QUESTION NUMBER 33 OR 34
The following are the short stories and drama studied in the Literature component in English Language:
1. QWERTYUIOP - Vivien Alcock
2. The Fruitcake Special - Frank Brennan3. Gulp and Gasp - John Townsend
Choose any one of the stories and answer the question below.
Using details from the story you have studied,
1. Write about the happy or sad event in the story and How the characters react to the event.
I choose the story QWERTYUIOP and the happy event is when Lucy is offered a job in Ross and
Bannister’s. This is a happy event because Lucy has no confidence of the college that sent her off. Lucy
knows that she faces a keen competition from others who are qualified than her. She is uncertain and
has wondered who in their right mind will choose her. She needs the job to be able to improve herfinancial’s status. So, when she is offered the job, it is a happy event. She reacts to the event by turning
up early at the office. With a strong determination, she manages to hold on to the job in spite of the
haunting of the typewriter by Miss Broome.
2. Write about an important moral issue in the short story. Give reasons too.
I would choose the story QWERTYUIOP. A moral issue in the story which I think is important is
that if we want to be successful, we must work towards it. Lucy Beck wants very much to be successful
in her job. She needs the job to be able to improve her financial status. She has been told taht she is not
likely to get a job. Thus she does not have much self confidence. When she is threatened by the spirit of
Miss Broome in the typewriter, she refuses to give in to her demands and leave the office. Lucy is
determined to retain her job and so she works towards it. I feel this issue is important because we need
to apply to our lives too. If we want to be successful, we must works towards it.

DRAMA: GULP AND GASP
1. Which of the male characters in the drama is the most interesting?
The male character that I find the most interesting in the drama is Lord Septic. Through his
words and actions, and his orders to his servant Crouch, they show him to be an interesting but foul
character.
He is the nasty owner of the railway station. He is nasty cruel and evil villian. The words that he
says are foul, horrid, filthy, very nasty and angry words which describe him to a T. He gets and feels
angry when things do not go his way. He thinks of nothing but power, fame, money which he is just a
step away. He tells Crouch to tie Rose the blind flower girl to the railway track, especially when he hears
the midnight express moving on the track.
He takes advantage of others. He married his wife Cora Septic for her arms – her money
because she owns a gun factory. He is also sadistic, power crazy and ambitious.
