Quick News October 4, 2012 Interim Reports Distributed Friday, October 5 th ! Mr. Steve Hottle and Mr. Jon Baumhauer High School Guidance Counselors The most important part of being a High School Guidance Counselor is being available. Guidance counselors must be available not only to students but parents and teachers. High school students are facing more challenges every year. The ten biggest issues facing high school aged teens are: 1.) Depression; 2.) Drugs and Alcohol; 3.) Faith; 4.) Media; 5.) Money; 6.) Personal Image; 7.) School; 8.) Sex; 9) Stereotype; and 10.) Stress. These challenges are piled onto a teenager as they are trying to find their way through life. Academic pressures add a large amount of stress to teens’ lives. Pressure for high achievement from parents, teachers, and collegesas well as self-induced pressureforces students to prioritize their academic success. Also, while being involved in extracurricular activities keeps teens away from negative behaviors and makes them well- rounded individuals, these may create additional sources of stress. Tipp City Schools’ has two guidance counselors, Jon Baumhauer and Steve Hottle, designated to the high school. This year the high school has an enrollment of 893 students and our guidance counselors are responsible for each student and helping them field their way to the next level in life. Every day they deal with students advising them on issues pertaining to college admission, financial aid and scholarships. They also provide emotional support by listening to students and helping them with any personal problems. Guidance counselors are responsible for providing social, educational, vocational and even crisis counseling to students dealing with topics like drug addiction and dangerous sexual behavior. It’s difficult to split the duties evenly, but Jon Baumhauer is responsible for students with last names A through K and handles all of the OGT testing, AP testing, and the representative to the MVCTC. Steve Hottle has students with last names L through Z and handles College Coordination and Graduation. With working with each student’s class schedules and keeping students on track for graduation, the biggest challenge for Baumhauer and Hottle continues to be staying available. While talking to a student about personal issues they will get two or three requests in their mailboxes for conferences about college scholarships or testing requirements. Emergencies do come up and everything is dropped to handle that child’s needs. To provide social, educational, vocational and crisis counseling to high school students a person must possess a Master of Education in School Counseling and most master's programs in school counseling include practical experience with school-aged children. Previously, Tipp City Schools’ had three high school guidance counselors, but with the failure of the August levy and Amy Cochran’s retirement, the department has been cut back to two people. If a girl has an issue they would be comfortable speaking to a woman about, they are referred to the L.T. Ball counselor, Mrs. Tammy Conley, a lady teacher or Mrs. Banks. The Tippecanoe High School guidance department takes an active role in each student’s high school career. It is an important and rewarding position and that is why Mr. Jon Baumhauer and Mr. Steve Hottle deserve to be, In the Spotlight!
