the tone that you are looking for but you will

really wake your bike up This is a very common upgrade and if done

professionally and followed by a dyno tune the only problem you

should run into is trying to get the smile off your face

Q Robert WaltersHey Steve Irsquove been working on a lsquo91 Softail Custom for the past 6 months The bike had been sitting for God knows how long Last service record was in lsquo04 I cleaned out and recoated both gas tanks replaced the petcock fuel lines and rebuilt the carb The bike will not idle despite stop screw adjustments and during acceleration the motor will periodically pop or cough Any suggestions would be helpful

A Robert I believe that you are on the right path with this bike I would still say that your problem lies in the tank I have seen it many times Coating a tank is difficult and the products out there are not the best I would drain the tank and pull the petcock Check your screen for debris and then check the bowl of the carb to see if any debris made it to the carb If you find debris then I would try and get all that coating you just put in the tank out In the past I have filled the tank with nuts and bolts and shake it for an hour then flush it If you keep your tank full of gas then it will not rust and there is no need for the coating You might want to also think about running an additional in-line fuel filter from the tank to the carb Just to catch any small particles that might be left over Now that being said if you find no debris and everything is clean you might want to look at the overall general health of the engine A compression and leak down test would be the next step You would be looking for about 140psi-150psi on a stock EVO and you want the cylinders to be within 10 of each other Hope this helps

Q Ernie WoodHi Dyno Steve I have a question for you about something that I have

a hard time deciding on I have a 2015 Street Glide Special with a

Screamin Eagle Heavy Breather and had the Harley dealer do just a

download on it I also have 45 slip-on exhaust from Vance amp Hines

I want to get the next step which involves dyno headers and a Super

Tuner but some say to do the VampH Fuel Pak Which one should

I do The VampH FP3 or the Super Tuner and a dyno Or is there

something else that you suggest to get more power Please let me

know I appreciate any answers thanks

A Ernie if you are asking my personal opinion I would go with

the Super Tuner with no hesitation The VampH Fuel Pak is the worst

option It can make some adjustment to the fuel delivery but it is very

limited and you can only make adjustment to ranges not individual

throttle positions and rpm ranges The VampH FP3 is much better It

allows a tuner to make a custom map I have tuned many bikes with

the VampH FP3 and results are the same and using other modules like

the Super Tuner and TTS Master Tune The reason why I donrsquot suggest

it is that it is not set up for professional use The tuning must be done

from a phone or tablet and the interface that it uses makes my job

harder than it needs to be With all this being said my suggestion to

you for the best results would be talking to the individual that you are

going to have tune your bike Not everyone has had the opportunity

to work with so many different modules as I have and we all have a

preference Chances are if you go with what he or she is comfortable

with you will get the best results

Q RobertHello Steve long story short I have a lsquo09 V-Rod Muscle with PCV (wout Auto tune) upgrades VampH slip-ons and KampN air filter and the bike has approx 5k miles About 6 months ago I started looking to get more out of it without going into the motor Folks I talk to recommend a guy up north from Seattle He seemed knowledgeable and spoke highly of the PCV and steered me away from Harley shops and SERT tuners He could sell install and dyno I bought my own installed it and had him dyno the bike about 4 months ago He said he got 6-7 hp to rear but his computer had just ran out of ink and he would email me the results Since I have been out of country on business and on vacation plus I am a fair weather rider only I have never received my results My question to you is was it necessary to have it dynorsquod or was it a plug and play I have heard ldquoit dependshelliprdquo depends on what Since you are certified by the Dyno Jet company I would ask you and you claim to be the best What about other brands like the MTT Master tuner or Thunder Max Did I get the best for what I want to do being get the most out of my motor without going inside of it The end outcome after the dyno - my bike seems a little faster sometimes a lot it stills pops on deceleration What are your suggestions on getting the most out of my bike

A Well Robert you are on the right path A stage one (air box and

full exhaust) with a tune is the best way to get the most out of your

bike without cracking into the motor The PCV is a very competent

module It is not as simple as plug and play but some people do use

it that way Dyno Jet has downloadable maps that you can load into

the module Some of them are close some are not The only way

to get the bike dialed in is to put it on a load control dyno and have

someone write a map for you TTS Master Tune and SE Super Tuner

are very good They are re-flash modules that actually let you re-flash

the ECM and you donrsquot have to have the module on the bike so there

is one less device to go wrong As far as end results go with a stage

one you should notice no difference between the PCV and one of

these modules The reason that the tuner you went to suggested the

PCV is probably because he is more familiar with itrsquos interface All

the different modules have different interfaces that require different

techniques for tuning the bike He is probably just better with the PCV

and gets the best results from it As far as getting the most out of your

bike with the V-Rod you are right there Cams would be the next step

but they make the bottom end very difficult to ride So unless you are

always on the pipe and hitting the rev limiter I would not suggest this

A full exhaust instead of just slip-ons may be the next best step for

you If you do change the pipes you will need to tune it again

Q Joe Roberts Lake Stevens WADyno Steve In January I read your QampA about the cams in the high output 103 I too have a 2014 Street Glide love the bike If the cam is closer in similarity to a stock cam and the bore stroke amp compression ratio are the same as a stock 103 then what makes it a high output Thank you for your time

A Hey Joe The cams for the 103HO are close to stock but they are

different They lay somewhere in between stock and the SE-255 Here

are the specs

Stock lift 484 duration 198 intake 222 exhaust

103HO lift 511 duration 212 intake 233 exhaust

SE-255 lift 556 duration 211 intake 235 exhaust

The HO cam does make a difference Irsquom sure you can feel the extra

power It also shows that a relatively small change in the cam profile

can make a big change in power I hope that clears it up for you
