Six Hat Thinking

As a class, use Edward De Bono’s Six Hat Thinking to explore the issues raised in the BTN Koalas in

Decline story. Make your own coloured hat cut-outs and place on the floor. Students will take it in turns

Do you live near or in an area where koalas live? Get involved in koala conservation! Students will research

koala habitat and then design a school garden to increase the amount of habitat available to koalas. Find out

BtN: Episode 16 Transcript 13/06/17 Hi, I'm Nathan Bazley and this is BTN! Coming up today:

• Koala concerns: How logging and climate change might be hurting this cuddly Aussie icon.

This Week in News

This week has been a big one for news both here and overseas so let's catch up on all the stuff you need to know. To the UK first where there's been a dramatic result in last week's general election. It ended in something called a hung parliament. That's when neither of the main parties win enough seats to form government on their own. The Conservative Party did win the most seats but they didn't win more than half which is what they needed to automatically stay in power. However, it seems Theresa May will stay on as Prime Minister for now after agreeing to work with a smaller party to form a government. But it's not going to be easy. The PM's got some difficult negotiating to do as Britain leaves the European Union and now she's got even less support in parliament than before the election.

Back in Australia, authorities are taking extra precautions. to make sure people are safe after a man was killed and a woman taken hostage in Melbourne last week. Special police stormed in and saved the woman. Islamic State has claimed responsibility for attack.

900 Aussies have been honoured in the Queen's Birthday honours list.

The prestigious list honours Australians who do great things for the country from entertainers to scientists to business people and sports stars. Amongst those awarded were Ross Garnaut. He's an expert on the economy who's done a lot of work on things like climate change and energy. Professor Peter Coleman was recognised for breakthroughs in treating the flu and cancer. While Ken Freeman scored an award for his work in something that sounds pretty cool - galactic archaeology - which is all about tracing the history of the Milky Way! Plus, Cate Blanchett became the only female to receive a Companion of the Order of Australia award for what she's done for performing arts.

And a zoo in England was put into lockdown last week when a macaque, which is a type of monkey, managed to escape his enclosure and went for a bit of an adventure. Keepers eventually caught the cheeky monkey and took him back to his home, for now anyway.

Climate Agreement Withdrawal

INTRO: In other news. Recently the United States announced it's pulling out of the Paris Agreement a big plan designed to fight climate change. The news caused a massive reaction around the world. Why? Take a look. In America. MICHAEL BREEN, PROTESTOR: Every human being on earth lost today, but no one lost more than the American people. And around the world, news that the US would be pulling out of the Paris Agreement caused a sensation. MALCOLM TURNBULL, PRIME MINISTER: It is disappointing. We would prefer the United States to remain part of the agreement. But what's the Paris Agreement all about? And why do people care if the US remains a part of it? Well, the Paris Agreement, or Paris Climate Accord, was made back in 2015, when leaders around the world got together in Paris. And it was here, in Paris, they created a plan to fight climate change on a global scale (not just in Paris). This mission: stop average global temperatures rising 2 degrees by 2100. Two degrees doesn't sound like much, but experts say temps rising by any more could lead to more extreme weather, dangerously high sea levels, and food and water shortages.

So, to make sure that doesn't happen, countries pledged to limit the amount of greenhouse gases they produce. And rich countries said they'd give money to poorer countries to help them move towards renewable energy. Countries would also set their own targets and choose how to cut back, because leaders agreed one set of rules might not work for everyone. 195 countries agreed to it, including Australia, and America. But back then, Barack Obama was its leader. Now his successor, President Trump, has officially backed out. He said the deal wasn't fair to the US, would punish American businesses and lead to workers losing their jobs. DONALD TRUMP, US PRESIDENT: As someone who cares deeply about the environment, which I do, I cannot in good conscience support a deal that punishes the United States. But once the US leaves, they'll join Syria and Nicaragua as the only countries not involved. Nicaragua refused to sign because it believes the agreement isn't tough enough, and Syria is in the middle of a civil war. The US is the world's 2nd biggest polluter, and experts worry that their withdrawal will weaken the agreement, and make the targets harder to achieve. Nearly 6 out of 10 Americans are actually against the President's decision to pull out. And the rest of the countries involved in the agreement, say they're sticking to it. Including, China, the world's biggest polluter. It's already taken matters into its own hands making a deal with one big US state, California, to reduce emissions together. While the European Union says it plans to encourage other US states and big companies to do their bit as well. President Trump says he wants a new agreement to be made that won't affect American workers. But most of the world is still committed to the existing Paris Agreement, and to fighting against climate change together.

INTRO: Next today. Scientists are worried about the effect rising sea levels and deforestation are having on Australia's koala population. The iconic Aussie animal is

already listed as vulnerable, but some are concerned things will only get worse. Here's why. They're the Aussie icon that loves hanging in gum trees; sleeping, eating leaves and well, that's pretty much it. But this iconic marsupial might be starting to wake up to some big problems. Since 2012 koalas have been listed as a vulnerable species and since then their numbers have fallen further. Today there are fewer than 40,000 koalas left in the wild. Mainly because of things like dog attacks, cars and vanishing habitats. PAULA FLACK, NORTH EAST FOREST ALLIANCE: Koalas have declined by fifty per cent in the last fifteen to twenty years. Experts say the biggest problem koalas face is tree logging. While the timber industry does create jobs, every year heaps of koala homes are destroyed due to tree-clearing and more areas are scheduled for clearing, particularly in parts of south east Queensland where lots of koalas live. PAULA FLACK, NORTH EAST FOREST ALLIANCE: The very area they want to get in to absolutely hammer is the very area that is the highest koala habitat. So, koala conservationists are calling for an end to hardwood logging in those areas. But tree-clearing isn't the only problem koalas are facing right now. Recently a national koala conference was held and there, scientists discussed the effect climate change might be having on koala populations. One report has found 14 per cent of costal gum trees could be overtaken by salt water in the next 50 years. Here’s how it works: Rising tides or floods cause high levels of salt in the surrounding soil. This can increase the level of toxins in the leaves of gum trees, making them inedible for koalas. The trees can also wilt and die. It's something that's got a lot of conservationists worried. OISIN SWEENEY, NATIONAL PARKS ASSOCIATION: Pretty much every population within that stretch of coastline is in decline, some sharply so. But there are a few ideas people are looking at to protect koalas and their habitats in the future. In Queensland, some want to create a huge koala national park to take in all of the koalas that are at risk. Meanwhile in New South Wales, the government has proposed buying land away from the coastline where gum trees would be protected from salt water. GABRIELLE UPTON, NSW ENVIRONMENT MINISTER: The 10 million dollars we've purposed to acquiring land, habitat for koalas, is exactly for the purpose of making sure that we have the resources to be able to acquire lands to protect our koala population forever. While these are just a couple of the possible solutions, Conservationists want to make sure koalas are protected by any means necessary. So, this Aussie icon can continue doing what it does best eating leaves, sitting around and having long koala naps.

Uluru Street View

INTRO: Now, for the first-time kids will be able to walk around Uluru without actually travelling to the centre of Australia. Take a look. It's one of Australia's most iconic sites, Uluru. Located in the very centre of Australia, this rock is about 350 metres tall and thought to be around 300 million years old. White settlers first spotted Uluru in the 1800s and gave it the name Ayers Rock. But Aboriginal people had been living in the area thousands of years before that. And they already had their own name for this sacred site - Uluru. SAMMY WILSON, TRADITIONAL OWNER: Many people come to this place and often think it’s just a place, a site in the landscape. They don't realise it full of Tjukurpa, our ancient traditional law. The traditional owners of this land, the Anangu people, believe the rock was created by their ancestors. Spiritual beings like Kuniya, python people, and poisonous snake men. These holes are left by the spears of snake men when they attacked the Kuniya. You can see long slashes in the rock where it’s believed a Kuniya python woman did a ritual dance before fighting a Liru, a poisonous snake man, because he had wounded her nephew. Cracks in the stone are said to have been left by Kuniya's club when she hit the Liru. Kuniya and her nephew are still believed to be guardians of the waterhole and are resting there today. In 1985, the Australian Government returned Uluru to its traditional owners, the Anangu people. But because they believe their ancestral spirits still live there they've asked tourists not to climb the rock or film parts of it as a sign of respect. It's not banned though, so some tourists still do it. But now the traditional owners of the land are inviting people from all over the world to see and learn more about this incredible site without having to actually travel here. Thousands of 360 degree pictures of Uluru have been captured with this, a massive backpack with 15 cameras that takes pictures in every direction. Those pictures will then go up on Google's Street View website for anyone to explore. CASSEY WHITLOR, GOOGLE ENGINEER: What you'll see is still a panorama, but inside that panorama you’ll have points that you can click and those will start a story or a song or some ambience or something that give you more of a virtual reality experience. But according to traditional laws here some parts of Uluru are extra special places with significance that can only be understood by the Anangu elders. So, images of these areas

couldn't be included in the final experience. But the rest of this iconic rock and the surrounding lands have now been captured for generations to enjoy. The Northern Territory government hopes this project will encourage people from all around the world to come see Uluru for themselves. While its traditional owners, the Anangu people, hope it will show everyone why Uluru really is the heart of Australia.

Albinism

INTRO: Next up. The 13th of June is International Albinism Day. It's a rare condition that only affects around 1000 Australians. One of them is 13-year-old Xander. So, we asked him to tell us all about it.

Hello, my name is Xander Russell, I'm 13 years old and I'm on BTN to talk about Albinism Awareness Day. Albinism is where you have no melanin in your skin so that means your hair's not the usual colour. Your eyebrows aren't the usual colour, your eyelashes, your skin everything. Instead of freckles, you get moles and you are born with this you can't catch it and you can't stop it. When I was 11 weeks old my family noticed I had albinism. One day I got sunburnt and we went to the doctors and he said, "hmm he's got albinism". They just diagnosed it there and then. With albinism, you can never get tan, which means I'm always this white. So, I always have to take extra precautions, as well as wearing long sleeve shirts I also have to ensure that my skin is well protected and my eyes as well. This sunscreen helps me from burning cause if I burn it's not going to be that fun. These glasses are actually tinted because I have major problems with glare. I have 6/48 vision which means I'm not legally blind. I can still drive a car if I wanted too, but obviously I can't do that for another 3 years - because I'm 13. I can see colour I can see everything you'd want to see. So, you can still see McDonald’s, well your parents might be wishing you didn't see McDonald’s. I also have autism which is why I might have done a little bit of stuttering in my early speaking, But, who cares. I try to make it the best as possible. No one else in my family has the condition of albinism. I do have a new cousin but I haven't seen her yet so I can't really diagnose her myself. If she has got albinism, that would be cool we could be representatives together. But a) she’s a bit younger than me and there's a 99.9% chance she won't have it, and yes, I just made that calculation up myself. My class mates help me a lot, they help me with my work if I can't read it. I usually sit up the front the teachers are very supportive of me. I have never been treated differently, I have always been a good friend to everyone. I've never been bullied, which is good. I've got a huge fan base. I've been a representer of albinism in Australia ever since the day started in 2015. I started the presentations then I went on the radio then I went on the news, the next year I did some presentations at other schools. The message to people about albinism is if you're going through a hard time, well I say the best thing to do is stand up for yourself and say albinos are cool they're just like you.

Did You Know?

People with albinism usually have blue or grey eyes. But in some rare cases, their eyes can be pink or even red.

Sport

In sport, Rafael Nadal has taken the men's French Open crown for a record tenth time and he did it easily defeating Stan Wawrinka in straight sets. Nadal wasn't the only one making history though Jelena Ostapenko has become the first Latvian to win a grand slam. She came back from a set and three love down to defeat Simona Halen in the French Open Final.

It's a pretty amazing feat for the 20-year-old. She'd never even won a game at the French Open before this year! JELENA OSTAPENKO: I can't believe I'm Roland Garros champion and I'm only 20 years old. The win's done wonders for her ranking too. She's moved from 47th to 12th in the world!

Australia has been knocked out of the Champions Trophy. The Aussies were beaten by England in their final group match. STEVE SMITH, AUSTRALIAN CAPTAIN: Out of the tournament now so, that's never nice. I thought we let ourselves down a little bit today. They failed to win a single game and all of their matches were affected by wet weather.

Aussie Daniel Ricciardo has continued his run of good form with another podium finish at the Canadian Grand Prix. The Aussie placed third. Lewis Hamilton comfortably took out the win.

To AFL now, Carlton shocked the GWS to win in a nail biter 71 to 70. The Blues have had a rough season, while the Giants are considered premiership favourites. The Blues led at every break but it came right down to the wire. This behind with two minutes to go was enough to give them the four points. Tense!

And finally, the national championship of caneball was held in Canberra on the weekend! It's a cool looking sport that's like a cross between volleyball and soccer. It's super popular in South East Asia and it's been around for more than a thousand years!

INTRO: Okay finally today. You might remember last year we asked you to draw pictures of welcome for all of the young refugees and migrants that arrive here each year. Those pictures were for a special book that will be given for free to each family that comes here to start a new life. Next week, on the 20th of June, we will officially unveil the book that you helped create. But this week. we thought we'd tease you a bit by revealing the front cover design and introducing you to the talented young artist who drew it. This is Veron from Piara Waters in WA! VERON: Can I borrow one of your textas? CLASSMATE: Yeah, take one! And this is her winning drawing! Let's find out more about her. Why did you decide to enter? VERON: My teacher really wanted us to kind of like contribute, so we all drew some stuff and we sent it in. What does your picture represent? VERON: It just represents how like Australia's really amazing and it's really pretty. CLASSMATE: What do you think of my drawing? VERON: It's amazing, I love it. Do you like mine? CLASSMATE: Yeah, that's so good! You won! What was your reaction? VERON: I was actually at the airport, so I was really happy and I couldn't really believe it because thousands and thousands of people entered and I didn't think that I would win. What about your classmates? STUDENT 1: I was very excited that she won the front cover of it. STUDENT 2: Yeah, I agree, she did an awesome job! STUDENT 3: Yeah, her drawing was incredible! STUDENT 4: Yeah, I think she did really well! And your teacher?

TEACHER: I was so excited when I received the email from BTN saying that one of my students' work was chosen for the front cover of the Welcome Book. I couldn't believe it out of thousands of entries that her work was chosen! How does it feel to have your design on the front cover? I feel really proud and like I'm happy that I can show my love of Australia with other refugees and migrants. What's your message to kids who have just arrived here? Have fun because Australia's such an amazing country and it's like we're all part of a family.
