Questionnaire: • In my questionnaire I included seven questions to try and find out more about the target audience for the magazine I hope to produce. These questions are both quantitative and qualitative giving me a range of information and results to interpret. I used quantitative questions so I could take away a percentage from the data and qualitative questions helped me to understand the opinions and preferences of the people who filled in my questionnaire. • I asked a group of ten people who filled in my questionnaire were ages from sixteen to eighteen years, both male and females. I used this selection because it fits with the target audience that I aim to influence with my magazine.

Analysis

• From this result I can see that the majority of people said that they would buy Kerrang! Magazine over the other two. Nine people chose Kerrang! Because it is the most popular Rock/alternative magazine that is currently being published. It is also a lot more commercial compared to NME magazine which is from a big publisher but perhaps more formal. One person however chose Q magazine, possibly because they have a knowledge of the music magazine market and prefer the slightly more formal type of magazine, such as Q.

Analysis

• Out of the people who answered this questionnaire, no one was willing to pay £5 for a music magazine. This is because music magazines currently on the market are all less than this amount. One person said the other extreme which was 50p. This may be because they either have a lack of knowledge of the price ranges of music magazines or that they are restricted for money. Other factors may have effected this piece of data. The majority of people said £1.50 or £2 which is the average amount that is currently paid for these magazines anyway.

Analysis

• No one out of the people I asked to complete my questionnaire said that they never go to concerts/gigs. This is because I specifically asked people who I knew had some form of interest in the genre and concerts. The other results did vary because some people may not have enough money to go to concerts but it implies that they would go if they had the money. People also said they go to concerts occasionally or all the time. This would help me to know to include information about gigs and concerts and festivals in my finalised music magazine.

Analysis

• I know from my research that Kerrang Magazine, for example, is published every week. However the correlation between question 1 and question 5 shows that they still would prefer it to be published every fortnight. 60% of respondents said this and 30% of people said weekly. However the majority of people said fortnightly which shocked me because it is not the typical time between issues of a music magazine.

3) Which Bands/Artists would you expect to see in your chosen genre of magazine?

• There were a few main bands and artists that were mentioned by the ten respondents of my questionnaire. These were; Paramore, You Me At Six, All Time Low, A Day To Remember and Linkin Park. All of these artists are relevant to the genre which I chose, which is alternative rock. They are all popular which is why the participants would have mentioned them in the questionnaire. Other people included artists such as Coldplay, Shinedown, Sleeping with the Sirens, Bring Me The Horizon etc. which all still represented the genre that I chose. However some artists were mentioned that don’t fit into the genre which were Adele, Jessie J, Papa Roach, Rizzle Kicks and B.O.B. these would have been said due to personal preferences instead of which artists would be typical of the alternative rock genre magazine.

6) Which genre of music do you listen to the most?

• I asked the ten people which music they listen to the most and they came back with the majority saying Rock/Pop. This suggests that everyone I did ask to complete the survey prefers the type of genre that my magazine represents. This supports the fact that my target audience would prefer this genre as my magazine.

7) What would you expect to see in a music magazine?

• The results that I obtained from the questionnaire showed that they all had very similar ideas to what would be included in a typical music magazine. The most popular suggestions were; New album or single releases, tour dates and gigs, interviews, reviews, recommendations, ticket and stories about the artists or bands. This will give me help into choosing what to include in my magazine.
