Question 1

Once placed into a group of 2, I and my partner decided to create a music video with the genre of rock. The song we finally decided on was “Nickleback – Rockstar” and this is because it is a well-known rock song which many people would know and enjoy listening too. The location we decided on was 3 different ones, these being Salford City College, Eccles campus, Manchester City town centre and Light Oaks park in Salford. The reason these 3 locations were chosen were because of the location they were in as they were local to me and my partner. They also were filled with lots of people which we needed because of the way we was constructing our video. These locations also made the video more interesting as a variety of backgrounds were to be used within the music video. The locations also are effective as they are places that our target audience would visit and therefore this means that the audience can relate to the video. We decided that the people taking part in our music video should be in casual everyday clothing to make the video look more realistic and interesting. No props will be used as this won’t make the video realistic as props are not used in everyday life. We also decided this because of the genre we picked too. This is because appearance to rock singers isn’t their main concern and that’s why we kept it simple. It was also easier to film as our music video has a random selection of people in it and therefore if we had to plan outfits and costumes this would have been more time consuming for both myself and my partner. At the beginning of the music video is an opening title introducing the song. The front used is simple yet effective as it indicates what will be played. The reason we kept the font simple is due to the genre of the song because rock singers focus more on the song they are singing than the editing of a video. By having a simple opening title it also doesn’t take away the attention from the rest of the video. The text is also simple so that the target audience is able to read it and see what it says clearly without any difficulties. The camera angles of the music video vary from all different kinds. Every camera shot cuts from one another as this was quick and easy to-do and make the camera shot clean and easy to view the next one. The camera shots themselvs vary from close-ups, medium shots and long shots. The camera shots that are close up show the people in the music video singing the lyrics as though they themselves are ‘rockstars’ in their own music video. This then might apply to the auidnce that anyone can be a ‘rockstar’ if they wanted to be as a famous rock song has invoved the local people of Manchester in their video. The medium shots show the people involved I nthe music video more as you can now see their outfits which now make the video more personal to the target audience because they realise that it is just

local people being involved. This is effective and intreguing because not many other videos use this in their own music videos. My music video breaks the conventions of a linear narrative and this is because the video doesn’t follow a story throughout as it cuts to many different people in different locations singing. This is because myself and my partner wanted the video to be joyful and happy to watch.

Since the video cuts from different scenes the video is fragmentated. Since the video is

fragmentated each character is introduced when the scene cuts to a different one. No special effects were used as this didn’t fit with the genre convemtions because the rock genre is a simple yet effected genre as they concentrate more on the music than the presentation if their videos.
