1.1.0 Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in for ACSLS – At a GlanceQuest NetVault Backup Plug-in for ACSLS (Plug-in for ACSLS) provides a device integration solution, allowing you to add and use library resources controlled by Oracle StorageTek's Automated Cartridge System Library Software (ACSLS) in a Quest NetVault Backup (NetVault Backup or NVBU) Domain. Functioning as an ACSLS Client, the Plug-in for ACSLS communicates with the ACSLS Server through the Client System Component (CSC) software to access the library resources for backups and restores of NVBU Clients.

The Plug-in for ACSLS is only designed to facilitate configuration of an ACSLS Library in an NVBU Domain. Once configured, the library can be used for backups and restores in the same manner as any other added device. There are no specific requirements to use this library for NVBU operations. Backup and restore operations are controlled by the NVBU Plug-ins. For details on these operations, refer to the applicable plug-in guide.

1.2.0 Target AudienceThis guide is intended for Administrators and other technical personnel who are responsible for adding and managing backup devices in an NVBU Domain. Familiarity with the deployment of an ACSLS tape library in the existing enterprise platform is assumed.

ACSLS Server – The ACSLS Server consists of the library management software and the ACSLS database. The ACSLS Server manages the physical aspects of tape cartridge storage and retrieval. It receives the robotic requests from NVBU and uses the Library Management Unit (LMU) to find, and mount or unmount the correct cartridge on media management requests. The ACSLS Server is connected to the Automated Control System (ACS) through a SCSI, Fibre Channel, or Ethernet connection.ACSLS Client – The ACSLS Client can be an NVBU Server or a SmartClient which is connected to the ACSLS Server and the ACS. It is called the ACSLS Manager and consists of the following components:

NVBU Server or Client SoftwarePlug-in for ACSLSClient System Component – The CSC software acts as an interface between NVBU and ACSLS.

The ACSLS Manager sends media requests to the ACSLS Server through the Control Path. The ACSLS Server reads these requests and provides access to the required resource. The ACSLS Manager then reads and writes data on tape cartridges by interacting directly with tape drives through the data path.Automated Control System (ACS) – An ACS consists of the following components:

Library Management Unit – LMU is the software component of the ACS, which manages Library Storage Modules (LSM), allocates their resources and communicates with the ACSLS.Library Storage Module – The hardware component containing the media, drives, and the robotic arm.

2.2.0 Deployment OverviewNVBU can be configured to control a single ACSLS System or multiple ACSLS Systems. These deployments allow you to control multiple libraries, and manage media and job requests from a single point of control. Following are some example deployments of NVBU in an ACSLS environment.

Check Command Completion Interval – This parameter controls the amount of time NVBU waits for the completion of an ACSLS command. If the execution does not complete within the given time, NVBU tries to find the drive status. If the drive is online, NVBU waits for command completion for a second time. However, if no result is obtained within the specified interval, the job is reported as failed. The default value for this

Page 23: Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in · 2014-11-20 · Oracle StorageTek's ACSLS centralizes management of tape libraries in a heterogeneous environment, allowing you to share the library

Quest NetVault Backup Plug-infor FileSystem User’s Guide

23

parameter is 90 seconds. Retain 0 (zero), if you do not want to change the default setting for this parameter.Check Online Interval – Enter or select the interval between two drive status checks. The status check interval is specified in number of seconds.Return Inactive Media to Slot Delay – Enter or select the timeout value for media inactivity. The media is returned back to the slot if no activity occurs within the specified interval. The default value for this parameter is zero, which implies that the media is retained in the drive indefinitely.Mark Unknown Media Blank – When NVBU is not able to read a tape's header, it marks that media item as Unknown. Select the Mark Unknown Media Blank check box to mark such media as Blank instead of Unknown. You must still run the Blank command to actually delete the data and use the media for backups.Do Not Scan Unknown Media – When you add tapes to a library, and close the door (or restart the library), NVBU takes an inventory by reading the media barcodes. If NVBU cannot find the barcode for a piece of media in the Media Database, then it marks that tape as UNKNOWN. You can use the Mark Unknown Media Blank parameter to mark such media items as BLANK.If you do not mark the unknown tapes as BLANK, then NVBU starts loading each unknown tape into one of the drives to scan for backups and on-tape indices. On very large systems, this can increase the burden on the drive resources. To leave the unknown tapes as UNKNOWN and not scan them automatically, select the Do Not Scan Unknown Media check box. This option only applies to the selected library. To apply this parameter to an existing library, you must remove the library and re-add it.You can also select this as a default setting for all new libraries from the NVBU Configurator. For details, refer to the Quest NetVault Backup Configuration Guide.Check if Offline Media is Available – Enter or select the amount of time NVBU will wait for an offline media to become online. The request will time out if the media does not become available within the specified period. The timeout for the availability of offline media is specified in minutes. The default value for this parameter is 10 minutes.Unload Unexpectedly Full Drives – Select this check box to return a media to its appropriate slot when the Plug-in for ACSLS finds a media that is full and not marked for reuse.

Page 24: Quest NetVault Backup Plug-in · 2014-11-20 · Oracle StorageTek's ACSLS centralizes management of tape libraries in a heterogeneous environment, allowing you to share the library

Chapter 4Configuring Plug-in for ACSLS

24

Backing Off Drive Interval – This parameter determines the amount of time NVBU waits after aborting the process when the ACSLS Library returns a DRIVE_IN_USE response to a mount request. The default value for this parameter is 300 seconds. Retain 0 (zero) if you do not want to change the default setting.ACSLS User Id – Starting with version 5.0 of the Plug-in for ACSLS, the ACSLS Manager can make use of the ACSLS Access ID in communication with the ACSLS Server. This allows two ACSLS libraries to be controlled when they are running on the machine with the same IP address (as opposed to different machines with different IP addresses). The more common configuration is to use separate IP addresses. However, when one ACSLS server supports two logical libraries on a single IP address, it is necessary to set the ACSLS Access ID to differentiate between the two logical libraries. To add two ACSLS libraries to the same NVBU Server that connect to a logical ACSLS library on the same IP address, configure a separate ACSLS User ID (Access ID) for each library. The User ID can contain a maximum of 64 characters. It is stored in the ACS library configuration file. The User ID is associated with the NVACSLSMGR process that runs for a library, and added to the ACS message header of each request to the ACSLS Server. When this option is not configured, the ACS message header remains empty.

4.1.5 Saving Library DetailsTo complete the library addition procedure, perform the following steps:

1. NVBU assigns a default name to the device for its identification. You can save the library with its default name or assign a user-defined name. To assign a new name, enter the string in Library Name.

2. To save the library details, click Save Details on the toolbar. The library will be added and listed on the Devices tab of the NVBU Device Management window. The drives will remain offline and unavailable until you map them.

4.1.6 Mapping Individual DrivesAfter adding library, it is necessary to map the individual drives. The drives will remain offline and unavailable until you map them. Mapping a drive involves configuring the ACS, LSM, Panel, and Drive number for each drive. These four parameters are essential to access a drive in an ACSLS system.

To obtain the ACS, LSM, Panel, and Drive details, use the following steps:

1. Log on to the ACSLS system as acssa user.2. Type the following command:

query drive all

To map the individual drives, perform the following steps:

1. On the Device Management window, right-click an ACSLS drive, and select Map.

2. In the Map Device window, configure the following parameters:

ACS – This parameter specifies the ACS number of the library that contains the drive. It is a read-only parameter.LSM – Enter or select the LSM Number of the robotic unit that controls the drive. By default, this parameter is set to zero. You can retain the default value if only a single library resides in your ACSLS system.Panel – Enter or select the identification number of the panel where the drive is located. By default, this parameter is set to zero. You can retain the default value if only a single library resides in your ACSLS System.Drive – Enter or select the physical number of the drive.Name – Select the Name check box and specify a name for the drive for its identification.Drive Type – Enter or select what type of media will be loaded on to the drive.

3. Click OK.4. Repeat steps 1 – 3 for each drive. When all drives are mapped, the drive

status will change to online.5. To share the drives with multiple NVBU Clients, modify the library, and add

the drives as shared. For details on sharing drives, refer to the Quest NetVault Backup Administrator’s Guide.

4.1.7 Allocating MediaThe final step involves allocating media to the added library. When allocating media to an ACSLS Library, you can specify a single volume, a range of volumes, or a specific number of volumes. The volumes are identified using barcodes. Before proceeding, note the following:

The allocated media will be selected for exclusive NVBU use. Be sure to allocate only media intended for NVBU.This procedure cannot be used for allocating Cleaning Media.NVBU cannot identify a new media item until you complete the media allocation procedure.

To allocate media to an ACSLS Library, perform the following steps:

1. On the Device Management window, right-click the ACSLS Device and select Allocate Media.

2. In the Allocate Media window, specify the volume using one of the following methods:

Figure 4-7:Allocate Media

window

Allocating a Single Volume – Click Single, and enter the barcode of applicable volume in the First Volume.Allocating a Range of Volumes – To allocate a range of volumes, click Last Volume, and configure the following parameters:

First Volume – Enter the barcode of the first volume in the range.Last Volume – Enter the barcode of the last volume in the range.

Allocating a Specific Number of Volumes – To allocate a specific number of volumes, click Count, and configure the following parameters:

First Volume – Enter the barcode of the first volume in the range.Number of Volumes – Enter the number of volumes that you want to allocate.

Important: While allocating a media range using the Last Volume or Count options, NVBU will not notify you if any piece of media in the specified range is not available. The only indication is shown on the NVBU Device Management window, where such media items appear grayed-out. When using the Count option, NVBU does not account for the unavailable media pieces. For example, with the Count option, if 3 pieces out of 25 are not available, NVBU will not try to locate any additional media items to account for the 3 unavailable pieces.

3. Click OK to allocate the media.

4.2.0 Sending Eject Media RequestsAn eject media request can either be sent from the NVBU Device Management window or the CLI. For details on sending an eject media request from the CLI, refer to the Quest NetVault Backup Command Line Interface Reference Guide. To use this function from the NVBU Console, perform the following steps:

Note: NVBU does not allow you to import or export ACSLS media. Importing and exporting is considered an ACSLS administrative function, and therefore, must be performed from ACSLS.

1. On the NVBU Device Management window, right-click the ACSLS Device, and select Eject Media.

2. In the Eject Media window, configure the following parameters:Figure 4-8:Eject Media

window

Volume(s) to be Ejected – When ejecting media from an ACSLS Library, you can specify a single volume, a range of volumes, or a specific number of volumes:

Ejecting a Single Volume – Click Single, enter the barcode of the applicable volume in First Volume.Ejecting a Range of Volumes – To eject a range of volumes, click Last Volume, and configure the following parameters:

3. Click OK. The Plug-in for ACSLS sends a message to ACSSA to remove cartridges from the CAP, and changes the device status on the NVBU Console to Ejecting Media. After removing the cartridges manually when the CAP door is closed for the final time, a message is sent to the plug-in. This message is recorded in the NVBU Logs and provides the overall status of the eject request and the status of the individual pieces of media.

Note: This procedure will not eject media items that are in a drive. For such media, a warning message stating 91 ‘Volume in Drive’ will be recorded in the Device Logs.
