Participants

We handed out our questionnaires to 20 people: 10 males and 10 females. However their ages categories were not even. This is because our documentary is aimed more towards younger people because tattooing is more popular in the younger generation.

Do you have any tattoos?

Only 30% of participants have at least one tattoo. The number of tattoos they had ranged from 1-12, and all of them got their first tattoo between the ages of 16 and 19. The legal ages to get inked is 18, but 3 of our participants had got under the needle beforehand. This shows that having a tattoo is an admirable feature and the younger generation are very interested in having them and see them as a fashion statement. Participants without tattoos gave said that they didn’t have tattoos for several reasons. Some had a dislike towards tattoos or where not bothered, whereas 3 said that they have never got a tattoo because they can’t decide what to get.

Do you think tattoos have an effect on society?

85% said that tattoos do have affect society. They gave the following reasons:“people are now open to diversity”“it used to be frowned upon when women got them, but tattoos are embraced nowadays”“makes people fit into groups”“it affects employability”The most common of all comments was that people with tattoos get judged or put into stereotypes by others. This shows that society is still not fully accepting the culture of body art.

Words associated with tattoos

On our questionnaire, we asked our participants to circle words from a selection of phrases that found were related to tattooing from our primary research. This question was a good way to understand how people’s opinions vary and how people are split on their views on tattoos.

Summary

We found the results very helpful in making decisions on what questions to ask in our documentary, and what we would like to interview people about. As a documentary closed related to society, a questionnaire was a very important tool because we can ensure that our documentary links directly and truthfully to the opinion of the public.
