Question 3

Q3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? Who would distribute our film? Due to the context and content of our thriller film, we would appeal to a mainstream cinema audience. For example, Vue or ODEON cinemas are the most likely cinema for the distribution of ‘The Unseeable.’ These mainstream cinemas are predominately aimed at a younger film interested audience, showing the trending and most current films. Which they can be sure will get a good reception. After researching on ODEON and Vues’ website; I found a few thriller films available to currently watch. One example is ‘The Divergent Series: Insurgent’ the film available at a wide variety of times during the day; the majority of times in the evening, after work or school which allows younger people to be able to go and watch the films. Thrillers and action films seem to be a staple at the mainstream cinemas, catching the attention of young audiences and securing the majority of that market. Vue is seen as a mainstream cinema, but also is specialist to certain aspects of film. (See Right) With the additions of streaming live Operas, Theatres, Museums and Bollywood, which are seen to be aimed at more niche audiences. I don’t think out thriller would fit into this bracket as thriller films are more catered to the mainstream cinema industry. Our film would not be suited specifically to a niche audience in an independent cinema; their audience demographic are often an older audience, into more sophisticated viewing, or specific niche audiences. The prices of independent cinemas are usually more expensive. For example, the film ‘While We’re Young’ is available to students at Cinema City for the price of £10, but at ODEON tickets cost £8.20 for a student. This is another reason why our film would be more suited to mainstream cinema as it’s more affordable to our audience. Our film would be aimed at mainstream cinemas, such as ODEON, and targeting a young audience demographic, similar to our own age, 16 to 20, so it can be affordable and easily accessible to the audience.

Q3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Although you can categorise our film as something mainly distributed to mainstream cinema, there are alternative

options to this which we could explore. Cinema City may be an option for us as a distribution opportunity.

Our film may not seem appropriate to the main listing of Cinema City's schedule, however, Cinema City are known on their ability to showcase independently created, small-cast, low budget, productions. They would therefore be

able to show our film as an alternative to their usual screenings.

Alternatives:

Due to mainstream, multiplex cinema distribution having to have a high budget; smaller cinemas like Cinema City could be more financially preferable for ‘The Unseeable’ distribution.

Cinema City have already shown independent and low-budget films with a small cast, such as ‘This Is England’ and ‘Somers Town’ both directed by Shane Meadows. Similar to our own film production;

having a small cast and low budget.‘Cinema Plus’ is Cinema City’s educational scheme; it has an obligation to help young

filmmakers in education to have to opportunity to produce films (See Left). This would be a way that we can access Cinema

City’s scheme,as AS Level students interested in film, we could distribute to

Cinema City, meeting their policies dedicated to the education and introduction

of young people into the film industry.

Q3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Television Distribution:

Digital Distribution:

Our Distribution Company:

Being able to access platforms like Netflix and YouTube, allowing our film to reach a wider span of our young audience demographic. The sites are easy to access and view in the comfort of the home; allowing the film to be part of a social occasion as well as a cinema trip. Recent thrillers like ‘Gone Girl’ have used the power of social media in order to promote their film and get the message out to their audience demographic; using their Twitter, FaceBook and website advertisement. The film shown at mainstream cinemas aimed at young adults; social media is therefore one of the best ways they could promote and reach the audience with information of their film.

Working Title wouldn't be an adequate company to package our film; our film appealing to a more mainstream market. Universal also wouldn’t be suitable; due to them working with high-budget productions.

A film company which is smaller and based in the UK, like the British Film Institute, would be more willing to package a film like ours; with a low-budget, unknown cast and could support us as you film-makers.

The BBC provide viewing of thrillers both live scheduled and on the ‘BBC iPlayer.’ There’s a variety of thriller TV series available and scheduled, the

majority shown on BBC 4. ‘The Unseeable’ wouldn’t be broadcast on TV as these BBC 4 shows are

aimed at an older, niche audience. Our thriller is more suited to a mainstream cinema, our young audience demographic isn’t the same as

who BBC 4 aim their programmes to.

There are now multiple platforms online which are brilliant for word-of-mouth promotion for films like our own.
