Maverick Coaching Staff

Head Coach Nathan Owens returns for his fifth season in 2008-09 and hopes to ride the momentum of another fantastic finish to the 2007-08 season. After leading the women to four consecutive top-25 fin-ishes at the national meet - and guiding the men to a 14th over-

all finish a year ago, Owens is excited about the potential of the Maverick squad for this season. Last season was the highwater mark for Maverick swimming and diving as nine student-athletes (men & women) earned 27 All-American Awards. On the men’s side, Owens tutored Marty Wahle to All-American status in six events at the NCAA Division II National Championships. Wahle marked the first non-male diver to earn All-American honors since the 1994 season. This past summer, Wahle qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials where he finished 36th in the 200-meter backstroke. Last season, Ben Dowswell, also achieved All-American status in the five events at the Division II National Championships and also qualified for the Candian Olymipic trials held last April. On the women’s side, the Mavericks earned All-American hon-ors in the 200-medley relay, 400 medley relay, the 200 free style relay, the 400 freestyle relay and the800 freestyle relay. Junior transfer, Jenna Smith finshed with All-American honors in the 200 yard breaststroke. In all, Owens has coached 14 different swimmers for a total of 54 All-American honors. He also has mentored eight swimmers who have claimed NCC Championship awards. A two-time NCC Coach of the Year – most recently in 2007-08 – Owens led MSU to a third-place finish on the men’s side and a fifth-place finish on the women’s side. Owens saw two individuals and a relay squads claim NCC titles last year on the men’s side. In 2005-06, Owens led the Mavericks men to a third-place finish and the women to a fifth-place finish at the NCC Championships. For his efforts on the men’s side, Owens was named the NCC Coach of the Year. On the men’s side, Owens has seen 14 school records fall un-der his tenure, while 18 school records have been broke on the women’s side. Prior to coming to Minnesota State, Owens served as an assis-tant coachfor Texas Christian and helped guide the Horned Frogs to back-to-back Conference USA titles. He also served as a head coach at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis., from 2000-2002. Prior to his appointment at St. Norbert, Owens served as the head coach for Wausau East High School in Wausau, Wis. In the sum-mer of 2000, Owens coached the Wausau Tide Swimming Club and produced one Olympic trials qualifier. Owens swam collegiality at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point from 1996-1999 where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration. He received his Master’s degree from TCU in Kinesiology in 2004. Owens resides in Mankato.
