Examples of popular media institutions

Why is important to identify and choose the correct institution to create and distribute a film?

Audience: The audience have expectations of certain institutions therefore if they are aware of other popular films distributed by a particular institution, then they are likely to take interest and watch another film by them due to their trust in the company. Loyal audiences are also likely to watch films produced by the company if they regularly watch films distributed by the same company. It is therefore important to choose the correct institution according to audiences as we are aiming our thriller at audiences aged 15 and over therefore, audiences watching our film should be within that age category which means the company must be a company that distributes films at the older audiences unlike, for example, ‘Disney’, which is prominent for distributing films aimed at the younger audiences. Industry reputation: The industry reputation is extremely important as the audience are more willing to watch films that are distributed by a popular company that has a good reputation within the film industry. However, if the institution has a bad reputation, the audience are unlikely to watch the film due to previous negative experiences they may have had. Therefore, it is important to choose the correct institution that has a good reputation for film making drawing the audiences attention and encouraging them to watch the film.

It is important to identify and choose the correct institution to distribute my thriller film due to significant factors of association including genre, audience and industry reputation. Genre: Genre is important because if a certain distributor has made many popular thriller films, the audience are likely to watch a new thriller distributed by that popular institution if the audience have been previously satisfied by other films and gained enjoyment from them. Therefore, it is important to choose the correct institution as the company should be known for producing various other thriller films so the audience are aware of what to expect.

Who would you choose to distribute your thriller and why?

After researching various film production companies, my group and I have decided to choose ‘New Line Cinema’ to distribute our thriller film ‘Insanity’ as it is a well established company that has been set up since 1967. Therefore, the company has a good reputation for distributing excellent films that fit their genre and meet the audiences expectations, such as ‘Annabelle’, ‘The Conjuring’ and ‘The Hobbit’ which are all unique and increasingly popular films within the film industry appealing to various audiences of both genders. This makes ‘New Line Cinema’ popular as they are successful on an international scale, especially in the US and England. ‘New Line Cinema’ are also popular for making films which are of the thriller genre, for example, ‘Se7en’ and ‘The Butterfly Effect’ which are popular thriller films that are highly rated by the wider audience including people of various age groups. These particular films are also psychological thrillers.highlighting that ‘New Line Cinema’ are not only prominent for distributing thriller films but they are also popular for distributing psychological thrillers which has encouraged my group and I to choose ‘New Line Cinema’ as ours take on similar sub-genre conventions. Furthermore, we have chosen them due to other factors including the positive reputation within the film industry and high popularity amongst international audiences.

Compare your thriller to existing thrillers made by this institution

The thriller film ‘Se7en’ made by the institution ‘New Line Cinema’ is similar to our thriller ‘Insanity’ as it is of the same genre as my thriller, which is psychological. It also involves similar content such as murder which is committed in ‘Se7en’ by the antagonist on various victims. Further an anti hero who murders the antagonist, which is also similarly committed in ‘Insanity’, as the anti-hero also murders the antagonist. Also, the characters involved are similar as ‘Se7en’ has a protagonist and anti-hero who try to find the antagonist and prevent him from killing the victims which can be compared to ‘Insanity’ which involves a Professor who has good intensions as he tries to find the problem associated with the female victims state of mind and solve it.

The thriller film ‘The Butterfly Effect’ which is distributed by the film production company ‘New Line Cinema’ is similar to my thriller film ‘Insanity’ as both films have a psychological narrative and have similar themes. The storylines revolve around a main character who suffer from psychological issues and has consistent flashbacks into the past. Therefore, my thriller film ‘Insanity’ can be compared to ‘The Butterfly Effect’ as both thrillers maintain similarities involving the main character.
