Technology

We tried out many different types of technology before deciding which one we would use in our project. For example, during our preliminary task we tried out school cameras and i-movie and then decided that we wanted to use a better camera and more professional editing programme. We then went about trying out different version of these technologies to compare them and decide whether there was a better option for our project.

TechnologyAnother element of technology that we took under consideration was lighting. We spent a long time discussing our different options for lighting before deciding what type of lighting we would use for our important scenes. We tried out several different types of lights and looking at what effect they would have before deciding on two Fresnel lights and a Birdie.

However, on the day of filming, we decided not to use the Fresnel lights, as the Birdie was more effective on its own.

Technology

• We also tried out Live Type for our titles/credits. At first we did not like Live Type, but after watching tutorials on how to use it, we started to get a hang of it and ended up using it for our titles. Watching the tutorials really helped us learn how to use this technology.

• We attempted to use Garage Band to create our own music for the film and title sequence, but after trying to create decent music for a long time, we decided that music websites, like YouTube, already had effective sounds and music that worked better with our footage than anything we had personally created. However we did edit and change parts of the music with picked via Final Cut.

Which technologies were best?

• The first technology change we made was from the school cameras to a Panasonic Lumix HD GH1. We did this because the school cameras do not have give great quality, whereas the Panasonic Lumix HD GH1 are better quality. We decided the change in camera was important for our project as we wished to achieve a better quality image. We took some time to learn how to use the camera best, in order to get better quality, like exploring all the modes and effects.

Which technologies were best?

• We then decided that we would use Final Cut instead of i-Movie as it allowed us to edit our film more specifically and create different effects like the ‘sin city’ effect. In order to use Final Cut effectively we asked our teacher to show us how the basic features worked and then watched tutorials on YouTube to find out how the more complex effects and features worked.

How have new technologies changed media production?

• Due to more professional camera, lighting and editng equipment, ordinary people have been able to create media that (although may not look exactly like professional films) are getting increasingly closer to being professional media, at least in footage quality.
