Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?

For my music magazine, I had to come up with an idea that would stand out from already existing

R&B/Hip-Hop magazines, and that would also attract my chosen target audience.

FreebieWith my magazine, I will give out a free track of the chosen new and

upcoming artist of that issue (a free track would be given out in every issue from a different artist). I believe that this was a good idea as it separates my magazine from other magazine with the same genre, as it promotes artists that have just stepped onto the music scene, giving the publicity, and this idea also attracts my audience as they would want something for free, especially music where they would not violate any piracy laws. The good thing with this idea, is that my audience has already seen these artist debut single on TV, so they would have a feel who this artist is, plus BEAT Magazine only shows the best new artists, so my audience would know that they track would be amazing. Also with this idea my magazine would take full advantage of my publisher. In this day and age, people no longer listen to CD’s, we now download music, and so with my publisher’s use of technology, my audience would able to use QR codes, which would lead them to iTunes to get their free track. The track would only be free when using this single-use code. People who don’t buy the magazine would have to pay full price for that track. QR codes will defiantly attract my audience as it is quick and easy to use and access the track.

Audience Participation

With my magazine, I have allowed my audience to get involved as much as possible. One way in which my magazine does this is through competitions. The main competition in my magazine is where my audience could submit original song lyrics, poems or anything creative to BEAT Magazine, in the hope of winning sold out concert tickets and also having their own page in the magazine, where they can write reviews, talk about their opinion latest music celebrity gossip, etc- But it has to be totally related to my musical genre. This both addresses and attracts my audience as, the competitions would be revolved around the interests of the audience and it also gives them a chance to showcase their creativity.

Colour schemeMy colour scheme for my magazine is very welcoming for my

audience. Red, white and black are very bold colours on their own, but together they complement each other very well. I believe that these colours represent this musical genre very well as it is quite hard, but welcoming as said before.

Fonts and LanguageWhen looking at fonts, I totally had my audience in mind, as they way they perceive my magazine and accept it would be based on the font. If the font was crazy and wild, they would not take my magazine seriously as that font does not represent R&B/Hip hop in any way. So I decided to make my writing quite big and bold so it would be easy to read and understand. Also, I wanted my font to make an overall statement that my magazine is something new and fresh like its name.Throughout my magazine I have tried to keep language consistent, whether on my front cover, contents page or DPS. I have written in a way that is youthful and fresh (using slight colloquialism) but I still kept it formal to ensure that everything was understandable, and could translate well to other people who may buy my magazine and not be apart of the chosen target audience age.

Models and clothingFor my magazine, I have decided to make my models relate a lot to

my audience, unlike other magazines where there was/is a big gap between the celebrity and the audience. And that gap made it seem that the audience could never be like celebrity, bringing on low self-esteem. But with my magazine, I wanted to give the audience a sense of hope, in which they could feel like they could become success full in what they do. I done this by making my models in magazine (especially on my contents page) dress like trending young individuals. They are wearing very affordable clothes that regular people (people of the social class I’m trying to reach) can buy.

Feedback

The feedback I got from task 10 was very constructive in the sense that I was able to see my strengths and my weakness where in my projects and I was able to see what worked and what didn’t and what I need to change. Most of the feedback I got was quite positive, many people commented on my blogger and said “The colour scheme works well and the masthead is clear and bold. You photography is good” and “The positioning works well”. However so people said that “The main cover line should maybe be a different colour to the other cover lines” and “I think your writing for the teasers are too small. And the font is too simple”. The way I adapted my work to become better was to make my teaser bigger to stand out and also to fill that space. However, I was told that the font was too simple but I didn’t think it was, so I didn’t change the font but I added an effect to the writing on my front cover to make the writing stand out so it does not look boring.
