Quick News February 14, 2013 A Message from Dr. John Kronour, Superintendent of Schools. Tipp City Schools and Tipp City Police are committed to keeping our students safe. On Wednesday, a high school student found a threat that was written on toilet paper and placed on the back of a toilet. The note stated: “School Columbine Number 2. 2-14-13. Good Luck.” School administrators contacted me and Tipp City Police. Following our Emergency Procedures, we immediately put a security plan in place. School administrators were in constant contact with the police and followed their plan all the way to which parents should be notified. Wednesday evening police, officers coordinated with the Air Force K9 Unit and brought their dogs to the high school building. A detailed sweep was conducted and nothing was found. Thursday morning, prior to students arriving, police officers were at the high school, preparing for the school day. A very organized plan was in place. Students were directed to an area near the entrance and were instructed to put their back packs on the sidewalk while they were sniffed by dogs. Students were then instructed to place their belongings in their locker and report to their first period class. Students were very cooperative. The Miami County Sheriff’s officers were at Tippecanoe Middle School during the opening of school. Security was and will be heightened at all of the buildings during the rest of the school day. Friday we will maintain a heightened level of security including police patrols in our buildings. The staff at Tipp City Schools is very appreciative of the Tipp City Police’s attention in this matter. Tipp City Schools and Tipp City Police are committed to keeping our schools safe.

What Can You Do To Help Others

Recently the Tipp-Bethel Girl Scouts were posed with the question

ldquoWhat can you do to helprdquo while trying to plan their Annual

Leader-Daughter Overnight Trying to think of a community service

project that kids can do in January to benefit their community is not

as easy as it sounds There are lots of opportunities available but

they had to come up with an idea that they could implement on a

Saturday afternoon in a lodge Thatrsquos when the idea was sprouted

for the Police Department ldquoBusy Bagsrdquo

The ldquoBusy Bagrdquo idea was from watching media coverage of

what happened in Newtown Connecticut Lots of children were

waiting a long time for their loved ones to pick them up These

children were scared and traumatized with nothing to keep them

occupied but their own thoughts While the Newtown tragedy was

large and unprecedented the reality is that Police officers come into

contact with children all the time who are scared and traumatized

Many times officers are able to give these children stuffed animals that have been donated by community

members For some children the stuffed animal is a perfect comforting tool but what about the other children

that need more

This is where the ldquoBusy Bagrdquo idea comes in When a child needs more than a stuffed animal to be

comforted while they wait for loved ones to come get them social workers to come or to tell their story Police

offers can give them a ldquoBusy Bagrdquo The ldquoBusy Bagrdquo is designed for the child

who needs to keep active either physically or mentally to cope with a given

situation

On January 26th attendees of the Tipp-Bethel Leader-Daughter

Overnight made 50 ldquoBusy Bagsrdquo with the help of donations from local

businesses Cairns Toys of Tipp City Meijers of Troy McDonalds and Taco

Bell of Tipp City WalMart of Troy and unused coloring book pages stickers

and small toys from the Girl Scouts who helped make the ldquoBusy Bagsrdquo

Included in the ldquoBusy Bagsrdquo were white paper lined paper a 24 count box of

crayons coloring pages word finds paper robot books Happy Meal toys mazes

and stickers

The ldquoBusy Bagsrdquo were donated to the Tipp City Police Department and

received by Officer Dan of the DARE Program While the idea of the ldquoBusy

Bagrdquo sounds great in theory no one has ever done a project like this before

Officer Dan volunteered to give feedback to the Tipp-Bethel Girl Scouts If the ldquoBusy Bagsrdquo help at least 1 child

the Tipp-Bethel Girl Scouts would like to continue making them for the Tipp City Police Department as well as

Police Departments that serve residents in Monroe and Bethel Township which our part of our Tipp ndashBethel Girl

Scout Community
