ANALYSIS OF QUESTIONNAIRE

RESULTS

Page 2: Questionaire and results

15 out of 17 of the people who took my questionnaire answered a simple “yes” to this question. This shows that the crime drama thriller is an extremely popular genre, resulting in a successful amount of responses. This means the responses I received are varied, and therefore very reliable.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN THE CRIME/ACTION/THRILLER GENRES?

WHAT FEATURES OF A TRAILER MAKE YOU WANT TO WATCH THE

FILM?

The most vital features of a trailer which will attract the most people appears to be the actors which are featured in the film. This is a slight throwback for us since we are unable to use real celebrities in our trailer.

However, the second vital feature is including interesting and gripping clips from the movie. In order to meet this audience’s need, I need to make sure I include only the most intense and interesting clips that we film to make the trailer gripping and enticing to the audience.

The third most popular feature is funny moments in the trailer, this would usually only occur with comedy films, and the fact our trailer is going to be dark, mysterious, and serious, including funny moments will take the edge, which will attract our audience, away.

Scary moments and reviews were also popular which ties in well with our genre. There are going to be quite intense moments in our trailer which will add an element of horror, which, according to this research, will entice the audience even more. To appeal to the audience who like to see reviews in the trailer, I can incorporate short quotes and a star rating which will not only look more professional but will also entice the audience into watching the film.

WHAT IS YOUR GENDER?

Due to the fact 7 more females than males took part in my questionnaire, the results are bound to be more revolved around the preferences of the female audience. However, our intended trailer is going to be similar to ones such as Spring Breakers, The Runaways, Thirteen, and the overall coming of age genre, which is generally aimed at the young female market. Furthermore, the fact we gained more female results than male is a benefit to our research as we are able to get a wider perspective of opinions and information from our target audience.

WHAT IS YOUR AGE?

13 out of 17 (76.5%) of the people who took my questionnaire were in the age range of 14-19 years old. This is the age range which we are aiming our package at, which makes it extremely useful to gather the information and opinions of the target audience and will make our final product more concise and specific to the audience’s requirements, this is the same situation as the previous question.

WHAT FILMS WOULD YOU CONSIDER A

CRIME/THRILLER/DRAMA?I asked this question to find out what kind of films the target audience would think is a conventional film to the specified genre. The results were quite varied with films I think can be easily linked to my intended product, but also films which do not particularly follow the same themes. This shows that the genre is very broad and can contain many different themes and story lines within itself.

The film which seemed to be the most conventional to the genre is Spring Breakers with three people considering it a crime/thriller/drama. This is one of the films which is most similar to what we intend to produce and so this result is beneficial in that our target audience will also think of our trailer as conventional. Other suggested films that are extremely similar to ours are Project X and The Runaways in particular.

Other films which the audience related to crime/thriller/drama is The Sweeny, The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Godfather, Man On A Ledge, Law Abiding Citizen, Enemy of the State, Gangster Squad, Seven, Pulp Fiction, Taken, Welcome to the Punch, Jack Reacher, Now You See Me, Hanna, The Place Beyond The Pines, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. All of these films consist of conventional elements that are expected of a film of this genre, with most of them appearing in our trailer. This includes, drugs, alcohol, weapons such as guns, antagonists and protagonists, violence, and a lot more.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE GENRES OTHER THAN CRIME OR

DRAMA? E.G SCI-FI, HORROR, COMEDY…

I decided to fi nd out other genres in which the target audience would be interested in, to gain a better understanding of the overall ethos of the audience. I wasn’t sure the audience would be fl exible in the genres they liked or not at all versatile to other types of fi lm.My results show that the majority of my audience were most interested in horror, which is easily relatable to the crime/thril ler genre and also refl ects the results of the previous question where the audience would be enticed to watch a fi lm if there was an element of horror in my trailer. The interest in comedy/rom coms has also occurred again.Other genres include action/adventure, which is a genre strongly related to crime/thril ler, since these fi lms usually contain some elements of action and adventure, with protagonists and antagonists. Two people also suggested thril lers, psychological horror, and sci-fi , which are all sub-genres of action/adventure/horror.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES A CRIME DRAMA UNIQUE FROM

OTHER GENRES?The results to this question showed that the audience can differentiate a crime/drama/thriller from any genre film in many ways. A lot people agreed that the tension involved gives a very unique atmosphere, where the audience cannot only see there is tension but feel it, and feel involved with the action, for example, they are able to join in and figure out who a killer is, or work out which victim may be next, and actually get involved in the action rather than just watch it unfold, making it more interesting. Some people said that they enjoy the plot twists which the genre has to offer, as this only adds to the tension and creates enormous speculation throughout the film. Overall the results showed the audience like the mysterious, intense, unique atmosphere, and in particular the parts that involve drugs and violence. Two people responded with extremely specific answers which enabled me to get a rough reflection on what the other respondents mean by their brief comments. The first states and they like “The fantastically well thought out and put together story lines, that allow us to understand the characters within the story and their emotions within the situation. Also I am very fond of the series of events commonly shown within the genre, such as fights and murders, as I find these grippingly interesting and incredible” the second person states that they think “Very few films can pass of as a good crime drama. I like them to be long and slow moving so the audience can piece together the clues at the same time as the characters. One of the favourites is the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo trilogy and how that all comes together over 3 films.

WHAT ARE YOUR INTERESTS AND HOBBIES?

In order to find out the general psychographics of my audience to try to appeal to them more in my promotional packages, I asked them personal questions regarding their interests outside of film analysis.

What seemed to be the most popular interests were; socializing, such as Skyping, going out, and going to parties. Films/cinema/Television also seemed to be a recurring interest, as well as music, both listening and playing guitar. The audience also seemed to generally enjoy sport, reading, and performing arts/theatre, with more specific interests like drawing, playing video games, eating, studying media, writing scripts, filming and editing self-shot clips, agriculture, cooking, animals, and attending film premiers. The vast range of different interests show my target audience are not only focused on one or two particular interests but a whole variety. All interests that were stated contain some form of creativity, in particular script writing and playing guitar, as well as energetic and outgoing hobbies, like horse riding, playing football, and performing arts. There were also hobbies that were very much focused on film, such as going to the cinema/watching films, studying the topic of media, going to the theatre, attending film premiers, even creating their own scripts, films, and doing their own editing. This therefore proves that the audience’s opinions are more valued since most of them have experience and knowledge of film which I may not posses, and I am able to use this in my trailer.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF A CRIME DRAMA TRAILER?

Despite asking the audience what they would like to see, I thought it would be useful to know what they would expect to see, and find out if the elements were the same. The expected conventions I picked up from the feedback, which also appears in the question asking what the audience want to see, includes; interesting story lines, plot twists, action, a tense, mysterious and unique atmosphere, gripping moments with a plot that keeps the audience alert and interested at all times, mise en scene such as blood, violence, drugs, fights, crime, an antagonist and a protagonist, fast paced editing, a moral at the end of the story, and problem throughout that the audience need to solve.

After finding out what both the wants, and expectations, of my target audience are, I must relate back to this during creating my trailer and apply the things I have found out in order to make it as enticing as possible.

The table and graph shown previously show the rankings of what the audience thought particular props would be conventional appearing in an action/drama/thriller trailer.I intentionally included props that are not conventional to ensure the target audience knew what to expect in a fi lm of this genre. The least popular props, as expected, was chocolate and bunnies. These are both things related to innocence, children, immaturity and happiness, whereas a crime trailer must possess elements of violence, aggression, and mystery. The props that I expected would be the most conventional are things like; guns, drugs, cigarettes, cars, and alcohol. This gave us an even clearer insight into what the include in our trailer since the question asked is so specifi c. What I need to do now is plan to add these conventional elements into my trailer.
