Dear Friends:
Welcome to the 32st annual Smithsonian Craft Show, proudly produced by the Smithsonian Women’s Committee, now in its 48th year. The show, in its own unique style, tells America’s story through the art of craft. It is always a special event and this year it is exciting because the 2014 Craft Show has two honorary chairs, both visionary artists in the world of crafts, both with works in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery: Wendell Castle and Albert Paley. We thank them for their help with this year’s show. They are particularly suited to this year’s theme, the Quest for the Best.
The Craft Show is an all-volunteer effort by the Women’s Committee. An integral part of the Smithsonian, the Committee returns the net proceeds from the Craft Show to the Smithsonian in the form of competitive grants. Over the years, this remarkable group has given more than $10 million to the Smithsonian — an impressive record. We are grateful for all the Committee does to help the Smithsonian advance its research, education and outreach mission, and to spark the learning in everyone.
With its many special events, including an online auction, a raffle, lectures, food and drink, the show is engaging and fun. It is a coveted venue for craft artists from many disciplines and we welcome the 123 who have been accepted into this year’s event, including 23 first-time exhibitors.
Congratulations to the president of the Committee, Emily B. Willey, who has given so much of her time, talent, and resources. Special thanks and congratulations to the chairs of this year’s outstanding show, Ruth Conant and Mary Beth Nethercutt. We applaud the jurors, the judges, the award donors, and our business and foundation supporters for their generous commitments to the Craft Show and the Smithsonian.
And finally, many thanks to all of the dedicated Smithsonian Women’s Committee members who have worked tirelessly to assemble this masterful display of creative arts, a Quest for the Best indeed.
Enjoy the show!
Sincerely,
FROM THE SECRETARY

32nd Annual Smithsonian Craft Show 7
On behalf of the Smithsonian Women’s Committee, thank you for supporting
the 2014 Craft Show. For 32 years our juried show has presented unique, beautiful and innovative American craft art. This
year, in a quest for the best, we have assembled 123 outstanding contemporary artists chosen from over 1,100 applicants.
In addition, we have initiated a Visionary Award to be presented to artists who have reached the pinnacle in the world
of sculptural arts and design. Our 2014 esteemed honorees are wood and furniture designer Wendell Castle and metal
designer Albert Paley, both recognized as giants in their fields. We are fortunate that their seminal works, Wendell Castle’s
Ghost Clock and Albert Paley’s Portal Gates, are housed in the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery.
The Craft Show is more than an opportunity to meet talented artists and purchase one-of-a-kind design. It is also an
opportunity to support the Smithsonian, its nineteen museums, research facilities and the National Zoo. For the past
48 years the Smithsonian Women’s Committee has played an important philanthropic role by raising more than 10 million
dollars to fund education, research and discovery grants. Please take a moment to read about some of the exciting and
intriguing grants we have funded.
We extend our appreciation to all of the members of the Smithsonian
Women’s Committee for their tireless volunteer efforts in producing
this year’s Craft Show. We also wish to thank our exhibitors for their
donations to our raffle and on-line auction. And, of course, we give
special thanks to our corporate, foundation and individual sponsors
for their generous contributions.
Again, welcome! Enjoy the show!

VISIONARY AWARD
OUR CHAIRSRECIPIENTS OF THE 2014 VISIONARY AWARDS
WENDELL CASTLE
Lauded as the father of the art furniture movement,
celebrated American artist Wendell Castle has been a
sculptor, designer and educator for over five decades.
From the outset of his career, Castle has pushed furniture
further into the realm of art than any designer has before.
To view his work is to witness an erasure of the lines
between art, craft and design. He is renowned for his
superb craftsmanship, whimsically organic forms and
original techniques for stack-laminating wood.
Mr. Castle’s work can be found in the permanent
collections of over 50 museums worldwide including the
Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum
of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He
has received numerous awards, grants and honors for his
accomplishments.
Wendell Castle is currently on staff at the Rochester
Institute of Technology as Artist-in-Residence.
ALBERT PALEY
Albert Paley is the first metal sculptor to receive the coveted
Institute Honors awarded by the American Institute of
Architects. The allure of Paley’s art comes through its
intrinsic sense of integration of art and architecture.
Mr. Paley began his career as a jewelry artist when, in 1974,
he won a commission to fabricate Portal Gates for the
Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery. It changed his life. He has
since completed more than 50 site-specific monumental
works. Recent works include three sculptures for National
Harbor outside DC, a long archway for the St. Louis Zoo,
and a gate for the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. He was
the featured artist for the summer 2013 exhibition on
Park Avenue for which he produced 13 monumental steel
sculptures.
Albert Paley’s work can be found in the permanent
collections of many major museums. He holds an
endowed chair at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
The Visionary Award, initiated in 2014 by the Smithsonian Women’s Committee, is presented to artists who have risen to
the pinnacle in the world of sculptural arts and design, who have work in major museums and who have demonstrated
distinction, creativity and, of course, vision in their respective medium. Wendell Castle and Albert Paley are the first
recipients of this award.

“Workt by Hand”: Hidden Labor and Historical Quilts is organized by the Brooklyn Museum.
Its presentation at the National Museum of Women in the Arts is made possible through the generous support of the Arkansas State Committee of NMWA and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional funding is provided by the Coby Foundation, the Elizabeth A. Sackler Museum Educational Trust and the members of NMWA.

2014 CRAFT SHOW JURORS
The Smithsonian Women’s Committee is dedicated to presenting to the public the finest of American crafts in an
environment of proven quality and unwavering support for the artist’s vision, creativity and work ethic.
You are asked to give your full attention to the goal of selecting the most accomplished artisans in our applicant pool.
You should not be dismissive if an artist’s style of work has remained relatively unchanged for some years if this style is
the unique design statement originating and identified with the artist, and if the work still seems exciting and innovative.
We encourage you to choose new and innovative work if it reflects excellence, is well-conceived and expertly executed
without technical faults. It should be indicative of the unique design, skill and vision of the best American crafts.
We have confidence in your ability to recognize and choose the finest work available in the 2014 applicant pool.
