Similar Conventions

1. Close up shot of lead singer highlights his emotion. We used this when actors were alone in the later stages of the music video to also convey the strong emotion that backs our narrative.

2. The use of Flashbacks. Many Indie artists involve flashbacks within their music videos. Looking at retrospect events is key part of our media product and we enforced this using existing old footage to add onto the emotion of our piece.

3. The medium angle shot, the most common shot utilized throughout our music video in order to highlight props such as the acoustic guitar and the location of the outdoors. This scene also features a cross dissolve transition; we used lots of cross dissolves in order to build upon the flow of our piece.

4. The first shot acts as an establishing shot revealing the outdoors. A common setting used in most Indie culture music videos. We in turn also used the outdoors to reflect our genre.

5. Mise-en-scene. In ‘Some nights’ they focus primarily on guitars and pianos. In our music video we put emphasis on the acoustic guitar, relevant to the genre iconography of the Indie sub-culture.

6. In this group shot you can see the three main members of F.U.N singing to the chorus. Similarly shot our artists with a medium shot when they sing the chorus in our media product.

How we adapted these conventions

7. We also used close up shots to reflect emotion however did not use extreme close ups. Instead we used silhouette shots which gave a great effect as you could see and hear the lyrics with the contrast raised on Adobe premiere to place emphasis on the lips moving.

8. We also used flashbacks in our video. However we adapted our shots and edited them to be black and white in the video effects tab on Adobe software. We felt this gave the shots a more authentic look and make the narrative clear that they were taken in the present and that the colour reflects the present.

9. We also used cross dissolves transitions. As our song is about loss we used the transitions to signify this theme with our actress disappearing, this further clarifies the narrative adds an effective stylistic device to our media product.

10. Instead of having actors in our establishing shot, we left in open having the water as a point of reflection. Another key theme in our music video comparative to many other Indie videos such as Mumford and Sons song ‘The cave’.

11. Unlike ‘Some nights’ we placed strong emphasis on our props especially that of the acoustic guitar. It acts as the main instrument in our piece and also reflects the Indie genre well.

12. Instead of using a group shot we used a two shot without instruments in order for our actors to reflect their inner emotions to the audience.
