+

Is the current way we(you) are doing youth ministry effective?

+

My hunch is that you are here today because you arent sure?In my experience it seemed that the things I was doing with youth often took a back seat to the rest of their livesLets dive into some of the hard questions and then see what some of yours are.3

What is effective youth ministry andhow do you know if its effective?

+

How do we know if the seeds weve planted have taken root?So many unknowns. Do we just count kids? Get paid well? Work in a big church? Have lots of resources? Etc.

4

Have we abandoned the ministry of Christ to satisfy our own needs?

+

Our need for relationship? To feel validated? To see results? As long as we see smiling faces.

5

Have we stepped away from deep, faith-nurturing relationships and relied on the ministry of bells and whistles?

+

Are we cruise directors? This is so exhausting.6

Is there a better way?

+

A deeper way to imagine relationships

Known John 17:6-10

6I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; 8for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.

+

Listen for the word know in the passage and what it means.9

Known John 17:6-10

9I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 10All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them.

Known John 17:24-2624Father, I desire that those also, whom You have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. 26I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.

+

KNOWN Some translations say phaneros which means manifest - Imagine the closeness that Jesus and the disciples had. The brokenness they had. The meals they shared. The vulnerability they must have had.The word known shows up in John 49 times, more than any other NT book.

17

I wonder

Are we as leaders in youth ministry only able to provide temporary vulnerability?

+

18

I wonder

Does the temporariness of ourrelationships with young people teach them that relationships are temporary? Even our relationship with God?

+

19

I wonder

If we could help families, congregations and their leaders understand the significance of developmental relationships, might our young people have a deeper sense of their relationship with God for the long term?

+

20

I wonder

What would it look like to help our families with vulnerability and developmental relationship?

+

21

I wonder

How can our young people experience these kinds of relationships with people of all ages?

+

22

I wonder

How might our worship experiences model vulnerability and authentic relationship?

+

23

I wonder

How can our acts of service and justice lead us into more authentic, long term relationships with our neighbor?

+

A way forward

Foster deep, developmental relationships within families- slow, deliberate, connecting
